MANLY REFS RIDE THE RAPIIDS

The 2001 training squad  donned life jackets and helmets before hitting the rafts Sunday (November 18 2001), to ride the rapids of the Whitewater rafting complex at Penrith. A full complement of 15 turned out for the day which was a great success. The squad broke into two crews. First off the rank was the Rowdy-led Lemons which were on the water for not much more than a minute before coming to grief. Easily the spill of the day, the whole crew was up-ended, including the instructor. Rowdy, leading by example, was the first to tumble out before being joined by his crew (Dane, Shanes Charman and Armstrong, Ken, John Mac and Finchie). The experience the Lemons gained in their first run was used to full advantage in their second when they almost mirrored the spill again, although two members managed to stay aboard.
The Pinks, led by Danielle,  had their share of spills but were supported by the presence of Phil Brown in the centre of the raft which tended to stabilise the Pinks' craft. Brownie, who now calls himself 'Slim', was surrounded by Danielle, DJ (who did an excellent job organising the day), Peardy, Hoges, Blause, Greg and Rob. A sumptuous BBQ followed the regatta with drinks provided by Shano, Hoges and Rowdy. It was then up to Slim to organise the trip home for everybody, including a lift for himself to Narrabeen

NORTHERN EAGLES TALKS BREAK DOWN

Manly has rebuffed the Singleton/North Sydney partnership proposal and will go forward on their own. The main stumbling block has been Singleton's insistence that all games be played at NorthPower Stadium. Singleton has acquired the rights to NorthPower although the deal has still to be finalised. Under Manly the Northern Eagles will play 6 games at NorthPower and 6 games at Brookvale.

MANLY AND NORTHS ARE LIKELY TO MERGE AGAIN TO PARTNER JOHN SINGLETON IN A NEW TAKEOVER OF THE NORTHERN EAGLES

John Singleton now looks certain to take control of the Northern Eagles with Manly and North Sydney as  partners. In behind the scenes moves it is believed Singo has now acquired the rights to NorthPower Stadium from North Sydney. Yesterday (October 29 2001) Manly and North Sydney buried the hatchet with an out-of-court settlement which clears the way for the new  venture. Whilst nothing is confirmed it is likely Singleton will end up with 60% in the joint venture with Manly and North Sydney each holding 20%.

SOS OUT FOR REFEREES FOR EAGLETAG GALA DAY
The annual Eagletag Gala Day is on Thursday November 15 2001 and referees are required from 8.45am until the afternoon. Anyone able to take part should contact David Naughton on 9999 3813 or 0411 063283. For the unitiated Eagletag is a training game for League, the rules being similar to Mod football. A tag is worn on each hip. Instead of tackling you try to remove the tag. A number of members officiated at last years Gala Day. Keith Anderson, Denis Boyd Skinner, Luke Eisenhauer and David Naughton have been running in the primary schools competition on Friday afternoons.

MANLY REFS GO INTO HIBERNATION

October 2001 is likely to pass by with no significant events to report. It will be a No News month. No games, no meetings, no news. For Manly Refs it is also no money as Manly struggles to prioritise its planning and commitments for next year. Back room talks have been underway in past weeks to resolve the Northern Eagles dilemma and secure the team's future. One thing starting to emerge is that Manly may not be in the driving seat for much longer.

GLEN O'BRIEN CELEBRATES HIS ENGAGEMENT TO GIRLFRIEND ROWENA

Manly Refs Secretary Glen O'Brien has announced his engagement to girlfriend Rowena. Family and friends gathered on the weekend (September 29 2001) to mark the occasion with celebratory drinks and refreshments. The pair have yet to set a date for the big day. All members of the Association extend their best wishes and congratulations to Glen and Rowena.

CANTERBURY BULLDOGS WIN THE 2001 FLEGG GRAND FINAL WITH STEVE LYONS AT THE HELM

The Bulldogs notched up a 12-10 Jersey Flegg grand final victory over the Sharks at Stadium Australia Sunday night (September 30 2001). The game was refereed by Manly Ref Steve Lyons. The Bulldogs, who were minor premiers,  scored two soft tries but the final result came down to the Sharks' goal kicking, with stand-out five-eighth Jye Mullane missing two attempts in front.
The Bulldogs, coached by Ricky Stuart,  opened the scoring in the 9th minute when Sharks centre Ryan McGoldrick dropped the ball in-goal and Bulldogs five-eighth Jonathon Thurston dived on it to score.  Thurston converted for a 6-0 lead. The Sharks responded 5 minutes before halftime when winger Adam Davidson crossed to level the scores. The Bulldogs were first to score in the second half when a kick from replacement Brett Olive ricocheted off three Sharks players and bounced in-goal for winger Matt Riddle to grab a try and the lead. Steve Lyons had to consult his in-goal touch-judge before awarding the try as Cronulla replacement James Collins appeared to ground the ball first. Unfortunately there was no Video Ref to call on, which is a matter likely to be reviewed for next year. Thurston added his second goal to extend the lead. The Sharks meantime got their chance  scoring a stunning try in the 67th minute when Mullane threw a pass over Riddle's head to winger Shad Royston to touch down and take the score to 12-10. The pressure was on Mullane but he missed the goal and the Bulldogs held on for victory.

MANLY REFS' STEVE LYONS (TEDDY) LANDS THE 2001 FLEGG GRAND FINAL

Steve Lyons has been appointed to referee the 2001 Flegg Grand Final at Homebush Stadium Sunday September 30. The match between the Canterbury Bulldogs and the Cronulla Sharks at 5.30pm will be the curtain raiser to the NRL First Grade Grand Final between Parramatta and Newcastle at 8pm. Sydney Roosters fans will be particularly interested in the performance of the Canterbury Bulldogs side as their coach, Ricky Stuart will take charge of the Roosters first grade side next year. Steve Gough coaches the Cronulla Sharks, a number of which will be the focus for Australian coach Chris Anderson who coaches the Cronulla first grade side in 2002. In the first grade refereeing appointments Bill Harrigan will be in charge with Steve Richards and Shayne Hayne on the lines with Mick Stone and Chris Ward the Video Refs. Assisting Teddy on his lines will be Scott Portsmouth and Tom Peet, while Rod Lawrence will handle the First Division Grand Final earlier in the day at 3.25pm between the St. George Dragons and the Parramatta Eels with support from Colin Jones and Martin Ryan. Congratulations Teddy and good luck Sunday!

VALLEY UNITED GO DOWN IN THE A GRADE AND A RESERVE GRADE GRAND FINALS

In an action packed day Sunday (August 26 2001) at Brookvale Oval the 2001 season drew to an end with Grand Finals being decided from Under 15s through to A Grade. Valleys, who have contested 18 of the last 30 A Grade Grand Finals led early in the A Grade with a converted try. Cromer put three tries on the board, and with two conversions led 16-6 just prior to the break when Valleys put on a try to trail 16-10. Both sides scored a try each in the second half with Cromer taking out the match 20-14. David Jay had charge of the center with Phil Brown and John McEvoy on the lines. The A Reserve Grade, handled by Darryn Lang with support from Greg Kidd and Rocky Davis, was the only match on the day that didn’t feature the minor premiers. Asquith, who finished on top of the competition, were ousted by Valleys last week. Valleys struggled against Forestville, particularly in the first half when the Ferrets led 24-4. Valleys scored all the points in the second half, but by that stage the Ferrets had flown. Forestville finished in front  24-14 to win their first ever A Reserve Grade premiership. The Under 19s saw one of the most exciting finishes of the day. With the score at 20 to 8 with 14 minutes to go North Ryde led North Sydney Brothers. At that point Brothers scored a try and converted to trail 20-14. With 11 minutes to go Brothers scored again and converted to bring the score to 20-all. Brothers, who had had two players outed by the Judiciary through the week, at this stage had scored 4 tries to North Ryde’s 3. Then in the final seconds the North Sydney Brothers kicked a field goal to win the game 21-20. Dave Lombardo was in the box seat with Jayson Elkins and Shane Spittles riding shotgun. The Under 17s was an all Balmain affair with Holy Cross nailing Leichardt 44-4. Directing the one way traffic was Shane Charman with back-up from Ken Hagarty and Ralph Mills. The Under 16s, with Nathan Hogan in charge and the flanks manned by Dale Martinuzzo and Saxon Williams, was another nail biter with Hornsby and Harbord leveling at 22-22 with 30 seconds to go. At that point Harbord broke through for a try to win 26-20. The try was scored by Tim Rigby, son of Manly A Grade ref Ian Rigby. The Under 15s, the first Grand Final of the day saw minor premiers Asquith meet North Curl Curl, who overcame Manly Cove and St.Augustines to qualify from fourth place. The game, refereed by Matt Noyen with Rowdy Mercer, Dave Naughton and Luke Eisenhauer on the lines, was won by Asquith. Meantime in neighbouring  North Sydney, West Ryde easily defeated Willoughby in the A Grade Grand Final at North Sydney Oval on Sunday night. The Balmain side led 22-0 at half-time. The Willoughby side was coached by Dwayne Pearson who played in Beacon Hill's A Grade premiership winning side last year.

ROB PEARD MAKES THE CALL OF THE DAY
With a raging thunder and lightning storm set to overwhelm Brookvale Oval just prior to the commencement of the A Grade Grand Final Sunday (August 26 2001), Rob Peard, Manly’s Director of Referees, stepped in to suspend the start of the game. The Oval’s main lights also went down as rain plunged onto the field drenching A Reserve Grade players, referees and officials. Rob Peard declared that the A Grade Grand Final could not go on until conditions were safe and proper lighting had been restored. The main concern with safety was the lightning. After about 20 minutes the storm cleared, the lights were restored and the game went on, in perfect conditions for football.

DAVID NAUGHTON IS INJURED IN ACTION
For the first time in many years Dave Naughton succumbed to injury during a game Sunday (August 26, 2001). Officiating in the first Grand Final of the day, the Under 15s at Brookvale Oval, Dave pulled a hamstring three minutes from half time.  He was replaced by standby touch judge Luke Eisenhauer. David retired to the announcing box to take up his duties as Ground Announcer, with an ice-pack in tow

LUKE EISENHAUER: A MAN OF MANY PARTS

Aside from being trainer for almost all Grand Finals on Sunday(August 26 2001) at Brookvale Oval, Luke Eisenhauer (“Blause”) was also in the programme as Ball Boy for the Reserve Grade between the Ferrets (of course) and Valleys. Luke explained he was on a bit of a nostalgia trip as he was ball boy the last time the Ferrets contested a Grand Final. To top the day off Luke stepped in to fill Dave Naughton’s shoes after Dave went down with a hamstring injury in the first half of the Under 15s Grand Final.

TEDDY BACK IN ACTION AT DAIRY FARMERS

Manly and NRL Ref Steve Lyons (Teddy) flew to Townsville Saturday (August 25 2001) to take charge of the first grade clash between the Newcastle Knights and the North Queensland Cowboys. Test halfback Andrew Johns fought off a rib injury to steer Newcastle to a 34-18 win. Johns made a dream NRL return when he scored and converted in the first 90 seconds.Teddy had to call the game up in the 13th minute when Knights backrower Julian Bailey broke his left arm in two places.
Two minutes later the Knights scored again and Johns converted from near touch.  The Cowboys at that point hit back, scoring twice inside the final 10 minutes of the first half to make it 12-12 at the break. The hosts' pressure in the first six minutes of the second half led to Teddy calling on the video referee before disallowing a George Gatis try. From thereon the Knights shot away to win comfortably.

PHIL BROWN INVOLVED IN MISSING FUNDS

Phil Brown who refereed the Under 7s Grand Final on Saturday (August 25 2001) was confronted by a player who found a fiver (a five dollar note) during the game. Asking the referee what he should do with it, Brownie accommodated by saying he would look after it for him. The player’s side won the Grand Final and Brownie thought that would be the end of it. Alas a few minutes later a small hand was tugging at his shorts with his other hand extended and heard to be saying “where’s my five dollars?”

FINAL WHISTLE BLOWS AS FIFTEEN JUNIOR GRAND FINALS ARE WON AND LOST

From 8.30 this morning (Saturday August 25 2001) when the first whistle was blown by Addie Flippance to commence the Under 7s (2) Grand Final at Beacon Hill Oval,  to 4.30 this afternoon when Rowdy Mercer blew the whistle to end the Under 14s Grand Final at Lionel Watts Park,  Manly referees and touch judges officiated at fifteen Grand Finals on three separate grounds. At Lionel Watts the Rowdy controlled Under 14s was won by Narraweena over St. Augustines. The Under 13s (1), refereed by Luke Eisenhauer, saw Narraweena defeat Manly Cove. Assisting on the lines of both the 14s and the 13s (1) were Graham Hart and Fred Markezic. The Under 13s (2) with Anthony Balkin (Balko) at the helm,  resulted in a win for Beacon Hill over Harbord. The Under 12s (1) was handled by Dane Pymble and saw a win to Pennant Hills over Christian Brothers. Ryan Alexander and Shane Armstrong manned the flanks of the 13s (2) and the 12s (1). The Under 12s (2), refereed by Ryan Alexander with support from Dane Pymble and Shane Armstrong, saw a win to Narrabeen over Harbord. At Beverly Job Park Danielle Berry had the match of the Day, the Under 11s (1) between Harbord, the winner,  and Belrose. Stuart Haven and Steve McDonald were on the lines. The Under 11s (2) was handled by Steve McDonald with Stuart Haven and Carl Pymble. The game  resulted in a win to Manly Cove over Narrabeen. Stuart Haven was in charge of the Under 10s (1) and touch judges were Robert Sydneham and Danielle Berry. The game, between Manly Cove and North Curl Curl was won by Manly Cove. Carl Pymble refereed the Under 10s (2) between the winner Belrose, and Narrabeen. Robert Sydenham and Matt Finch were on the lines. Kicking off the day at Beverly Job was Matt Finch, with touch judges Robert Sydenham and Carl Pymble, for the Under 9s (1) Grand Final between Narrabeen and Harbord. The game was won by Narrabeen. At Beacon Hill Oval Chris Bateman had charge of the Under 9s (2) which was the match of the day at that ground. The game, between Harbord and Mona Vale resulted in a victory to Mona Vale. Clinton Rowley and Dennis Boyd-Skinner had charge of the lines. The Under 8s (1) was won by Narraweena over Belrose. In the centre was Dennis Boyd-Skinner and in support were Clinton Rowley and Chris Bateman. The Under 8s (2), refereed by Coaching Director Ken Hagarty, saw a win to Harbord over Avalon. The Under 7s (1) with Phil Brown in the middle resulted in a win to Manly Cove over Mona Vale,  and in the Under 7s(2) Addie Flippance oversaw a win to Harbord against Narrabeen. Bevan Bourke and Rhianna Hesp worked overtime to man the lines for the Under 8s (2), the Under 7s (1) and the Under 7s (2).

WALSHY TO BE ON TV THIS SUNDAY
The Nutri-Grain Cup quarter final which was refereed by Manly and NSW Rep referee, Jason Walsh on August 17 2001 at Marathon Stadium, will be aired on Channel 9 this Sunday (August 26 2001) at 12 noon. The game between Terra Sancta and St.Dominics was a good one with the score level at 18-all with 5 minutes to go. This Saturday Walshy has charge of the Penrith Vs Western Suburbs Flegg at 4.15pm at Penrith Football Stadium. Nathan Hogan is also back in action this weekend. He is on the line for the North Sydney Vs. Balmain Flegg at NorthPower Stadium. Jenny Robinson will be the referee for that game.

HIGH DRAMA AT BROOKVALE OVAL AS FINALS GAMES END IN FURY

Major incidents followed the Under 19s and A Grade games Sunday (August 19 2001). As the Under 19s siren sounded to end the game an alleged incident in a tackle on a North Sydney Brothers side by Christian Brothers sparked an all-in brawl. The fighting lasted about two minutes with reserves coming from the bench to join in. Following the incident referee David Lombardo sent 5 players off, three from Christian Brothers and two from Brothers. Two of the dismissed players were reserves not taking part in the game. Four of the players were sent off on touch judge reports. Following the game Judiciary Chairman Geoff McGuinness said the Judiciary would be viewing the video and more players could be cited. In another incident  referee David Jay was treated to a hostile demonstration from the crowd, some players and officials,  as he left the field after refereeing the A Grade final,  with one spectator spitting at him. He was escorted from the field by Bevan
Bourke.

CROMER WIN THEIR WAY TO THE A GRADE GRAND FINAL

Cromer, after an early struggle, edged their way to a 17-16 lead against Hornsby Sunday (August 19 2001), before putting on a couple of late tries to win comfortably 27-16. Cromer will now take on Valleys in the Grand Final at 3.15pm next Sunday (August 26 2001)  with David Jay backing up for his second A Grade Grand Final. Valleys will also be appearing in the A Reserve Grade Grand Final after defeating Asquith Sunday. Darryn Lang had to work overtime to get a result after the two sides were levelled 20-all at full time. Valleys, who were down 8 players due to the new qualification rules (4 players) and injury (4 players) overcame the odds to win 30-20. Ironically the four players who had played in the preliminary final and were ruled ineligible for Sunday's game, will now be eligible to play in the Grand Final. Darryn Lang will take charge of his first Reserve Grade Grand Final when Valleys meet Forestville at 1.45pm. The Under 19s was a nail-biter in the early stages with the score going 4-0, 4-4, 10-4 and 10-10, however North Sydney Brothers scored two tries in the final 3 minutes of the first half to lead 22-10 at the break. In the second half they careered away to win 40-28 and will now meet North Ryde in the Under 19s Grand Final Sunday at 12.15pm to be refereed by David Lombardo. The Under 17s was a close encounter in the early stages with Narrabeen leading Leichardt Wanderers 8-6 at the break. In the second half  however the Wanderers strode away to win 22-10. The Under 17s Grand Final, to be refereed by Shane Charman at 11am, will be between the Leichardt Wanderers and Holy Cross. The Under 16s Final, handled by Nathan Hogan was another close affair with the Leichardt Wanderers pressuring Harbord in the final minutes before succumbing to a 30-26 loss. The Under 16s with Nathan Hogan backing up will see Harbord meet  Hornsby at 9.45am. The Under 15s, with Matt Noyen in the centre, again was close with North Curl Curl just edging out St. Augustines 26-20. Matt Noyen will be handling the Under 15s Grand Final at 8.30am to be between Asquith and North Curl Curl. All Grand Finals on Sunday (August 26 2001) will be at Brookvale oval.

GRAND FINAL APPOINTMENTS WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEB SITE AT 4PM TODAY (MONDAY AUGUST 20 2001)

TRAINING ENDS TONIGHT WITH THE OLYMPIC EVENTS AND A BBQ

ASQUITH WIN THE UNDER 14S IN THE MATCH OF THE DAY AS JUNIOR GRAND FINAL TEAMS ARE FINALISED

Carl Pymble kicked off proceedings at Brookvale Oval Saturday (August 18 2001) with the Under 10s final, while Addie Flippance and Philip Brown initiated Under 7s finals at Hitchcock Park and Nolans 13 respectively, to launch a series of play-offs across the district to determine the particpants in the junior Grand Finals next Saturday. In the match of the day at Nolans 13 Asquith narrowly won from Curl Curl in an exciting match, exceptionally  refereed by Rowdy Mercer. Two points separated the sides for most of the game with two Asquith tries disallowed on calls from touch judge Fred Markezic. With Asquith leading 8-6 at the break and with both sides scoring a try each in the second half (both of which were converted) Asquith won the game 14-12.  Reports in from advisory board members Frank Samyia at Brookvale Oval, Dave Naughton at Hitchcock Park and Rob Peard at Nolans 13 indicate referees and touch judges acquitted themselves well right across the board. The Under 11s at Nolans 13 between Belrose and Cromer, with Danielle Berry at the helm, had to go into extra time to determine a result, with Belrose eventually being declared the winner.

JASON WALSH CENTRES THE  NUTRI-GRAIN CUP QUARTER FINAL

Manly and NSW Rep referee Jason Walsh took charge of the Nutri-Grain Cup quarter final on Friday night (August 17 2001) at Marathon Stadium. The game, between Terra Sancta and St. Dominics was 18-all with five minutes to go when St.Dominics drew away,  scoring twice in the final minutes,  to win 28-18. The game will be televised at a later date.

BEACON HILL BOW OUT OF A GRADE AND RESERVE GRADE
Last year's A Grade premiers and Reserve Grade grand finalists, Beacon Hill, succumbed to comprehensive losses on the week-end and are now out of the premiership running. The A Grade, in the fight for minor premiers only 3 weeks ago, were beaten by Hornsby 26-16 after referee David Jay sent a player off just prior to half time on an alleged kicking charge. The Lions, with two key players having returned from injury, are back to the form they showed earlier in the year. In the other A Grade preliminary final Valleys, in defeating Cromer 12-8, have gone straight to the Grand Final. They will play the winner of this Sunday's encounter between Cromer and Hornsby. Valleys Reserve Grade also won, defeating Beacon Hill 28-12 and they will now play Asquith, beaten 24-8 by Forestville last weekend. The winner will meet Forestville in the Grand Final.  Sunday's Finals will be at Brookvale Oval with the first grade to be handled by David Jay (3.00pm)  and the Reserve Grade by Darryn Lang at 1.30pm. The day's events will kick off with the Under 15s to be refereed by Matt Noyen (8.30am), to be followed by the Under 16s to be handled by Nathan Hogan (9.45am), the Under 17s (Shane Charman 11.00am) and the Under 19s to be refereed by David Lombardo at 12.15pm

STEVE LYONS ("TEDDY") IS CONGRATULATED ON BEING APPOINTED TO HIS FIRST NRL FIRST GRADE GAME

ONE OF PERTH'S TOP REFEREES, ST. GEORGE GREAT TED GOODWIN,  SACKED BY THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN RUGBY LEAGUE

Just three weeks after coaching the W.A. Under 15s to a draw with Northern Territory in the Australian Championships at Hammondville Oval, Sydney, Ted Goodwin has been sacked from his position as Development Officer with the Western Australian Rugby League. Goodwin has been one of the top referees in Perth for some years and Friday night (August 3 2001) refereed the North Beach Vs South Perth reserve grade game. The sacking was the result of an incident which occurred following the Australian Championships, the keynote game of which, the first test between the Queensland and New South Wales Under 18s sides was refereed by Manly Refs' Darryn Lang. Following their drawing the Australian championships Goodwin allegedly arranged for the purchase of a carton of beer,  and provided the 17 player squad a can each at the team's camp at Cronulla,  at the end of the night. Word filtered back to the League heavies  and this week Goodwin was called before the board of the WARFL and was sacked on the spot. Goodwin is credited with major inroads into the development of the Code in the West after the game was decimated by the Super League War and the demise of the Western Reds. His high profile, which has lifted the game in schools development, was evidenced by his appearance at the Australian championships. He is widely respected in Western Australia and Clubs in W.A. and parents of the players that toured are up in arms over the sacking. It is unknown whether the sacking will have any bearing on his status as a referee.

BELROSE SWAMP ASQUITH TO TAKE 5TH SPOT IN THE A GRADE
Belrose turned a 6 point lead at half time into a 30 point lead by full time, when they trounced Asquith at Reub Hudson Tuesday night  (July 31 2001). Asquith failed to make an impression at any stage, although a sole try just prior to the break , together with a conversion and a penalty goal, had them trailing by only 14-8. Just after half-time however, referee David Jay sent an Asquith forward off for an alleged dangerous throw, which left the Magpies continuing to struggle for the rest of the game. To cap their woes for the night an ambulance had to be called for another Asquith player who may have broken a leg just 3 minutes from the end of the game. Belrose were by far the better side on the night and the 38-8 final score reflected that. The 'Roses will now meet Hornsby in the minor semi-final at St.Matthews Farm Sunday.

LATE NEWS: ALL WEEKEND GAMES CANCELLED
Mid Saturday (July 28 2001) afternoon the Manly Junior League called off all weekend fixtures. Continuing light rain through Saturday forced the closure of grounds which had remained open for Sundays 'A' and 'A' Reserve grade games. All other games, other than the Sunday 'A' grade fixtures had been cancelled late Friday. It is believed the final five for all grades will be as they were at the completion of last weekend's games. The irony is that virtually since Saturday's decision there has been no rain and through most of Sunday the sun has been shining.

SUNDAY'S 'A' GRADE  AND 'A' RESERVE GAMES TO GO AHEAD, ALL OTHER GAMES CANCELLED

All Saturday (July 28 2001) games, including the 'A' and 'A' Reserve Grade games set down for Nolans 1 have been cancelled. The 'A' Grade and 'A' Reserve Grade games set down for Sunday (July 29 2001) will proceed, however all other Sunday games have been cancelled. The changes, which came late on Friday, followed a week's  rain which has affected most grounds in the district. With the cancellation of Saturday's games it is expected  the grounds will be in good enough condition for the reduced number of Sunday 'A' and 'A' Reserve Grade fixtures, some of which are crucia
l for finalising the final fives.

Congratulations Brownie and may the next
25 years be excitng as the last.

VALLEYS THRASH LAST YEAR'S PREMIERS BEACON HILL 52-12 AT BEACON HILL OVAL

In the upset of the round the home team lost control as Valleys took charge and hammered home their 2001 premiership prospects Sunday (July 22 2001). In a fiery match one player was sent off on a touch judge's report and four were sin-binned. Beacon Hill's lack of discipline was matched by Valley's eagerness to make amends for last week's lacklustre display against Cromer.  Meantime Cromer continued their winning streak with a sumptuous win over Forestville 56-4, Asquith 22 defeated Brothers 6, Avalon 50 trounced Manly Cove 6 and Pennant Hills defeated Narraweena 28-10.
At the end of the Round the Final Five stands as follows:

A Grade (To play next week)          Reserve Grade  (To play next week)
26 Cromer (Hornsby)                     26 Beacon Hill (Manly Cove)
24 Beacon Hill (M. Cove)               24 Asquith (Forestville)
24 Valleys (Pennant Hills)               23 Forestville (Asquith)
20 Hornsby (Cromer)                     22 Valleys (Pennant Hills)
18 Belrose (Avalon)                        20 Hornsby (Cromer)

18 Asquith (Forestville)

PLAY-OFF FOR FIFTH SPOT IN ‘A’ GRADE LIKELY AS BELROSE DOWNS HORSNBY

Belrose steam-rollered Hornsby 38-0 Saturday (July 21 2001) in a lackluster game at Lionel Watts. The local team was in within a minute of the start and by the end had notched up eight tries, three of which were converted. Battling the loss of a player to the sin-bin for back-chatting, Hornsby, who reputedly had six regular players out, had little possession, and of that they had, they squandered. Even a kick-off from half-way, after having a try scored against them, ended up out on the full. David Jay controlled the game, after a switch with Darryn Lang who was called up for rep duties. Phil Brown and David Naughton manned the lines. Odds for a play-off for fifth spot have shortened as a result of Saturday’s game, with Belrose, Asquith and Hornsby now jockying for fourth and fifth spots.

REPORTS THE NORTHERN EAGLES MAY NOT TAKE THE FIE
LD THIS WEEKEND ARE "UNFOUNDED AND UNTRUE"
Rugby League's two week honeymoon, since the South Sydney decision, has collapsed in the midst of a major civil war between Northern Eagles partners Manly and North Sydney. In what John Singleton has described as "an act of treachery" Manly Leagues Club Chairman Ken Arthurson has threatened to wind the JV up and take control of the franchise. North Sydney has threatened legal action, it's Administrator  has warned it may sue Manly for damages and moves are under way for North Sydney, which controls the management rights to NorthPower Stadium,  to apply for the fourth Australian license to play in the Super 12. The NRL Thursday (July 19 2001) reaffirmed it's commitment to a 15 team 2002 premiership and a continuing presence on the Central Coast, whilst players who have been sweating for weeks over the speculation, now have both Manly and John Singleton offering to pay their 2001 player payments. Meantime the NRL has decided to appeal to the High Court over the Federal Court decision to include South Sydney in the competition next year. On top of all this the NRL admits it is just $2.5 million short of insolvency. In the interim the fate of the Northern Eagles/ Central Coast Bears/Brookvale Bears/Manly Sea-Eagles will be decided at a board meeting of the Northern Eagles on Monday night. Late Friday (July 20 2001) the Club had to issue a statement saying reports the team would not take the field this weekend were "unfounded and untrue". The comment of the week however goes to North Sydney Leagues Club boss Jim Henry who said Friday "We'll only walk away when the assassins have put the last bullet in us. So far they've only winged us. Ken's put a gun to our heads but nobody asked Ken if he had any bullets in it. He's gone for his life here, he's called their bluff and they've fallen for it. But maybe this is the biggest gamble Manly's ever taken. Let's just hope that it's not another HIH or OneTel, because no-one seems to have asked to see the colour of Ken's money."

FORMER MANLY PLAYER FIGURES IN CONTROVERSY WITH REFEREES IN MID NORTH QUEENSLAND
Martin Bella, a former first grade and representative player with the District Club, has come under fire after an attack on referees over a crack-down on swearing in Mackay. As part of a mid-season final, in what has been labelled a "sin-bin-a-thon" referees sent players to the sin-bin 23 times during the four finals matches for swearing. Bella, who coaches the incumbent A Grade premiers Sarina, had seven players binned in his match. At half-time in the final Sarina led 20-4 yet lost the game 30-20.  Bella, who insisted he was not opposed to stopping players from swearing, claimed the way the referees and the local league handled the situation was "nothing short of disgraceful". Bella allegedly abused the local Referees Association chairman John Whelan and he and his side boycotted the official presentation ceremony after. Mackay and District Rugby League chairman Greg Sutherland said the referees have the support of the league in their stance to outlaw foul language from any game over which they preside. "Every player who took the field on the weekend was warned by the referees that swearing would not be tolerated", he said. The MDRL is now investigating the situation.

BROTHERS A GRADE GETS SWAMPED AS BEACON HILL SCORES 30 POINTS IN THE FINAL 15 MINUTES
With 15 minutes to go Sunday (July 15 2001) Christian Brothers A grade trailed last year's premiers Beacon Hill 18-14, then in a flurry of tries in the closing minutes the home side put the Brothers away 48 to 14. Rocky Davis had charge with support from Glen O'Brien and Ralph Mills, who is celebrating his 3 months anniversary with his new girl.  In other games Cromer, who trailed Valleys 18-10 at half-time stormed home to win the game 28-18, Belrose defeated Pennant Hills 40-6, Asquith downed Narraweena 66-0, Hornsby beat Manly Cove 70-0 and Avalon defeated Forestville 38-26. In an incredible round the average points scored in the six A Grade games was 59 per game (total 354).

JASON WALSH ENJOYS A FIERY WELCOME BACK TO PARK FOOTBALL
Graded referee Jason Walsh, who the day earlier refereed his usual Saturday Metro Cup game, stepped in for the injured Nathan Hogan Sunday (July 15 2001) handling the Belrose Vs Christian Brothers Under 19s at Lionel Watts. As a result of two blues in the game Jason hoisted three players to the sin-bin.

MANLY REFS ANNOUNCE A 3 YEAR SPONSORSHIP DEAL WITH HARBORD BOWLING CLUB WORTH $9,000

Club President Rob Peard has confirmed a 3 year sponsorship deal with the Harbord Bowling Club. Under the terms of the agreement the Club will be the main sponsor of the Association and will contribute a grant each year of $3,000. The Club will have an option to extend the sponsorship at the end of the 3 years, which will commence with the 2002 season. On Sunday (July 15 2001) the traditional after games drinks commenced at the Harbord Bowling Club where Darryn Lang entertained the locals with renditions of Johnny Horton classics 'North to Alaska' and 'The Battle of New Orleans'. Harbord Bowling Club director Rocky Davis hosted the Manly Refs table.

ROWDY MERCER OVERCOMES BEE STING TO CENTRE THE BELROSE/FORESTVILLE 16S

After being stung on the sole of his foot by a bee late Saturday (July 15 2001) Rowdy was in serious doubt for his game on Sunday at Lionel Watts. Despite considerable pain he rallied to the cause and from all accounts got through in flying colours.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS SHANE CHARMAN

Manly A Grade and NSW Reps referee Shane Charman is celebrating his 22nd birthday (Wednesday July 11 2001). Congratulations Shane!

ASQUITH PRESSURE BELROSE FOR FIFTH SPOT IN THE A GRADE

Asquith stormed home in the second half  to just beat Belrose in a rugged encounter at Storey Park Sunday (July 8 2001). Belrose had led the Magpies 10-6 at half-time but was under pressure by the close of proceedings to be pipped 16-14. The two sides are now equal fifth in the competition. In other games Valleys defeated the Hornsby Lions at Waitara Oval 23-14, Forestville downed Manly Cove 26-20 at Forestville on Saturday night, Cromer defeated Narraweena 30-14 at Beverly Job and Avalon and Christian Brothers drew 12-all at Hitchcock Park.

DARRYN LANG REFEREES THE FIRST TEST IN THE AUSTRALIAN 18S CHAMPIONSHIPS

Manly A Grade and NSW Reps referee Darryn Lang refereed Queensland and NSW Combined High Schools in the Under 18s First Test during the week. The NSW unit won the match 18-12. The game, under lights at Hammondville Oval, Moorebank on Wednesday (July 4 2001) was the highlight of the Australian Secondary Schools Under 15s Championships which saw all states take part in the week long event. The Under 18s Test was the first in a series with the next two to be played in Perth this week. Jayson Elkins, Manly A Reserve Grade and NSW Reps  referee also officiated at the carnival. On hand through the week were Les Matthews, Mick Stone and Bill Harrigan. Wednesday night's game drew a crowd of 3,000, many of which were NRL team scouts. Current NRL players to have graduated from previous Australian Secondary Schools Championships include Braith Anasta, Brad Fittler, Terry Hill, Julian O'Neil and Andrew McFadden.

NATHAN HOGAN INJURED IN NSW REPS GAME
Nathan Hogan, touch-judging the Jersey Flegg game between Manly and the Sydney City Roosters at Henson Park Saturday (July 7 2001), tore an ankle ligament and had to be replaced during the game.  Nathan also had to withdraw from the Cromer Versus Narraweena A Reserve Grade at Beverly Job Sunday (July 8 2001). He was replaced by Glen O'Brien who had refereed on the Saturday night. (Glen was up to the task of doubling up as he had attended the last two training sessions).

THE SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS ARE BACK
In sweeping moves in the last 24 hours South Sydney have appointed Craig Coleman as first grade coach, signed a $1 million a year sponsorship deal with Channel 7's major shareholder Kerry Stokes, confirmed a $1.5 million a year grant from South Sydney Juniors, scheduled their first game next year at the SCG and subsequent home games at the Sydney Football Stadium, launched a membership drive and opened talks with players. South Sydney yesterday took calls from executives of News Corporation and the NRL congratulating them on their Federal Court Appeal victory. On Monday (July  9 2001) the 14 NRL clubs will meet to discuss the composition of next year's premiership. In a far cry from the SCG, it was a 'battle of the rabbits' as the South Sydney Rabittohs beat the Umina Bunnies 40-18 Saturday (July 7 2001), co-incidently, at North Power Stadium in their regional roadshow. The game was watched by 10,598 fans which has prompted South Sydney  to consider playing two NRL matches at North Power next year. Jacin Sinclair, a former McMahons Point junior and an ex Rabbitoh and Wests Tiger, is expected to be Souths first signing for 2002 after he scored 3 tries in Saturday's game.

When it comes to "Never Giving Up"
                We've just raised the bar.

We are proud of what we've done
And proud of who we are.

             Today belongs to the battlers
Who know they're in the right.

             Today belongs to underdogs
Who have to stand and fight.

             Today we showed tradition
                 Is something you can't buy.

Today is a day we'll remember
                 Until the day we die.

We are all a part of this
It's the greatest game we've played.

Today we scored for rugby league
                 And history was made.

The message come through loud and clear
                 Let this saga close

We're back! And we're back to stay!

                 Up the Rabbitohs!!

JOHN SINGLETON BELIEVED TO
BE BEHIND TAKEOVER MOVES FOR THE NORTHERN EAGLES
In an unconfirmed report it is believed John Singleton in recent weeks had offered to take over the Northern Eagles franchise from the embattled partners, North Sydney and Manly. It is believed talks broke down as the plan required all future games to be played at North Power Stadium.

NRL INVITES THE SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS
TO APPLY FOR INCLUSION IN THE 2002 COMPETITION
The National Rugby League has invited South Sydney to submit a business plan and proposal to re-join the NRL first grade competition next year. The move follows the handing down of the Federal Court decision in Melbourne this morning on South Sydney's appeal, which was successful. The NRL finally acknowledged the merit of considering South Sydney's return following years of demands by the rugby league public. In a press release issued late today David Moffett, the NRL Chief Executive said "Souths have shown tremendous spirit and we need to talk to them about whether that can be brought back to the football field. The Club has talked of its plans and its now time for them to to put those business cases to us in a formal way.  There may be aspects of the decision to review further, but these will not affect our current course of action.  Today's judgement is in essence a very technical one, we need to put those technicalities and the difficulties of the past few years behind us and concentrate on the future of the game", Mr. Moffett said.
It has been a day of high emotion for South Sydney supporters who had lost just about every battle but now seem to have won the war. The full bench of the Federal Court ruled in favour of South Sydney which had claimed it had been unfairly excluded from the NRL premiership. The decision, against News Limited, the NRL and the ARL,  was relayed to Sydney by satelite from Melbourne and screened to hundreds of fans outside the Court in Sydney. Thousands of supporters have since descended on the South Sydney Leagues Club, including Alan Jones and Andrew Denton, where celebrations are planned well into the night. Pizza Hut delivery vans have been delivering free pizzas, unprompted by anyone at the Club. It was only last Saturday that Manly played the South Sydney representative teams in the Under 13s through to A Grade, with Manly winning the A Grade (38-10) and the Under 13s and all other games won by South Sydney.

SHANE
CHARMAN AND NATHAN HOGAN APPOINTED TO REP GAME
The two Manly refs will team up to man the lines for the Manly Versus Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg game at Henson Park on Saturday.

The Under 15s at 12.30pm will be handled by Nathan Hogan with support from Danielle Berry and Stuart Haven. The day's representative games will be interrupted at 2pm with the playing of a catch up Under 10s competition game between NCC and Forestville which will be refereed by Danielle Berry. At 3pm the Under 17s will be played with Shane Charman in the centre and Greg Kidd and Dane Pymble on the lines. The A Reserve Grade will be at 4.30pm with Dave Lombardo in charge. Shane Spittles and Luke Eisenhauer will be on the flanks. The day's program will conclude with the A grade at 6pm with David Jay in the centre and Darryn Lang and Jayson Elkins on the lines.

THE A GRADE COMPETITION
IS THROWN WIDE OPEN AS AVALON SPRINGS AN UPSET
Ladder leader Valleys lost to Avalon in a hard fought game at Hitchcock Park Sunday (June 24 2001), the final score being 24-20. In what was described as a great game of football before a large and enthusiastic crowd, the lead changed several times with Valleys leading 18-16 at one stage. David Jay centered with Glen O’Brien and Greg Kidd on the lines. The afternoon’s football was enhanced by the reserve grade curtain raiser which again was tight with Valleys just edging out Avalon in the final seconds with a field goal to win 15-14.
At the end of the round three sides top the A Grade ladder with equa
l points of 20, Beacon Hill, Cromer and Valleys.

A GRADE PLAYER INCURS POSSIBLE SPINAL INJURY
-IS TRANSFERRED TO HOSPITAL BY HELICOPTER

A Hornsby player was transferred by helicopter to the North Shore Hospital Spinal Section on Sunday (June 24 2001), following the side’s clash with Forestville. The player is believed to have walked from the field before collapsing. Medical attendants ultimately determined a helicopter should be  brought in to transfer the player. The helicopter landed in the middle of Waitara Oval before uplifting the player to hospital. The incident dimmed Hornsby A Grade’s celebration of their 40 to 18 win over Forestville. Rocky Davis oversaw proceedings with
support from Nathan Hogan and a North Sydney Touch Judge.

ABUSE OF REFEREES MAR RESERVE GRADE GAMES
In three separate incidents at three separate grounds, Reserve Grade referees were allegedly subjected to incidents of abuse Sunday (June 24 2001). At Nolans 13 Saxon Williams, in charge of the Manly Cove and Belrose Reserve Grade, was allegedly intimidated by a Manly Cove player after he was sent off. A North Sydney Touch Judge, assisting Nathan Hogan in the Horsnby/Forestville game at Waitara Oval was allegedly the target of a kicked football and Jayson Elkins, at Beacon Hill Oval for the Beacon Hill/Narraweena game, dismissed a player for alleged verbal abuse. Players have been charged and will appear at the Judiciary Tuesday night. For Nathan Hogan his send-off was the first of his career.

GARY LARSON HEADS BACK TO RETIREMENT
After a short, but spirited, come-back to rugby league, Gary Larson has again opted for retirement. Larson had teamed up with the Belrose A Grade side because he was missing playing. After a short stint, which rejuvenated the ‘Roses, he apparently decided his thirst for playing was not worth the pressures of training and the ‘Mondays after’ games. Despite Larson’s absence, Belrose enhanced their chances of finishing in the final five by defeating Manly Cove 50 to 22 Sunday (June 24 2001). Shane Charman controlled the game with Saxon Williams and Matt Noyen.

A DEPLETED CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CLAIM ‘10’ AND THEN PRESSURE COMPETITION CONTENDERS CROMER

Christian Brothers claimed 10 minutes from both the Reserve Grade and A Grade games at Nolans 1 Sunday (June 24 2001). The Club fielded only 12 players in the Reserve Grade and replacements for the A Grade all came from the Reserve Grade. Despite their player strength the home side led Cromer (now on equal first) 12-6 at half time. However in the second half Cromer rallied to put on 22 points to Brothers nil, the final score being 28-12. In the centre was David Lombardo with Phil Brown and John McEvoy on the lines.

TIES WITH NORTH SYDNEY REFEREES GROW STRONGER
The traditional after games drink at the Manly Leagues Club on Sunday night (June 17 2001) was boosted by an invasion from North Sydney. The Manly Refs were almost outnumbered with a large number of North Sydney Refs travelling to Manly to swap yarns.  For those that have yet to take part the venue is Manly Leagues Club after Sunday's games, just for an hour or so. It's a good opportunity to enjoy a bit of comraderie and tell lies.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW (June 17 2001)
David Jay and Luke Eisenhauer both celebrated birthdays. For Luke it was a double celebration as he also was awarded his first Sunday appointment, following in the steps of Greg Kidd.  It was also a week where five new members were welcomed into the Association including our now second female member Rheena Hesp. The other new members (mere males) are Frank Cridland, Graham Hart, Shane Armstrong and Fred Markezic. President Rob Peard welcomed the new members, on behalf of all in the Association, at the general meeting Tuesday last.

THE LIGHT ON THE HILL KEPT FLICKERING AND IN THE END IT WENT OUT
It was the 'battle of the hills' on Sunday (June 17 2001) as Pennant Hills flirted with Beacon Hill at Beacon Hill Oval for an exciting game which had Pennant Hills leading 10-nil early in the first half. At half time it was 10-all and with 15 minutes to go it was 14-all. In the end, however the light went out as last years premiers racked up 24 points in the final 15 minutes to defeat Pennant Hills 38-14. It was Shane Charman's second A grade game. Welcome to A grade Shane! On the lines were Glen O'Brien and Rowdy Mercer. In the other match of the round Manly Cove returned to form and led Forestville for all but the final 30 seconds of the game at Nolans 13. At one stage the lead was 16-4. The hard fought game resulted in Forestville snatching the lead in the final half minute to win 24-20. David Jay replaced Darryn Lang in the centre. Darryn was appointed to a Flegg game at Marathon. Ralph Mills and Dave Naughton hit the lines.  In other games Cromer 24 defeated Narraweena 4 at St. Matthews Farm in the Saturday night game, Avalon were too strong for Christian Brothers at 38-20, Valleys 52 defeated Hornsby 52-12 after being down 8-nil in the first five minutes and Belrose convincingly beat Asquith 54-18.

MANLY COVE'S BUBBLE BURSTS IN A FIERY CLASH AT BEACON HILL WITH ONE PLAYER SENT OFF AND TWO OTHERS SIN-BINNED

A depleted Manly Cove 'A' Grade, with four of their best players from the week before sidelined, were crushed by last year's premiers, Beacon Hill, 72-18 at Beacon Hill on Sunday (June 10 2001). Referee Rocky Davis sent a Beacon Hill player off and sin-binned two other Beacon Hill players in the game. In other weekend 'A' Grade results to hand Cromer defeated Hornsby 14-8 on Saturday night at Matthews Farm and Narraweena beat Christian Brothers 34-6 at Beverly Job. Shane Charman handled the latter game in his A grade debut, supported by Hoges and Rowdy. On hand for the game were the Director of Referees Rob Peard, Secretary Glen O'Brien, Manly Junior League President Col Burdon and last years' Director of Referees Phil Brown, all of whom by all accounts gave Shane the 'thumbs up'.

ASSOCIATION MEETING THIS TUESDAY NIGHT AT 7.30PM AT NOLANS RESERVE

The next Manly Refs association meeting is on this Tuesday night (June 12 2001) at 7.30pm in the Christian Brothers Clubrooms at Nolans 1. All members are expected to attend (other than Rocky Davis who will be at Judiciary). All recently qualified preliminary referees should also attend for formal admission to the Association.

WALSHIE KICKS ANOTHER GOAL. JASON AND LISA ARE EXPECTING THEIR FIRST CHILD

The Walshs' will be a threesome by Christmas with the birth of their baby expected on December 20 2001. The good news broke this week as the excited couple (does Jason ever get excited?) started planning for the new arrival. Jason trained the house down this week amidst abundant congratulations. All the Manly Refs wish Jason and Lisa the best of everything as they prepare to roll out their 2001 model.

SHANE CHARMAN BREAKS THROUGH TO 'A' GRADE
Top performing 'A' Reserve Grade referee Shane Charman has been appointed to his first A grade game. Shane will officiate in the Narraweena Vs Christian Brothers encounter on Sunday (June 10 2001).  He will be ably supported by Nathan Hogan and Rowdy Mercer. It will be a home game for the 'dream team' as the game will be played at Beverly Job.

MANLY COVE TOPPLE A GRADE COMPETITION LEADERS, VALLEYS, TO WIN 30-28

Manly Cove came from the bottom of the ladder on Sunday (June 3 2001) to spring the surprise of the year. After being down behind at half-time and down 10-0 at one one stage, Cove overcame all to go on and win 30-28. The game was at Nolans 13 and was handled by Rocky Davis with support from Glen O'Brien and Ralph Mills. The loss was a complete turnaround for Valleys who spent the week celebrating a brilliant 19-18 point win over last year's premiers Beacon Hill the week before. For Manly Cove it was two in a row with their second win of the season. Cove defeated Avalon last week in another nail biter 24-22.

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY SCOTTY MUIR!
Scotty Muir celebrated his 30th birthday Sunday (June 3 2001) at Hitchcock Park, refereeing his final game before heading off next weekend to Wagga. A regular "A" grader, Scotty  handled the Avalon Versus Narraweena A grade fixture at Avalon's home ground, flanked by Jayson Elkins and
Rowdy Mercer. The game was convincingly won by the home side.

ROWDY AND HOGES  APPOINTED TO REP GAMES
Rowdy Mercer and Nathan Hogan officiated Saturday (June 2 2001) at Reub Hudson Stadium  for games between New South Wales Combined Independent High Schools and the Manly Reps Development Squad. The games were switched from the Narrabeen Academy of Sport as the Academy grounds were water-logged. Both games were won convincingly by the local rep teams. Rowdy handled the Under 15s and Hoges the Under 17s. Saturday's game was a welcome relief for Rowdy, who earlier in the week was caught up in a furore over points awarded at Monday's training (see Training page). Hogan, who was suffering from arthritis  after turning 20 on Monday, has now recovered.

SCOTTY MUIR DOES HIS FINAL 'A' GRADE GAME THIS WEEKEND BEFORE RETURNING HOME TO WAGGA

Scotty Muir, who first came to Manly in 1997, will be heading back home to Wagga on the June long weekend. His last A grade game was Sunday (June 3 2001). Scott plans to take up with Group 9 again where he already has five seasons in first grade under his belt. Scott refereed in Group 9 before joining Manly Refs in 1997. He then returned to Wagga only to arrive back again last year. He has been a regular A grader and is part of the New South Wales rep squad. Manly Refs wish Scotty and his wife Melissa, and youngsters Sarah Jane and James, all the very best for their future back home.

VALLEYS DOWN BEACON HILL WITH A FIELD GOAL ON THE BELL TO WIN 19-18

In one of the best games of the year, Valley A Grade downed last year's premiers, Beacon Hill, in a thriller at Harbord Park Sunday (May 27 2001). With the scores level at 18-all with a minute to go, Valleys kicked a field goal from about 30 metres out which took the home side to the front. David Jay officiated with Matt Noyen and Ian Rigby on the lines. In other A grade results to hand Asquith 42 defeated Christian Brothers 10, Pennant Hills 24 downed Narraweena 16, Belrose defeated Hornsby 32-18, Cromer downed Forestville 26-6 and Manly Cove notched their first win of the season with a 24-22 result over Avalon.

A STANDING OVATION GREETS DAVID LOMBARDO AND ROBERT PEARD AS THEY DO IT 'THEIR WAY'

Live at the Golden Singapura on Friday night (May 25 2001) it was shades of Frank Sinatra and Perry Como as Peardy and Lombardo bought the huge crowd in attendance to their feet with a stirring rendition of the Sinatra classic 'My Way'. Emotions ran high with hardly a dry eye in the joint. The highlight was the crashing crescendo and Como (Peardy) dropping to his knees as the crowd rose. This memorable event will long be remembered, well past Monday.

'HOGES' TURNS 20
Nathan Hogan left  behind his teenage years on the weekend as he ventured into the World of adulthood. On Monday (May 28 2001) he turned 20. Asked whether he'll missed being asked for his ID, he says he hasn't been asked for it since he was 16. He was last seen on Friday night carrying a keg.

MANLY REFS SOCIAL EVENT A SUCCESS AS THE CATCH CALL IS 'COME ON DOWWWWWN'
