Peter O'Dwyer, CEO of the Manly Junior League, was the first of the existing board members of the Manly Football Club to be re-elected, at the annual general meeting last week. Peter polled 177 votes, ahead of former players Max Krilich with 161, and Paul Vautin with 147. Terry Randall was also in the running for the 3 board spots, but missed out with a tally of 121 votes. Manly has finally transformed from the Northern Eagle imprimatur, and will return full-time to Brookvale Oval in 2003. |

Flashback: Remembering Clive Rogers
Back more decades that anyone can remember was a referee called Clive Rogers. Clive ran the Pittwater Pony Club and was so involved they named the ground alongside Warringah Rugby Park after him. Warringah Rugby Park was nicknamed 'Rat Park' by the Leaguies. In those days the NSW Referees used to hold an annual Touch Day. When Manly hosted the day it was at Rat Park. The ground alongside was named the Clive Rogers Equestrian Park. We're told Clive was also a bookmaker's clerk, and when he was given centres' on the Saturday they had to make sure he could finish in time to get to the races. After Sundays' games he'd finish up at Barry Cross's place for tea. He reckoned Barry's wife (who has six sisters) wasn't the 'best looking' dame around, but was the 'best cooking'. |

MANLY REFS SURVIVE JAMBEROO
The end of season trip for the training squad was a great success Sunday (November 24 2002). The crew boarded a vintage 1960s bus in Manly, and headed off down the south coast to Jamberoo. Rocky was the first to break open a VB at 8:35am, and was seen hitting his second at 8:55am. Also on board was Rocky II (Ryan), Dave Jay, Rob Peard, Dane, Dave Naughton, Rowdy, Rheanna, John Mac, Danielle, Finchie, Dave Lombardo, Scott, Bevan and Shane Armstrong. About midway, Rocky was seen to be dozing off, and so too was Dave Naughton. Somebody commented that it was good that Dave Naughton wasn't the driver. After a little more than a couple of hours, the crew arrived at Jamberoo, and was into the tobogganing, waterslides, go-karts, and the "rock" jump. In between was a great Aussie Barbeque, with Dean Pymble's Coral Trouts waiting on the Tarts and the Trainers. A little after 4pm (sharp) the crew was back on the bus and heading back to Sydney. Some of the team were seen (and heard) to be chatting up girls from passing cars, while others read newspapers, sipped on the occasional beer, or sat back and listened to the music as the countryside passed by. In-all a great day, well organised, and everyone had a great time, even Saxon Williams who missed the bus, but still made it to Jamberoo. |

GUILFORD AND MERRYLANDS COMBINE TO BEAT NORTH SHORE IN MAORI TOURNAMENT IN FINAL SECONDS
In a carnival-like atmosphere at Forestville Oval Saturday (November 9 2002), the three-team round robin of Sydney-metro Maori players, culminated in a stunning win to Guilford/Merrylands. Playing in blistering hot conditions, the sides were level at half time, at 6-all. Midway Through the second half, Guilford Merrylands shot clear, to lead 18-6. North Shore, with Kane Mason of Valleys at half-back, speared a recovery to 18-16, and then swept past the westerners, to lead 22-18, with seconds to go. Then in the final moments, Guildford Merrylands flashed home with a miraculous try. As the bell sounded, and the kick was being lined up, the sides were level at 22-all. The kicker didn't flinch, as the day's football came down to a kick at goal. The westerners won the North Shore Maori Cup, 24-22. Frank Samyia had charge of the first half of the game, whilst Greg Kidd did the honours in the second. The day's events was marred for the referees, as the 8 (half) games set down for play didn't eventuate. A shortage of numbers mid-way through led to a re-shuffling of referees, however it was then discovered only 6 games were to be played, which meant there was a surplus. The final, scheduled for 10 to 4, actually commenced at 2.30pm. |

MANLY REFS LAWN BOWLS PENNANT DECIDED
Monday (September 2 2002), Manly Refs descended on Harbord Bowling Club, for Lawn Bowls. This was in place of the usual, annual Golf Day, and attracted nearly 30 'bowlers.
Prior to the event, a BBQ was held, and drinks were served. Teams were then announced, and the tournament was on. As most players had to learn the game as it went, along with the Etiquette of bowling, it was a while before players settled into the swing of things. Once they did, some superb athlethicism shone through. Drink-runners were kept busy serving orange juice, and other refreshments. Fashion was not altogether in vogue, as there were few outfits that took the eye. The most colourful of course was Luke Eisenhauer, who was decked out in a colourful yellow blouse, green pants, and a floppy white hat, from last years schoolies. Master of ceremonies, Rocky Davis, was decked out in a bright Hawaiian shirt, and Jayson Elkins will be remembered for his Fonzie shirt, and look-a-like haircut. Hoges too was wearing an Hawaiian shirt, which probably looked better a couple of years ago, before it faded. A big crowd (1)was seen to be looking on, who was later identified as Barry Cross. Rowdy, fresh from Sunday's standby touch judge duties, who would best be described as a bowler as 'incomplete', looked further at sea after taking tuition from Barry. Carl Pymble, who is an experienced bowler, had a good game, and got the 3 points for the day. This had nothing to do with Bowls though. There are many stories that could be told, but the old adage "what happens on the field, stays on the field" applies. This is the Etiquette of Bowls. As it went, at the presentation ceremony which followed, the team captained by Dane Pymble, running true to form (Dane captained the unsuccessful Custard Tarts in the training season), came last, and were presented with "stress balls". Aside from Dane, this team comprised Stretch (Shane Armstrong), Rheanna, Danielle, and Bevan. In equal fourth place, came Dennis Boyd Skinner's team, which consisted of Keith Anderson, Carl, and Finchie. No-one could work out how they finished equal 4th, as they beat the two teams they played. They were each presented with a Heineken pint glass. The other equal 4th team was that headed by Hoges, and comprised Shane Charman (who was answering to the names "pinhead" and "doughnut", which he picked up during Sunday's game), Rowdy and Jayson Elkins. In 3rd place came Greg Kidd's team, which also included John Mac and North Sydney representatives Adam and Cameron. They received VB caps. 2nd in the tournament was Peardy's team, including David Jay, Langie, and Brett Eisenhauer. They were presented with Heineken caps. Then the winners were announced, captained by veteran bowler Rocky Davis, and including David Naughton, and his Dad, and Luke. They were presented with a choice of Heineken or Tooheys shirts. Unfortunately the Etiquette of Bowls was not followed closely. For next year, if the event is repeated, we feature some aspects of the Etiquette, which were probably not complied with to their full extent:
It is a nice gesture to commend a good bowl of your opponent, and of a player in your own team; you will find that he will do the same for you.
In bowls, whether competitive or social, gentlemen players must wear white or cream trousers; white or cream socks and white or tan smooth shoes.
The wearing of white or cream shorts to an approved design is permitted, and if worn, long white or cream socks must be worn.
Ladies attire is an all-white frock with short or long sleeves; white smooth heel-less shoes with stockings of a "mini beige" colour. White hats must be worn with or without a dark green underlining on the brim.
Remember that the men in your team are as anxious as you are to win, and that it is bad form to remind any of them that he has had a bad bowl - he knows that equally well as you do; and it hurts him more if you remind him of it by word, grimace or action. Remember also that all bowlers play bad bowls at times, and lose games too. Cheap sarcasm or disparaging remarks as to the play of their men; or of their opponents, are not expressed by good bowlers.
It is a nice practice for a player to pick up his opponents bowl and hand it to him when he is about to get on the mat; and reciprocity of this gesture will likewise be appreciated.
It goes without saying that it is undecidedly bad form for any bowler to use bad language during a match or elsewhere. Bowls is a game of good sportsmanship.
The friendliness of Bowls is not advanced by the tendency towards cliquism. This inclination is hostile to the best interests of the club, opposed to the Etiquette of the game, and should be rigurously suppressed.
Persons not engaged in a match have their obligations (note Barry Cross). First of all they are required to preserve strict neutrality; whilst they are within their rights in applauding good shots, it is definately bad form for advice to be given by them to a player. Players should confine themselves to the match, and not mingle with the spectators or converse too freely with them.
It is contrary to Etiquette to attempt to distract the attention of the player on the mat as he is about to bowl. This distraction may be caused by talking loudly to the player, or to others so that the player may hear what is said. The distraction can also result from over-loud remarks; and be caused by interrupting the players attention, by other acts. Gentleman players do not wilfully do this sort of thing. The spirit of sportsmanship is manliness and friendliness.
Control your joy when you win, be able to "take it" when you lose. Be a man and behave like one (not applicable to Danielle and Rheanna), and be convinced that you have carried off the best of victories, if your opponent of today becomes your friend of tomorrow.

MONA VALE GO DOWN BY A NARROW MARGIN IN THE NORTH SYDNEY A GRADE COMPETITION
Local district team Mona Vale, featured in the neighbouring North Sydney A Grade Grand Final, at North Sydney Oval Sunday (September 1 2002). After a whirlwind finish, having come from 5th position, the local team was narrowly beaten 34-28, by West Ryde. West Ryde took control early, notching up 3 tries, but were then put under pressure by 4 consecutive Mona Vale tries. From there the lead see-sawed, until the closing minutes when West Ryde once again took charge. |

THE WEEKEND
The agony and the ecstasy of grand final football continued at Lionel Watts Sunday (September 1 2002), producing two deliriously happy winners, and two devastated opponents. The Under 17s provided the largest doses, with the sides level-pegging to full time, finishing the game 22-all. It was Harbord United and Forestville playing it out, with Jayson Elkins overseeing, and Rowdy Mercer and Danielle Berry touch-judging. Forestville looked set to triumph, leading by 4 points with seconds to go. Then in a miraculous, or heart-breaking moment (depending on which team you followed), Harbord intercepted and ran the length-of-the-field, to score under the posts. The conversion to seal the game, never looked like missing. In the Under 15s, expectant father Greg Kidd, celebrated Fathers Day at the helm of the Under 15s Grand Final between Christian Brothers and Narraweena. Matt Finch and Dane Pymble brought up the rear. The game was convincingly won by Narraweena, the final score 48-10. And so the weekend of celebration/carnage came to an end, and the curtain came down on the 2002 season, long to be remembered by some, and fast forgotten by others. |

BELROSE OVER-POWER THE MINOR PREMIERS, TO TAKE THE 2002 A GRADE FLAG
In the upset of the season, Belrose outplayed minor-premiers Beacon Hill, at Brookvale Oval Saturday (August 31 2002), to win the 2002 A Grade premiership. After leading the season early, Belrose slumped mid-season, whilst Beacon Hill, overcame an early loss to last years premiers Cromer, to complete the pre-finals season undefeated. A blistering hot day, and the week off, took its toll on the minor-premiers, as Belrose, a team heavily bruised in last weeks final with Valleys, overcame the odds to sweep to victory. At half-time the 'Roses led 11-4, but by the final bell had notched up a 29 to 16 score, to run out comfortable winners. Dave Lombardo was on hand to adjudicate his first Manly district A Grade Grand Final. Paul Harradine, and Ian Rigby, stood watch on the lines. The game was played before a major crowd, which was the trend for Junior League Grand Finals, throughout the day. In the Reserve Grade prior, with Rob Peard in charge, and Dale Martinuzzo and John McEvoy touch-judging, it came down to a field goal to separate the level-pegging Cromer and Valley United sides. Victory ultimately went to Valleys, making up for their loss in last years Grand Final. The final score was 11-10. Valleys also took out the Under 19s Premiership, after beating Pennant Hills. Shane Charman controlled that game, with support from Frank Samyia and Rocky Davis. Meanwhile, the Under 16s Grand Final between Asquith and North Curl Curl, saw a reverseal of last years Under 15s Grand Final, when the same two sides played, with Asquith winning. This year it was North Curl Curl taking the spoils. Nathan Hogan refereed the game, whilst Saxon Williams and Ralph Mills swivelled the sticks. On Sunday (September 1 2002) at Lionel Watts, the Under 17s Grand Final, between Harbord United and Forestville, will be staged. The game will be preceded by the Under 15s Grand Final, between Christian Brothers and Naraweena. |

BIG CROWDS IN ATTENDANCE AS JUNIOR GRAND FINALS ARE PLAYED
Premiership winners for all grades were decided in a series of Grand Finals, played on 3 separate grounds, Saturday (August 31 2002). Big crowds turned out for the occasion, the weather was fine, and the atmosphere at the grounds was superb. The first game, the Under 7s/1 kicked off at 8:30am at St. Matthews Farm, with Addie Flippance at the helm, Luke Eisenhauer and Rheanna Hesp on the lines. The winner was Narrabeen over Beacon Hill. Meantime at Lionel Watts at 8:45am Bevan Bourke was lining up the Under 7s/2, with support from Shane Armstrong and Clinton Rowley. For Christian Brothers, it was going to be their first of 3 premierships to be won on the day, and it was to be at the expense of Forestville. Over at Harbord Park, Phil Brown was warming up for the Under 8s/1, between Mona Vale and North Curl Curl. On his lines were Greg Kidd, and Scott Scheibel. The game was won by North Curl Curl. Back at St Matthews Farm, in the Under 8s/2, Belrose won the first of 3 premierships they would win on the day, defeating Narraweena. Dennis Boyd-Skinner had charge of the game, and touch judges were Luke Eisenhauer and Addie Flippance. In the Under 8s/3 at Lionel Watts, Clinton Rowley, with back-up from Shane Armstrong and Bevan Bourke, saw Christian Brothers win their second grand final of the day, this time over Cromer. Rheanna Hesp, with Addie Flippance and Dennis Boyd-Skinner on the lines, then oversaw a Belrose win over Narrabeen in the Under 9s/1, at St Matthews Farm. Shane Armstrong had charge of the Under 9s/2 at Lionel Watts. Jayson Elkins and Clinton Rowley manned the lines. This game was won by Harbord United, defeating Christian Brothers. Then it was the Under 10s, with the first drama of the day, seeing both grades having to go into extra time. At Lionel Watts, with Carl Pymble in charge of the 10s/1, Jayson Elkins and Matt Finch on the lines, Cromer shot clear to lead 15-0 at half-time. Ironically, in the second half, their opponents Narrabeen, scored 15 points. In extra time Cromer, coached by Manly Ref Steve Chiddy, scored and converted, to win 20-15. It was the fourth consecutive grand final these sides had contested, and the first time Cromer had won. Meantime the 10s/2, over at Harbord Park, had Scott Scheibel, and touch judges Greg Kidd and Phil Brown working overtime, and the big crowd on their toes, as the northern neighbours Avalon and Mona Vale battled for honours. The game was drawn, and went into extra time. At the end of extra time the game was still drawn. In extra-extra time, Mona Vale finally got up to win. The game was followed by the 11s/1, which Ryan Alexander controlled. A tired Scott Scheibel, and a fresh Dane Pymble backed him up. The game was won by Manly Cove, defeating North Curl Curl. In the 11s/2, in the final match at Lionel Watts, Matt Finch, with Jayson Elkins and Carl Pymble, took care of Cromer and Harbord, with Cromer repeating the success they had in the 10s/1. Over at St Matthews Farm, in the final match of the day at that ground, Luke Eisenhauer, with Rheanna Hesp and Dennis Boyd-Skinner, oversaw a win to Hills Hawks Under 12s over Belrose. The Under 13s, at Harbord Park, with Danielle Berry in charge, and Graham Hart and Ryan Alexander on the touch lines, saw Christian Brothers win their third premiership of the day, beating Pennant Hills. Then in the last Junior game of the day, with Dane Pymble at the helm, and Graham Hart and Danielle Berry in support, Under 14s Grand Final was decided, with Narraweena defeating Christian Brothers. |

AVAILABILITY OF BROOKVALE OVAL FOR GRAND FINALS NOT CERTAIN
Despite a clearance by the District Club for the Junior League Grand Finals to be held at Brookvale Oval this Saturday (August 31 2002), it is not certain that the venue will ultimately be made available. The Manly Sea Eagles will play the Warriors at Brookvale on the following Sunday, and it is not certain whether there will be sufficient clean-up and preparation time. The Junior League has already had to forgo gate revenue from Sunday's Finals having been switched to Beverly Job, and no doubt will be pressing for Brookvale to be used. Having the Grand Finals played at Brookvale Oval highlights the importance of the local competitions, and adds to the occasion for players taking part. |

BELROSE BEAT VALLEYS FOR A GRAND FINAL BERTH
In one of the best A Grade games of the season, Belrose narrowly defeated Valleys 18-16 Sunday (August 25 2002), in the Final at Beverly Job, earning the right to meet minor-Premiers Beacon Hill in the Grand Final next Saturday. Today's game, refereed by David Lombardo, was switched from Brookvale Oval, to Beverly Job. The 'Roses took charge early, and 15 minutes into the game were leading 12-0, after two converted tries. The big lead was short-lived, however, with Valleys crossing the line for a try, which was converted, and Valleys trailed 12-6. The gap narrowed just on half-time, when Valleys crossed the line again. The try went unconverted, and at the break Belrose led 12-10. Three minutes into the second half Valleys put on a converted try, and took the lead, with the score going to 16-12. Twenty minutes later however, Belrose scored a try, which was converted, and the score went to 18-16. Valleys pressed Belrose's line, with 3 sets of six, but failed to score again. The Reserve Grade, with Rob Peard in charge, was another good game, with Cromer just edging out Beacon Hill to win 12-10. In The Under 19s, controlled by Shane Charman, Pennant Hills comfortably defeated Narrabeen 17-6, whilst in the Under 16s, refereed by Nathan Hogan, North Curl Curl defeated Belrose 34-4. |

CANTERBURY BULLDOGS IN CRISIS AS LEAGUE TAKES DRASTIC ACTION
The NRL has moved dramatically today (August 23 2002), in taking all points off the competition leaders, the Canterbury Bulldogs, depriving them of a place in the finals.
The club had led the first grade competition, and was the star of the season, having won their last 17 games.
The move comes in the wake of admissions by the club, that it breached the League's salary cap provisions by $1 million, in the past two seasons. This year the Bulldogs overspent by $400,000.
The club has also been fined $500,000.
The club will continue to participate in the competition, with 3 games remaining, but will be competing for the wooden spoon, and not the premiership.
The Bulldogs will also be required to take immediate steps to be within the cap by the start of the 2003 season.
“This is unquestionably a bitter day for Rugby League,” NRL Chief David Gallop, said today.
"Indeed the game has had its heart broken in an unexpected and tragic way.
The NRL feels deeply for the players and fans of the Bulldogs who are victims in this, but it feels just as strongly, that the players, and the fans, of other clubs in the finals, should not risk their dreams being shattered, because a club was allowed to get away with breaking the rules.
The nature of this breach can only be described as exceptional in both its size, and its deliberate and ongoing nature. The punishment must reflect that fact.
The only positive out of this is the chance the game now has to make a clear statement about the way in which its competitions will be run.
We have great faith in Rugby League and in its ability to overcome disappointments such as this”, Mr. Gallop said.
The NRL has arranged a refund through Ticketek for fans who have purchased finals series tickets, in anticipation of the Bulldogs involvement.
Late today, the entire board of the Bulldogs resigned. The club's CEO, Bob Hagen, one of the most respected administrators in the game, resigned earlier in the week.
Steve Mortimer, a Bulldogs player legend, has been appointed CEO.
A steering committee, headed by former first grade, and Australian Kangaroos captain, George Peponis, will run the club, until a new board is appointed.

HORNSBY BOW OUT, BEACON HILL GO TO THE GRAND FINAL, VALLEYS AND BELROSE TO FACE SUDDEN DEATH
Top class football was the order of the weekend, as finals got underway in all grades. In the A Grade Sunday (August 18 2002), two first rate, competitive games resulted in Beacon Hill advancing to the grand final on August 31st, whilst Belrose and Valleys will meet next Sunday, to decide who they will play. At Brookvale Oval, in the major-semi, controlled by Shane Charman, Beacon Hill and Belrose were level-pegging at 18-all, with just minutes to go. A late penalty goal tacked on the extra points for Belrose, to take the then score from 18-16, to 18-all. Beacon Hill, however, put on a late try, to win the game 22-18. The Hill had led 12-4 at half-time, two tries coming from near length-of-the-field intercepts, however, raids by Belrose in the second half, had the 'Roses looking, at various stages, as if they would win. In the end it got down to the goal-kicking. Each side scored 4 tries, with Beacon Hill converting 3, whilst Belrose converted none. Meantime, at Forestville Oval, in the minor-semi, with Dave Lombardo at the helm, it was a similar story, with Valleys leading 9-0, 20 minutes into the game. It was Hornsby, however, that steamed home, and despite 3 sets of 6 on their opposition's line in the closing minutes, they couldn't bridge the gap. Like Belrose, they must be rueing their lack of success in the goal-kicking department. They missed 3 kicks at goal, and lost 15-12. |

LAST YEARS A GRADE PREMIERS, CROMER, BOW OUT FOR 2002
In a hard fought, and tight, encounter at Waitara Park, Sunday (August 11 2002)Hornsby staved off a late challenge from Cromer, to win 16-14, denying Cromer a play-off for the finals. Cromer, who won the A Grade premiership last year, are now finished for the season. Hornsby led early in the game, and shot to 8-0, before Cromer hit back with a try. Midway through the second half, Hornsby led 16-8, but a converted try put the score at 16-14, with Cromer finishing the better of the two. Time ran out for the premiers however, and Hornsby held on to win. With only 2 points the difference, both coaches must be lamenting their lack of goal-kicking success. Despite 7 tries being scored in the game, only one was converted. Dave Jay had control of the game, his last for the season. He will now concentrate on the appointments for the finals, in his capacity as Director of Referees. In other games, with Shane Charman in charge, Valleys easily overcame Christian Brothers to win 64-14, and Beacon Hill 36 defeated Asquith 14. Jayson Elkins had control of that game. |

THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT.... TWICE
The venue was Lionel Watts. The occasion, the final A Grade competition game for Belrose and Forestville. It was Friday night (August 9 2002)under lights. Dave Lombardo the referee. Twelve minutes into the game the lights went out. The game was suspended whilst the lights were re-activated. The process, for the lights to warm-up, takes 10 minutes. The game re-started, and within 10 minutes the lights went out again. At this stage Dave Lombardo called half-time. A debate ensued as to whether the game should be cut-back, when Luke Eisenhauer reminded all that the rules state each game must comprise two equal halves. So the second half ran for 23 minutes, to match the first half of the same duration. The game was won by Belrose 32-0, but was more competitive than the score suggested. A big crowd was on hand for some good football, although one Forestville player was sent off, for an alleged high tackle. The A Reserve grade, with Rob Peard in control, was a cracker of a game, level-pegging for most of the way. The home side Belrose got up with a winning try, in the closing seconds of the game, which was converted. The final score 28-22. |

A GRADE, A RESERVE GRADE, UNDER 19S GRAND FINALS TO BE PLAYED AT BROOKVALE OVAL
The Manly Junior League met in emergency session last night (August 5 2002), to determine the venue for the Junior League grand finals, originally set down for September 1 2002, at Brookvale Oval. It now transpires that Manyl will play their second last competition game, against the Auckland Warriors, at Brookvale Oval, on the same date. After much deliberation last night, it was decided the A Grade, A Reserve Grade, and Under 19s grand finals would be played at Brookvale Oval, on the Saturday, August 31 2002. A decision on when, and where, grand finals for the other grades, will be played, has yet to be made. |

Rowdy Mercer, Greg Kidd And Luke Eisenhauer Get Good Reports From Downtown
Tony Kelly, NSWRL Referees Advisory Board member, was on hand at Beverly Job on Sunday (August 4 2002), to take a look at up-and-coming referees Luke Eisenhauer, Greg Kidd, and Rowdy Mercer.
Luke handled the Under 15s between Narraweena and Mona Vale, Greg the Valleys Vs Beacon Hill Under 19s, and Rowdy the A Reserve Grade between Naraweena and Valleys. All three acquitted themselves well, and got good reports. Greg Kidd had a fiery game, which resulted in 3 players being sent off, and for Rowdy Mercer, it was his first A Reserve grade game. |

A GRADE HEATS UP AS FINALS APPROACH
Another good round of A Grade football on the weekend, with all games being competitive, and every side being in a winning position for much of each game. At Beacon Hill Oval Sunday (August 4 2002), Dave Lombardo sent two off, in a game which saw Belrose lead the prime premiership contender 20-10 at half time. Beacon Hill eventually got the upper hand, to win 34-20. At Beverly Job, with Dave Jay in control, Valleys and Narraweena were locked 6-all at half time. In the second half Valleys overcame the home side to win 28-12. In the Saturday night game, with Jayson Elkins at the helm, Christian Brothers led Forestville 12-nil at half time. In the second half Forestville came to life, eventually winning 22-14. Interestingly, every point was scored at the same end, against a howling breeze. As reported earlier, Cromer defeated Asquith 36-16 at Storey Park, a game which was level-pegging, midway into the second half.

GRAND FINALS VENUE UP IN THE AIR AS MANLY SEA-EAGLES TIE UP BROOKVALE OVAL
The Manly Junior League will meet Monday night (August 5 2002) this week to discuss, and decide, the venue for the 2002 Grand Finals, which had been set down for Brookvale Oval. It now turns out that Manly will play Auckland on the Sunday of the Junior League grand finals, and the game will be at Brookvale. Options to be discussed include using a local field, such as Foresvtille Oval, to bringing the grand finals forward, by scrubbing the final competition games next Sunday. A Friday night schedule is not out of the question, but would be difficult because of the number of games to be played. Another option is Manly Oval. |

CROMER OVERCOME A DEFIANT ASQUITH AT STOREY PARK
In a hard fought, competitive game at Storey Park, Cromer A Grade had to work hard to overcome a defiant Asquith side Sunday (August 4 2002), to eventually win 36-16. At half time the score was 16-14, and until midway through the second half the game could have gone either way. It was in the last 15 minutes, however, that Cromer put on 3 tries to seal the game. Shane Charman was in command. |

CONGRATULATIONS RHEANNA HESP, BEVAN BOURKE ON BROOKVALE CURTAIN-RAISERS
Congratulations go out to Rheanna Hesp, and Bevan Bourke, on their appointments to curtain-raisers to the Manly Sea-Eagles NRL first grade games, at Brookvale Oval. THE AGEING HOGES GETS INTO THE SWING OF THINGS
Its no co-incidence, but within a day of being added to the Special Squad, our social guru, Nathan Hogan, is proposing changing the mad Monday golf day to a "Lawn Bowls Day". Hoges, who turned 21 a few weeks ago, has seen his youth slip away, and is obviously adjusting to his new circumstances. Appointed to the Forestville Vs Christian Brothers Reserve Grade this Saturday night (August 3 2002), at Forestville Oval, Nathan becomes the youngest member of the Special Squad. His first reaction was to send an email out to all active members advising of his new idea. Getting a golf course to host us on the Monday after the grand final, it seems has been complicated by clubs not being able to obtain insurance. There's also a question about drinks on the course. The idea of a Lawn Bowls Day has merit. It'd suit our sponsor, it'd cost less, it's be in the afternoon, and it'd suit our older members.......like, for example, Hoges!. |

BEACON HILL EDGE OUT VALLEYS TO WIN 22-16
In a hard fought game, competition leaders Beacon Hill, by the margin of a converted try, defeated the vastly improving Valleys side at Beacon Hill Oval Sunday (July 28 2002), in the A Grade. The final score, in what was a competitive, open, and relatively incident-free game was 22-16. Valleys were in the match until the end, demonstrating that they can get by without playmaker Kane Mason, who is out for the season with a quad tear. Dave Jay was at the helm, in place of Jayson Elkins who was switched to the Saturday night game, because of rep commitments on the Sunday. The Saturday night game saw a win to Belrose over Narraweena, the final score being 54-16. At Forestville Oval, with Shane Charman in charge, Asquith defeated a depleted Forestville side 34-12. The A Reserve Grade was a fiery affair with Rocky Davis sending 3 players off after an all-in brawl. In the game at Waitara, Hornsby 64 beat Christian Brothers nil. Dave Lombardo had the game. In other news on the weekend, Frank Sweeny replaced Ian Rigby in the reggies, after Ian incurred a leg injury, and Greg Kidd in the Under 19s had his first send-off, since joining the association. |

VALLEYS CEMENT A POSITION IN THE FINAL FOUR AT THE EXPENSE OF CROMER
Valleys have taken a strong step forward in their bid to contest the finals series, with a solid 32-20 win over Cromer at St Matthews Farm Sunday (July 21 2002). The game was intense from the outset, but a couple of strategic early penalties from referee David Lombardo, and a decision to use the sin-bin early, settled the sides down, and good football followed. The game, however, belonged to Valleys who dominated both halves, although Cromer ventured into play on a number of occasions, only to squander opportunities close to their line. The result sees Valleys in the final four, and Cromer out. In other games Beacon Hill easily downed Forestville 52-4, and Narraweena defeated Hornsby. Narraweena had a big day at Beverly Job with their Reserve Grade having their first win of the season, defeating a depleted Hornsby 36-0. |

NIGHT OF COMEBACKS AT NOLANS 1 SATURDAY
Saturday (July 20 2002) in two extraordinary games of football, Asquith by narrow margins, defeated home side Christian Brothers, in both the A and A Reserve Grade. Each game was separated by two entirely different halves. Christian Brothers A Grade led 22-4 at the break, but saw their lead whittled to 22-18 with just minutes to go. Then in the final stage of the game Asquith drew away, to win 32 -22. The Reserve Grade saw Asquith dominate the first half, only to be levelled by Christian Brothers towards the latter stages of the second half. A final try by Asquith, however put paid to the game, although the final score was 36-32. Shane Charman had charge of the first grade, while John McEvoy shared the honours of the Reserve Grade with Frank Samyia. According to John the game, was scheduled to start at 6:30PM, however started early at 6:00PM. As John said after the game, it was a shame that both touch judges, both teams, all the officials, and the supporters all got the game time wrong. |

CLOSE ENCOUNTER BETWEEN FORESTVILLE AND NARRAWEENA AT BEVERLY JOB
Forestville had to work hard to overcome a tenacious Narraweena, at Beverly Job Park on Sunday (July 14 2002), in the only A Grade game of the round. With 5 minutes to go Forestville led 26-21, however a try after the final siren had the Ferrets more comfortably ahead at 30-21.
The game was refereed by Dave Lombardo, with support from Dave Naughton and Frank Samyia. In the earlier A Reserve Grade game Forestville dominated the first half to lead 24-0, but it was Narraweena who dominated the second half, holding Forestville scoreless, while scoring 10 points. The final result 24-10. |

70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED IN STYLE
Manly Refs celebrated their 70th anniversary in style Friday night (July 12 2002), at the Harbourview Hotel in North Sydney.
Packed with about 80 attendees, including NSW Referees Association President Tony Danks, representatives of Wests, Canterbury, and a large contingent from North Sydney, the night went off without a hitch. A delicious 3 course meal, free-flowing beer, wine, spirits, and soft drinks, a band which had everyone on their feet, and entertainment from comedian Brian Doyle were the highlights. Brian also entertained at our 60th anniversary. Dave Naughton, our newest life member was presented with his Life Member's blazer, and Shane Charman, one of our most eligible bachelors, toasted the ladies. Dave Jay was master of ceremonies, introduced by President Rob Peard, who welcomed everyone on board for the big occasion.
Congratulations to all concerned for a well-organised, and memorable night. |

BELROSE OVERWHELM CROMER TO WIN 41-16 IN A GRADE
Belrose announced their 'second coming' on Sunday (July 7 2002) at Lionel Watts, with a comprehensive 41-16 win over the more favoured Cromer. The 'Roses were convincing throughout, with a half-time scoreline of 22-10. In all Belrose came up with 7 tries, to Cromer's 3. David Lombardo had charge of the game. Meantime, over at Harbord Park, David Jay sin-binned three players, and sent a trainer off, as Valleys defeated Asquith 26-16. Up at Waitara Park, Shane Charman oversaw a 24-0 win to the home-side over Forestville, while at Nolans 1, Christian Brothers recorded their first win of the season, defeating Narraweena 34-18. The win was particularly good as the 'Brothers had trailed 16-12 at half time. Referee Jayson Elkins sent a Narraweena player off during the game, for an alleged trip. |

Opportunities For Graded Refs, And Reps Squad To Diminish
First Division, and the two Metro Cup grades are likely to go next year, and be replaced by two open age competitions, tentatively named the Premier League, and the Seniors Cup.
The NRL will only operate a first grade competition. The two lesser competitions will be governed by the New South Wales Rugby League, and will be open to New South Wales based sides only. NRL, Metro Cup, and other interested clubs will be able to apply. It's not inconceivable that clubs such as Beacon Hill, and Asquith, will be able to apply, given that the salary cap for the Seniors Cup will be $150,000. The Premier League cap will be $400,000. The effective wash-up, from the refereeing point of view, is that there will be one less competition. In addition, it is planned that the Flegg will be shortened to an 8-week competition, the SG Ball to 6 weeks, and Harold Matthews to just 1 weekend. The age levels of the rep competitions will also change (again), with the Flegg to 18 years, and the SG Ball to 16 years, although there are moves afoot to have this change reversed. |

Valleys Extended To Beat Forestville in A Grade
Valleys had to call on all their resources to overcome a resiliant Forestville, in the A Grade at Forestville Oval Sunday (June 30 2002). With 15 minutes to go Valleys had a slender 14-12 lead, however in the closing minutes a 'flop' penalty, resulted in a 6-pointer to the visitors, and a 20-12 win. David Jay had charge of the game. Up at Beacon Hill Oval, Hornsby Reserve Grade forfeited to Beacon Hill, and a depleted Hornsby A Grade were overwhelmed by the competition leaders, 64-0. One player was sent off in the 42nd minute by referee David Lombardo. Meantime at Storey Park, Shane Charman oversaw a 22-6 win to Belrose, over Asquith. Despite the final result, from all reports, the game was competitive to the end, with the half-time score 8-6. Asquith had led earlier, 6-0. On the Saturday night under lights (naturally) at St. Matthews Farm, Cromer defeated Narraweena 34-20. The game again was very competitive, with the score at 28-20, with 5 minutes to go. |

BEACON HILL CONSOLIDATES A GRADE PREMIERSHIP LEAD, DEFEATING CROMER 28-4
One of the best crowds all year turned out Sunday (June 23 2002), for the Beacon Hill-Cromer A Grade clash at Beacon Hill Oval. What followed was a comprehensive win by the local side over the Kingfishers, reversing the outcome of their earlier encounter in the year, when Cromer defeated Beacon Hill 18-14, under lights at St. Matthews Farm. The tries started in the opening minutes, and continued throughout the game. At half-time the score was 14-0, and at the close of play, 28-4. The difference in the two sides, largely, was Beacon Hill half-back Ben Black, who had a hand in most tries. The game was a fiery affair with touch judges, in both the A and A Reserve Grade games, kept busy. Three players were sin-binned in the A Grade by referee Rocky Davis, whilst in the Reserve Grade, which resulted in an upset win to Cromer, one player was sent off, and two sin-binned, by referee Ian Rigby.
In the only other A Grade game played on the weekend, Valleys snuck away with a win over Hornsby, in the closing minutes of another good game of football, at Harbord Park. The score was 24-22 with 8 minutes to go, however a Hornsby try was disallowed, the resultant scrum was won by Valleys, and the set of 6 that followed resulted in a try to the home team. The game, refereed by Jayson Elkins, was won by Valleys 36-22. The Reserve Grade, with Rob Peard in charge, also saw a Valleys win over Hornsby, the score 32-0. |

MANLY COMBINED A GRADE DEFEATS COMBINED ST. GEORGE 42-18
The strength of the Manly A Grade competition was underlined by an overwhelming victory to the combined Manly representative team, over their St. George counterparts, at Kogarah Oval during the week.
The game on the Wednesday night (June 19 2002), was won by Manly 42-18. Coach of the side, which is preparing for the annual Manly-South Sydney Charity Match, on Saturday July 13 2002, is Phil Foster, while captain is Frank McKee. Man of the match in Wednesday night's encounter was Ben Black.
In a curtain-raiser to the A Grade, the Manly Under 13s Representative Squad, was narrowly beaten by St. George. One of the star players, and try scorers, according to newspaper reports, was Drew Mercer, brother of Rowdy. The team will next play North Sydney on July 3. |

MOST OF THE SENIOR GRADES TAKE THE WEEKEND OFF
Only two A Grade, and A Reserve Grade, and one Under 19s games will be played this weekend. Originally set down as a free weekend, to slot in games cancelled due to wet weather, two sets of A Grade fixtures have now been scheduled for Sunday.
The games will involve clubs most affected by the South Sydney representative games, to be held in July at Redfern Oval.
On that weekend, clubs that are not so affected, will play.
On Sunday (June 23 2002), Beacon Hill will play Cromer at Beacon Hill Oval. The game sees a return to A Grade of Rocky Davis, while the Reserve Grade will be handled by Ian Rigby.
In the other game, to be refereed by Jayson Elkins, Valleys will play Hornsby at Harbord Park. Rob Peard will be in charge of the A Reserve Grade.
Saxon Williams is the only other referee with a centre, the Under 19s between Christian Brothers and Beacon Hill. For the Junior refs, it will be business as usual with Matt Finch, Luke Fittock, Dave Naughton, Bevan Bourke, Addie Flippance, Dane Pymble, Philip Brown, Clinton Rowley, Carl Pymble, Luke Eisenhauer (back from injury), Scott Scheibel, Dennis Boyd-Skinner, Adam Hennessy, and Rheanna Hesp, all taking to the field in Saturday games.

BELROSE BACK IN BUSINESS, CHRISTIAN BROTHERS OUT IN FULL FORCE, AND BEACON HILL EXTEND TO BEAT NARRAWEENA
Belrose are back in the A Grade winners circle, after 3 consecutive losses. What's more, they easily defeated the vastly improving Valley United side. The final score of the game on Sunday (June 16 2002), centered by Nathan Hogan, was 34-18. The other surprise result of the round was the Beacon Hill-Narraweena game, at Beverly Job, with Dave Lombardo in the middle. Competition leaders Beacon Hill won the game by a narrower margin than expected, 26-12. David Jay had the Cromer versus Christian Brothers game at Nolans 1, which was won by Cromer 38-12. It was good to see the 'Brothers fielding sides in A and A Reserve grade, after their forfeits last week to Beacon Hill. In other news, Frank Sweeny had a send-off in the Narraweena and Berowra Under 15s, and there were a number of sin bins, including 3 from Danielle Berry in the Belrose Vs Christian Brothers Under 15s, and 2 from Ryan Alexander in the Asquith Vs. Narrabeen Under 14s. A late report also has Bevan Bourke, sending a player off in his first Under 11s game last weekend, between Belrose and Cromer at Lionel Watts. |

After being undefeated for most of the first round, Belrose succumbed to another loss at the weekend, losing to Hornsby at Waitara Park on Sunday (June 9 2002). Belrose hit the front in the first few minutes with a try set up by Josh Stuart. Hornsby responded soon after, setting the stage for a tight game into the second half, where Belrose struggled to bridge the gap. With 20 minutes to go the home side led 18-10. Shortly after, however, Belrose came up with two tries, and with a conversion led 20-18, and looked set to win the game. Then in the last 5 minutes Hornsby rallied to put on two length-of-the-field tries, both of which were converted, to win the game 30-20. In the middle was Dave Lombardo, with support from Paul Harradine and Frank Sweeny. In other games Cromer defeated Forestville 32-0, with Shane Charman in charge, and at Beverly Job with Jayson Elkins backing up from a Saturday Flegg game, Narraweena defeated Asquith 30-18. |

BELROSE TOPPLED, AS VALLEYS CONTINUE COMEBACK
In a hard fought clash at Harbord Park Sunday (June 2 2002), Valley United defeated Belrose 20-16. Valleys led for most of the game, but Belrose kept fighting back, in a quest to retain their equal lead in the A Grade competition. Late in the game Valleys led 20-10, but a converted try by the visitors, five minutes from full time, bridged the gap. Shane Charman was in charge of proceedings capping off a busy weekend. Shane handled the Balmain Vs St George Flegg centre on Saturday (June 1 2002) at Leichardt Oval. BELROSE BUBBLE BURSTS
After being undefeated all year, competition leaders Belrose, succumbed to a Beacon Hill onslaught on Sunday (May 26 2002) at Lionel Watts. The homeside was convincingly beaten 32-10. Belrose led 4-0 with two minutes remaining before half-time, however two Beacon Hill tries in those crucial minutes, laid the platform for the Roses' first defeat of the year. Superior fitness, and a sensational display by the Black brothers, half-back Ben, and centre Nathan, made the difference. The game was refereed by Dave Lombardo. With both sides having lost one game each, Beacon Hill and Belrose are now joint competition leaders. |

MAYHEM AT BEVERLY JOB AS SHANE CHARMAN TAKES A DIVE, IAN RIGBY RETURNS TO A GRADE, AND SCOTTY BURDON MAKES A COMEBACK
The scene was all set in the opening minutes when Shane Charman, in charge of the Cromer Vs Asquith A Grade game at Beverly Job, twisted one of his two ankles. Shane limped through to half-time, when Ian Rigby, following a warm-up smoke, took to the field to referee the second half. Ian had already done the A Reserve Grade game, and had been on the A Grade line, with Graham Hart. With Ian in the centre, this left Appointments Board member, and former serial A Grade grand final referee, Scott Burdon, with no option but to make a come-back, and man the line in the second half. A late report says Shane is confident of being back next week. Cromer surprisingly defeated Asquith by a whopping 52 to 8. In other games, Forestville defeated an improved Christian Brothers 30-22 at Nolans 1, after the homeside led 18-10 early in the game. Dave Jay had charge of the game. An unusual event in the Reserve Grade was the awarding of an 8-point try by Rocky Davis. At Harbord Park, with the ageing Nathan Hogan at the helm, Valleys defeated Narraweena 34-0. |

SHANE ARMSTRONG OUT WITH KNEE INJURY
Missing in action this past week, from appointments and training, has been up-and-coming junior referee, Shane Armstrong. It appears Shane suffered a chipped bone in his knee, while playing for the Forestville Under 16s, against Christian Brothers, at Harbord Park on Sunday (May 12 2002). The game, refereed by Frank Samyia, preceded the controversial Concord Burwood Vs Harbord Under 17s, in which 3 players were sent off. Shane will be out for a minimum 6 to 8 weeks, but it could be longer, if doctors opt for a full knee reconstruction. Tough luck Shane, but all the best for a speedy recovery, and hopefully we'll see you back, playing and refereeing, before year's end. |

UNION SWOOPS ON NORTHPOWER
As rumours circulate this week that the district club, Manly, will abandon NorthPower Stadium, in favour of all games being played at Brookvale Oval, rugby union has intensified it's interest in the venue. Gordon Rugby Club is to adopt the stadium as its home ground, for the NSW Tooheys Cup competition, starting next month. The club will be sponsored by Gosford FM radio station 2GO, and will be known as the 2GO Highlanders. Behind the move is John Singleton, who has secured the marketing rights to the ground, from the North Sydney District Rugby League Club. Singleton has also secured NorthPower is one of the venues for next year's World Cup. Next month, France, the reigning Six Nations champions, will play Australia at NorthPower.
The Gosford stadium was built especially for rugby league, and cost $25 million. Poor attendances of the Eagles games this year, are behind Manly's decision to quit the ground. The club has heavily promoted it's games to the Central Coast, and has had major media backing, with local newspapers, TV, and radio breaking stories on the club's activities. This Saturday's game, against the Bulldogs, is likely to be the last at NorthPower for the foreseeable future. With torrential rain heading into the weekend, the signs are not good for gate expectations. Nor are the prospects for a win. |

JASON WALSH BREAKS THROUGH TO FIRST DIVISION
Perseverance has paid off for Walshy, who this week has been appointed to his first First Division game. Jason has been awarded the centre of the Balmain Vs. North Sydney First Division at Leichardt Oval, to be held under lights at 7:30pm on Friday (May 24 2002). The move is fairly spectacular as Jason was doing a Metro Cup Reserve Grade game on the weekend just gone, and a number of NRL referees including Stephen Clark, are currently in First Division. 7 VGs in the game didn't do any harm however, and Jason has got his chance. Co-incidently Darryn Lang, graded just last week, will be in control of the Flegg game prior, at 6:00pm. Meantime, another Manly Ref, Steve 'Teddy' Lyons will be in charge of the Canberra Vs. Western Suburbs First Division, at Canberra Stadium, on Sunday at 1:10pm. |

BEACON HILL CONSOLIDATE SECOND POSITION, WHILE HORNSBY UPSET CROMER
Despite scoring first, with an intercept try, Asquith failed to hold off Beacon Hill, and were comfortably beaten 40-20, in a contest for second position in the A Grade compeition, at Beacon Hill Oval Sunday (May 19 2002). Dave Lombardo was in charge of the game. At St. Matthews Farm, with Nathan Hogan at the helm, the local side, Cromer, was convincingly downed by Hornsby in an upset. Hornsby had been beaten by Narraweena, on their home ground, last week. The sides were level at 10-all at half-time. At Nolans 1 David Jay played traffic cop, with Valleys careering away from Christian Brothers, to win 68-2. Meantime in the Friday night game, with Shane Charman in the spotlight, competition leaders Belrose defeated Forestville in the local derby, 24 to 6. Forestville had led 6-4 at the break. |

TWO PLAYERS SENT OFF IN WEEKEND GAMES
Dane Pymble will be back at the Judiciary on Tuesday night, after sending off a player, for an alleged incident, in the Under 17s Harbord Vs Belrose game at Nolans 1 Sunday (May 19 2002). Luke Eisenhauer will join Dane, following a send-off in the Under 15s game, between Forestville and Asquith 1, at Forestville Oval, also on Sunday. In that game 3 players were also sin-binned. Dane Pymble made headlines last week with his first send-off of his career - three players in the one game. |

DANE PYMBLE SENDS 3 OFF, SIN-BINS 3, IN EXPLOSIVE UNDER 17s CLASH AT HARBORD PARK
Two alleged all-in brawls marred the Under 17s encounter, between Harbord and Concord Burwood, at Harbord Park Sunday (May 12 2002). Referee Dane Pymble, and touch judges Carl Pymble and Frank Samyia, were kept busy as the game gradually built into a pressure-cooker. A number of players were sin-binned, in an attempt to defuse the situation, however all hell broke loose at one stage when spectators, a reserve on the bench, and a sin-binned player allegedly ran onto the field when an all-in brawl erupted. Three players were sent off on touch judge (Carl Pymble) reports, and a number of others cautioned. An inquiry into the events surrounding the game, is likely. The game was won by Harbord 32-4. |

NARRAWEENA IN SHOCK UPSET WIN OVER HORNSBY
In the surprise result of the season, Narraweena 'A' Grade, despite trailing early, overcame all odds to go on and comfortably beat Hornsby 32-20, at Waitara Oval Sunday (May 12 2002). Shane Charman was in control of the game, which saw both sides fully extended, and the better side on the day winning. In the Coaches Challenge, all A Grade coaches, other than Narraweena's Craig Hancock, had predicted a Hornsby win. |

Jayson handled the Mona Vale-Hills Hawks A Grade encounter at Newport Oval, which was won comfortably by the local side, 46-12. The game, at 3:00PM on Sunday (May 12 2002) at Newport Oval, will be between local side Mona Vale, and Hills Hawks. Ryan Alexander and Rocky Davis will man the lines. Jayson is a member of the New South Wales Rugby League Reps Squad, and has been knocking on the door of A Grade for several weeks, in the Under 19s. Midweek he honed his skills, refereeing a police game at Redfern Oval. Congratulations Elko on your A Grade appointment, and best of luck Sunday. |

DEAL WITH NORTH SYDNEY MEANS MORE GAMES IN MANLY
In a deal hammered out last week, Manly Refs will now do all their own A Grade and A Reserve Grade games. This will mean an increase of one game in each grade per week. There will be the occasional interchanges between the associations, however these will involve Asquith Vs. Hornsby fixtures only. The deal was negotiated by Director of Referees David Jay, and President Rob Peard. |

DARREN LANG GOES TO GRADE
Congratulations to Darren Lang, who yesterday (May 6 2002) became a graded referee. The appointment caps 5 years of hard work and dedication in the Junior Reps squad, capped by his being assigned the Harold Matthews Final on Saturday ((May 4 2002). Darren was a top referee in the Group 10 competition, and in 1996 did the Group 10 First Grade Grand Final. He was invited to join the Junior Reps squad in 1997, and so began twice-weekly 7 hour round-trips to and from Mudgee to Sydney. With training on Wednesday nights at Lidcombe, refereeing in the Canterbury District, and junior reps responsibilities it soon became necessary for Darren to move, with his family to Sydney. He then joined the Manly District, and has been a top A Grade referee since. Darren is one of two referees to be graded, the other being Ben Cummins from Canberra. North Sydney referee Gerard Bailey, and Luke Bugden of Parramatta have been graded as touch judges. |

BELROSE CONTINUE THEIR WINNING STREAK, WHILE VALLEYS GO DOWN AGAIN
Belrose comfortably defeated Christian Brothers in the A Grade, Saturday night (May 4 2002) at Lionel Watts. The game, refereed by Shane Charman, finished at 30-8. Valleys meantime, at Waitara Oval on Sunday (May 5 2002) went down to Hornsby, although by just 4 points. In the centre was Dave Lombardo. Valleys have yet to score a win in 2002, missing their playmaker of recent years, Kane Mason, who has been graded to the Manly SeaEagles. In Sundays game, however, he was back in action for Valleys, on loan from the Eagles. |

The match was originally set down for Brookvale Oval, but in a late move was switched to St. Matthews Farm. David Jay had charge of the game which was played on Friday night (May 3 2002) before a big crowd. On Saturday night (May 4 2002), with Nathan Hogan at the helm, Forestville took care of Narraweena 30-12. PENRITH ARE HAROLD MATTHEWS CHAMPIONS, AFTER FINAL WIN AT KOGARAH SATURDAY
In the Final controlled by Manly's Darren Lang, on Saturday (May 4 2002), favourites Penrith easily outplayed rivals, the Newcastle Knights, to win 32-0, at Kogorah Oval. The game, before a very large crowd, saw some exceptional football from the Penrith side. Newcastle, on the other hand, suffered 'finals nerves', and squandered a lot of opportunities, particularly close to their line. Penrith led 10-0 at half-time, but scooted away in the second half, for a combined total of 6 tries, four of which were converted. |

IAN RIGBY BACK IN ACTION SUNDAY
Ian Rigby, regular A Grade referee for a number of years, who was deployed to the Arabian Gulf on board HMAS Kanimbla, midway through last season, is back in Australia, and will return to referereeing Sunday (April 14 2002). Ian's ship is one of 3 RAN ships that saw action in the Gulf over the past several months. A US Commander recently said "The Australian ships (Kanimbla, Adelaide and Sydney) significantly disrupted the smuggling operations out of Iraq, while ensuring weapons of mass destruction did not make it into Iraq".
The Kanimbla made its mark earlier this year when it intercepted and boarded a convoy of 16 craft over 10 kilometres, and found all to be carrying contraband. It was the largest single interception by a single ship since the sanctions against Iraq began.
Ian will be back in action Sunday at Forestville, and after what he's been through over the past few months, the Under 16s game between Forestville and Christian Brothers, should be a piece of cake. |

CAPTAIN OF CUSTARD TARTS FIRES IN PROTEST
The first training session at Brookvale Oval this week has ended in controversy with the Captain of the Custard Tarts, Greg Kidd, firing in a protest over the results of the team drill, and the points awarded. This is history repeating itself, as a similar controversy occurred last year, when then Lemons Skipper, Rowdy Mercer, also took on the training establishment, with similar results. In a strongly worded statement today, Greg outlined the facts as he perceived them. Trainer David Jay took a few seconds to consider the evidence, before dismissing the protest. THE SWEENY CLAN DOMINATE THE SOCIAL SCENE
In the social rounds this week, we're happy to report on the recent wedding of A Grade Special Squad member Frank Sweeny, to Carol. Carol, like David Jay, works at AMP. Frank and Carol have taken up residence in Mosman. Our Sports Desk tells us they recently took part in the City to Surf, and came in within seconds of each other. Son Ed, another Manly Ref, is one of Australia's best up-and-coming models, and appears in a double page spread on the inside cover, of the current Cleo issue, promoting Nivea. Ed featured in the same magazine in an 11 page lift-out, in the previous issue. He is also appearing on a TV campaign for KFC, in an extended season. Ed is not refereeing at present because of his commitments, and the fact that very shortly he'll be taking off for Europe. He'll be visiting Paris, London, Munich, Milan, Frankfurt and the U.S. He'll be away for the entire season. |

2002 SEASON KICKS OFF
Despite last minute juggling of competitions and games, the 2002 season got underway Saturday (April 6 2002). Pennant Hills withdrew from the A and A Reserve Grade during the week. Avalon, which had earlier pulled teams from the same competitions, will join with Pennant Hills in fielding teams in the North Sydney A Grade competition. The Manly A Grade kicked off Saturday night at Lionel Watts, with a 50-4 demolition of Asquith by Belrose.
The highlight of the A Grade was a competitive, grinding 14-10 win by Forestville over Valleys at Harbord Park on the Sunday. The win was a triumph for new Forestville coach, Chris Ryan. Other coaches making their debut on the weekend were Mick Neil of Christian Brothers, and Wayne Lambkin at Hornsby. Bob Dyer is back in charge at Valleys, whilst Jason Lussick has returned to the Beacon Hill helm. |

PETER O'DWYER LAUNCHES BROOKVALE OVAL SEMINAR
The first grade video room was packed at Brookvale Sunday (March 24 2002) for the Conference and Seminar organised by David Jay. Opening speaker was Peter O'Dwyer, CEO of the Manly Junior League, who congratulated David and Rob Peard on their initiative in putting the seminar on. Peter also paid tribute to referees in general, who he said had the hardest job in rugby league. He also noted our development of female members, and indicated the Junior League was tightening up on the judiciary. Peter said coaches would be asked to clamp down on players swearing. He said the numbers of teams in the various competitions may be down on last year, as an aging population takes its toll. Soccer and AFL are also making in-roads. He was confident however of the outlook, particularly with renewed vigour by the District Club towards junior development. He wishes all members and the Executive the best for the 2002 season, and commented that despite differences from time to time, the Junior League and the Referees Association enjoyed a first class relationship. |
