Wedding Bells Ring For David Jay

David Jay and girlfriend Donna were married Saturday (November 1 2003)at Chatswood South Uniting Church. The happily married couple are now bound for an extended honeymoon in Thailand. Congratulations David and Donna.

Bill Harrigan Announces Retirement

The National Rugby League has paid tribute to referee, Bill Harrigan, who announced that he is retiring as of today (Wednesday October 9 2003). The 43-year-old who has refereed a record 10 Grand finals, including the last seven in succession, had been appointed as referee for the second Test between Australia and Great Britain on November 15. "Bill told us today that he wanted to pursue off-field opportunities," Mr Gallop said. "It was very much his decision
and we had certainly made it clear today that our preferred option was for Bill to continue refereeing. "In this, the year of the official, he has been an outstanding example to anyone considering refereeing. "He has changed the way people referee, not only in our sport but has influenced other sports as well, through his incredible commitment to, and understanding
of the game. "To have controlled 10 Grand Finals, 22 Test Matches, 21 State of Origins (including the last 12) and 393 First Grade matches is
simply phenomenal. "Along the way Bill has been an enormous contributor to introducing professionalism to refereeing in all sports." Bill Harrigan today said that he was pursuing a range of opportunities. "This has been a
very difficult decision," he said. "I had always said that after the Grand Final that I would consider all options. "The NRL have been supportive and certainly made it clear they
were happy for me to continue. "If I was to referee the Test in England, then I would be making a commitment to go forward, and the mere fact that I'm thinking about things, suggest that this is the right time to retire. "I've been enormously proud to be a part of this game, and honoured to have achieved the things I have. "Rugby League has been a large part of my life, and refereeing has given me enormous opportunity. "I'm certainly proud of what I've achieved, but to achieve it you have to be 100 percent focussed, and I've reached a point where I want to look towards the future."

Greg Diews Ties The Knot

Congratulations are extended to Greg Diews and long-time sweetheart, Jane, who were married Friday (October 3 2003). Greg and Jane are now heading off for a honeymoon in Europe, and their ultimate destination, the Bahamas.

Manly Refs To Officiate In Manly Jersey Flegg/S.G. Ball Trials

Trials for the Manly Jersey Flegg, and SG Ball 2004 squads will be held this Saturday (September 27 2003) at Brookvale Oval. Shane Charman, Jayson Elkins, Greg Kidd, Danielle Berry, Todd Douglas, Matt Finch, Carl and Dane Pymble, Jason Fox, Dave Liuzzo Rheana Hesp, and Bevan Bourke will all take part.

David Jay Wins The Danny Stewart Trophy

Voted the member who contributed the most to the association, and a stalwart in all aspects of the running of the association, the Director of Referees David Jay was awarded the Danny Stewart Trophy for 2003, at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Night. Danny Stewart is considered the pioneer of the Manly Refs association, and was in attendance at the inaugural meeting in 1935. He is recognised as having made the most significant contribution to the associations in its' history. Barry Cross knew Danny, and said he was the person who put new referees through their ticket. He was the first Life Member of the District Club, of the Junior League and of Manly Refs, he said. Barry announced the winner of the Danny Stewart Trophy as David Jay, which again was of no surprise to anyone in attendance, other than David himself who had voted for Rob Peard. David thanked everybody in the association, particularly Rob and all of the active referees, but most all his fiance Donna for putting up with him being away all of the time doing work for the association and more so in 2003, as his scope of involvement extended to the Junior Reps squad.

Bill Grono Trophy Landed By Rob Peard

It was no suprise when Barry Cross announced the 2003 winner of the Bill Grono Trophy for the Member who contributed the Most to the Game of Rugby League as "Robbie Peard", at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Night. Before making the announcement and presentation, Barry and David Jay spoke of Bill Grono. He received his ticket in 1951, and was a graded referee from 1967 until 1980. He also spent 37 years in administration, was secretary of Manly Refs for 22 years, and was president for 15 years. He was made a Life Member in 1962, and is one of only three members to be awarded the Honour Blazer. The annual award in his honour is regarded as being for the person who has contributed the most to fostering the objectives of the association and the game of rugby league, and is somewhat of a 'clubman of the year' award. Barry Cross left no one in doubt as to what he thought of Bill Grono when he came to the microphone. "Billy Grono was my best mate", he said. And then he announced Rob as the winner. Rob, in accepting the award, spoke of his surprise at winning it, and said he holds the award in very high esteem. He said 2003 had been one of the best years in a long time, particularly with the outcome of the grand finals series, and said a lot of the credit goes to David Jay. He sincerely thanked all members for giving him the award.

Number One Referee Of The Year - Dave Lombardo

It has always been traditional that the Jim Campbell trophy for the number one referee of the year, the A Grade Grand Final referee, be presented by the previous year's winner. That wasn't possible this year because the winner in 2003 was David Lombardo, the winner of the award last year. So Mick Stone was invited to make the award. Mick said he has done a few first grade grand finals, but had never had the honour of doing an A Grade grand final. Dave Lombardo, quick off the mark, responded by saying that although he had done a number of A Grade Grand Finals, he hadn't done any NRL Grand Finals, which seemed to comfort Mick. Dave also thanked Mick for sending Phil Sigsworth off in one of the grand finals he refereed. (Dane Pymble meantime was heard murmouring about Mick NOT having sent Terry Lamb off in the 1988 grand final, after Lamb had taken Ellery Hanley out). Mick made the award to Dave who spoke of his luck in getting the A Grade appointment, particularly because of the standard of competition he had been up against, and said he felt it was a real honour, and that the year had been one of his most enjoyable in 11 years of refereeing. He also thanked David Jay for his support, particularly at the start of the season when he had an horrific work injury, which sidelined him for a number of weeks. He also thanked everyone else who had helped him, particularly touch judges, and girl friend Cassie for her support.

Frank Walsh Memorial Trophy Goes To Greg Kidd

The late Frank Walsh was remembered at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Night with his memorial trophy being presented to the most improved referee, as deemed by the Director of Referees and the advisory panel. Frank Walsh was dedicated to rugby league, and the annual presentation of the trophy is a fitting tribute to him. David Jay commented the award was a hard one to determine as the feedback on the standard of refereeing overall in the district had been particularly positive. To make the award was Tony Danks, Chairman of the NSW Referees Association, and also a Manly member. It was a good choice because Tony was on hand to see Greg Kidd, the 2003 winner, in action on Grand Final day at Brookvale Oval. "A pleasure to watch, and did a splendid, excellent job", he said, in handing over the trophy to Greg. Greg responded thanking everyone, particularly David Jay for the training and his support, and said he was particularly happy to win the award, considering the high standard of refereeing in the association.

Matt Finch Wins The Clive Rogers Trophy

It was evideent that there was an air of anticipation at the younger brigades table (Bevan Bourke, Matt Finch, Jason Fox, Dave Liuzzo etc), when they were first to assemble in the main reception room, before everybody else. Early into the night it was obvious they were going to clean up on the awards. Following Bevan Bourke's winning of the AAMI Encouragement Award, it was time for the Clive Rogers Trophy for the Best Junior Referee. To make the presentation Les Matthews, the co-ordinator for the NSW development squad, came to the stage. Before the award David Jay reminded everyone in attendance of the great work done by Clive Rogers, particularly for referees in the junior ranks. Clive ironically continued refereeing into his 60s, yet still had a lot of time for the junior referees making their way through the ranks. Les then announced the winner of Manly Ref's Best Junior Referee for 2003, and to no surprise it was Matt Finch. Finchie in accepting the award was not to be outdone by Bevan. He also made a memorable speech, again so memorable that we publish it in its entirety: "Thanks everyone".

2003 A A M I Encouragement Award Goes To Bevan Bourke

The inaugural AAMI Encouragement Award, awarded for the first time in 2003, has been won by Bevan Bourke. The award was made at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Night on Saturday night (September 20 2003) by AAMI's Anthony Dunstan. Speaking before the presentation David Jay, the Director of Referees who selects the winner, explained the award is for a referee that shows considerable potential, and demonstrates he is prepared to do whatever it takes to attain the best standard possible, including attending all of the training, and applying themselves in everything that they do. "Bevan", David said "is a very deserving winner of the inaugural award". In making the presentation Anthony told how AAMI, which has been an insurer in New South Wales since the early 1980s, is a major sponsor of sport at the national, state and community level, and particularly welcomed the tie-up with Manly Refs, because of their interest in the North Shore and northern beaches. He congratulated all in attendance, particularly the referees who gave up their time to participate in 2003, and most importantly Bevan for his contribution. Bevan responded with a well thought-out, and rehearsed speech, which was so memorable we will publish it in it's entirety: "Thanks everyone for coming and thanks".

2003 Season Winds Up With Annual Presentation and Ladies Night

The scene was Valentine's Lounge & Reception Room at Brookvale. It was the 2003 Annual Presentation and Ladies Night on Saturday (September 20 2003). Social Secretary Frank Samyia got proceedings underway with the younger brigade moving to their table first, responding to Frank's schoolmaster discipline. Others eventually were moved away from the bar, and it wasn't long before the Master of Ceremonies, David Jay, was in full gear. Firstly it was a big welcome to a large contingent of visitors from other associations, including the Central Coast, North Sydney, Parramatta, South Sydney, Balmain, Canterbury and Wests. Mick Stone, and wife Judy, from the NRL were also welcomed as special guests, along with Les Matthews, and wife Beverly. Our major sponsors had representatives on hand, with a big welcome going to Anthony and Kelly Dunstan of AAMI, and our own Rocky Davis, a director of Harbord Bowling Club. Life Members were also singled out for a special welcome. Rob Peard then came to the stage to toast the visitors, but had to leave to get a drink. Following Rob's toast an eligible bachelor from our younger ranks, Bevan Bourke, came forward to toast the ladies, for their support to members throughout the year. The Association also provided gifts to all Ladies present. Bevan did an admirable job, and it was Elizabeth Brown (wife of Philip) we believe who suggested members should do the toast on their knees. We don't wish to single out those that responded, but they were Ralph Mills, Jason Walsh and Ian Rigby. Jason, who with Frank Samyia, David Jay, and Rob Peard were the principal organisers of the night, later proposed a toast to all life members present on the night, including David Jay, David Naughton, Dennis Boyd-Skinner, Philip Brown and Barry Cross. A 3-course meal was provided which was well-received, a number of presentations were made, and into the night John Samyia, brother of Frank, was the master DJ in the main reception room, while Frank himself entertained on a grand piano in the adjoining cocktail bar. A very good night was had by everybody in attendance, the food was very good, as was the entertainment, the presentations were very professionally handled, and the dancing into the wee hours would have put Fred Astaire to shame. Jason Walsh got the 3 points for his performance on the dance floor, but was pressured by the likes of Rob Peard, Dave Lombardo, Saxon Williams, Dave Liuzzo, and Dave Jay. Half-a-game Harro also arrived on the scene (for half-the-night) and demonstrated that he has had no ill-effects from his half-time injury during the A Reserve Grade Grand Final, putting wife Jen through the hoops on the dance floor. It was great too to see Dave Naughton in attendance on the night.

Dane Pymble Back Home From England

Dane Pymble and girlfriend Kate, who have spent the last three months in England, and touring Europe, are back in our midst, and were in attendance at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Night Saturday (September 20 2003). Dane spent a lot of time in London, before embarking on a tour of Europe, which included Amsterdam, Hamburg and Geneva. Welcome home Dane (and Kate), and good to see you wearing two matching shoes Saturday night Dane.

The Old Guard Take To The Field At Brookvale Oval

With David Jay in the centre, and Rob Peard and Frank Samyia on the lines, a Manly A Grade representative side succumbed to the Central Coast-based Lakes United, at Brookvale Oval on Saturday (September 20 2003). The illustrious three, with a can of killrust on standby, oversaw Lakes United cruising to an 18-nil lead two-thirds into the game. The locals however managed to put 12 points on the board in the closing stages of the game, to go down 18-12. As alert touch judge Rob Peard saw it, Manly had won the final third 12-nil. With two advisory board members on his line, and a number of A Grade referees reportedly in the crowd, the Director of Referees (David Jay) came under particular scrutiny. He did manage a 'P' for general rulings, advantage play and the 10 metres, but was given an 'FA' for overall performance. A particular incident that caught the attention of advisory board member Peard was an occasion when a Lakes United player 10 metres from his goal-line snatched the ball from an opposing player, and dashed 90 metres to the other end to score. As Rob explains it, he was standing on the goal-line but was quick to grasp what had happened, and sprinted down the field so fast he had to slow up at the end, lest he beat the player who was about to score. He pointed out referee Jay was about 40 metres behind him, while touch judge Samyia was not in sight. David Jay however recalled the incident a little differently in that he agreed Rob was on the goal-line, but the one at the other end of the field, and it was only that he was so far behind the play (or had anticipated the change of play to come), that he was on hand for when the try was scored.

Jayson Elkins Lands Buckley Shield Grand Final

Manly Ref Jayson Elkins refereed the Buckley Shield Grand Final at Cabramatta Oval Saturday (September 13 2003). The game was played in 30 degree heat between Endeavour and Appin Sports High. Endeavour got the upper hand early and maintained the lead throuout to win 26-14. It has been a busy week for Jayson, as he also saddled up Wednesday (September 17 2003) for a police representative game between New South Wales and New South Wales Country. The game was played at Kogarah Oval as a curtain-raiser to the Police Grand Final, which was refereed by former Manly Ref Vic Rulewski.

Manly Refs Take Part In Harold Matthews

The Harold Matthews was held over the weekend (September 13/14 2003) with Danielle Berry, Shane Charman, Greg Kidd, and Jamie Mercer handling centres. All took part in touch-judging as well, along with Bevan Bourke. The games were played at Reid Park, Dapto and Parish Park, Figtree. The two-day knock-out competition involved Balmain, Manly, Newcastle, Canterbury, Cronulla, Sydney Roosters, North Sydney, Parramatta, South Sydney, St George, Canberra, Penrith, and Western Suburbs, together with representative teams from Illawarra, Group 7, Maitland, Central Coast, Group 18, Group 2, and Victoria,

Thoughts With Shane Charman

The thoughts of all members this week are with Shane Charman and his family, after the tragic death of Shane's sister Natasha on Monday night (September 8 2003). All the best Shano.

Matt Finch, Rheana Hesp, Carl Pymble And Bevan Bourke To Officiate At Ken Irvine Shield

Matt Finch has been appointed to referee the Ken Irvine Under 15s Shield at North Sydney Oval on Sunday (September 7 2003) at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Bevan Bourke has been appointed to one of the lines, with the other to be handled by a North Sydney touch judge. In the Under 12s in the Shield at 12:30pm, Rheana Hesp will officiate, with Finchie on one line, and a North Sydney touch judge on the other. Carl Pymble has landed the Under 10s at 10:30am, with Rheana on one line, and a North Sydney touchie on the other.

Tradition Returns To Long Reef As The Main Game Plays Out

The Manly Refs were in full swing at Long Reef Golf Course Monday (August 25 2003), for the traditional Mad Monday. A 7am start was the first challenge, which was admirably met by all. David Jay then distributed hot pies from the nearby bakery, before those cunning enough to book carts ahead, drove off into the sunrise. Those without carts started on their 18-hole trek. The sun shone, and despite a strong wind, the conditions were perfect. Twenty members participated in a great day's golf, before adjourning to the Harbord Bowling Club for a BBQ, organised by Barry Cross. Then into the afternoon it was a bowls tournament, which riveted most members attention-span. By the close of proceedings many great games had been played (mostly in members minds), many holes-in-one had been nearly sunk, along with a few drinks, a lot of yarns had been spun (some true), and a good day was had by all.

Belrose Win Back-To-Back A Grade Grand Finals

Belrose, in a comprehensive display, played their way into history Sunday (August 24 2003), defeating Hornsby 32-6 at Brookvale Oval. It was a day during which winds of up to 140kmh wreaked havoc across Sydney, with reports reaching the ground that one man had been killed by a falling tree, and at neighbouring Curl Curl, two swimmers were missing, after being swept out to sea in a rip. At Brookvale powerful winds directed play on several occasions, with a number of kicks going into touch on the full, players having difficulty
setting up kicks for goal, and balls changing direction in mid-air. The conditions didn't deter Belrose however, with the side swooping to a 16-6 half-time score. Earlier Hornsby looked set to further an early lead when one of their flankers darted over the line, and looked set to comfortably score a try, but a mishap in the act of scoring, saw him slide over the dead ball line. A minute later Belrose scored at the other end, and converted, and Hornsby were left, rather than having consolidated their lead, having lost it. Belrose repeated their first half score, and Hornsby failed to add to theirs, and the result ended up 32-6. Dave Lombardo was in charge, his consecutive A Grade Grand Final in Manly. On his lines were Saxon Williams and Greg Diews, and in-goal judges were Todd Douglas and Frank Samyia. Belrose made history Sunday, being the first Manly club to win A Grade Grand Finals in both the Manly and North Sydney districts. (At North Sydney Oval Belrose defeated another local Manly side, Narrabeen). The A Reserve Grade was probably the best game of the day, with Valleys taking an early lead with a converted try, and leading 10-6 at the break. There was drama in the referees dressing room at half-time, as referee Paul Harrigan succumbed to a badly torn ligament ankle injury. Rocky Davis took the field in the second half, to complete the game. Two tries late in the game eventually gave Narraweena the edge, taking the minor-premiers to a well-deserved premiership win. Touch judges were Ralph Mills and John McEvoy, with Scott Burdon and Danielle Berry patrolling the in-goal. The Under 19s Grand Final, refereed by Shane Charman, with Scott Burdon and Frank Samyia on the lines, and Ralph Mills and Danielle Berry in-goal, looked like being a run-a-way with Paddington leading Narrabeen 16-0 at half-time. Narrabeen duplicated the 16 points in the second half, however Paddington added another 8 points, to comfortably win the game 26-16. The Under 17s Grand Final, with Greg Kidd in the middle, Todd Douglas and Danielle Berry on the lines, and Matt Finch and Carl Pymble in-goal, saw North Curl Curl defeat Christian Brothers 44-14. Jayson Elkins was in control of the Under 16s Grand Final, with Matt Finch and Carl Pymble in support, and Bevan Bourke and Rheana Hesp in the in-goal area. North Curl Curl easily overcame Christian Brothers to win the game 64-4. Proceedings at Brookvale Oval kicked off at 8.15am, with Rowdy Mercer officiating in the Under 15s Grand Final with Narraweena winning over Manly Cove 46-18. Rheana Hesp and Bevan Bourke were on the lines, and Dave Liuzzo and Carl Pymble looked after the in-goal.

Manly Cove Win Under 14/1s Junior League Grand Final

In their first Grand Final win on Brookvale Oval in 19 years, the Manly Cove Under 14/1s out-played a valiant Narrabeen side to win 18-6. Narrabeen led early 6-4, but the favourites Manly Cove snuck a try in just before half-time, to lead 8-6 at the break. In the second half Cove crept away, but the score had little bearing on the closeness of the sides. Danielle Berry was in command in the centre, with Rowdy Mercer and Frank Samyia on the lines. For Manly Cove victory was sweet as the club had 5 teams taking part in Grand Finals but victory eluded them until this, the last game of the day. Over at Lionel Watts, in the match of the day at that ground, Matt Finch was in charge of the Under 14/2s Grand Final, with Bevan Bourke and Jayson Elkins in support. Christian Brothers got the better of Pennant Hills early, and remained in control for the rest of the game. In the Under 13s Grand Final Rheana Hesp was in the centre, flanked by Rowdy Mercer and Frank Samyia. In this game Belrose defeated Cromer. In the Under 12/1s Carl Pymble oversaw Belrose getting the better of Manly Cove, which had been undefeated until the Grand Final. In the Under 12/2s Grand Final Bevan Bourke refereed, while Dave Liuzzo and Jayson Elkins were the touch judges. The game between Harbord and Narrabeen was won by Harbord. The Under 11/1s Grand Final between an undefeated Manly Cove and Cromer was won by Cromer. The 'Cove side was overawed early to get behind 24-0, but made up considerable ground to bridge the gap to 24-17 by the finish. A quick-thinking Jason Fox, who refereed the game, awarded a penalty try during proceedings. Jason's back-up was in the form of Rheana Hesp and Rob Peard. Dave Liuzzo was in charge of the Under 11/2s Grand Final, won by Cromer over Avalon, while the Under 10/1s Grand Final saw Carl Pymble in charge, with Paul Bryant and Rocky Davis on the lines. The Under 10/1s saw Belrose take care of Narrabeen. The Under 10/2s Grand Final had Paul Tonga in the centre, and Dave Liuzzo and Matt Finch in support. The game between Mona Vale and Christian Brothers resulted in a win to the Raiders (Mona Vale). The Under 9/1s Grand Final was refereed by Paul Bryant, with Phil Brown and Greg Diews on the flanks. In that game Mona Vale won over Manly Cove. The 9/2s Grand Final was in the hands of Fred Markezic, ably supported by Paul Tonga and Shane Charman, and resulted in a win to Cromer over Avalon. Addie Flippance oversaw (not overheard) a win to Christian Brothers over Manly Cove in the Under 8/1s Grand Final. Phil Brown and Greg Diews again did the honours on the lines. In the 8/2s Grand Final Dennis Boyd-Skinner was in the centre, perhaps for his final Brookvale Oval and Grand Finals appearance, with Jason Fox and Rocky Davis touch-judges. Belrose won this game over Narraweena. In the Under 7/1s Grand Final Philip Brown was in action in the centre, with Addie Flippance and Greg Diews on the lines. A run-away to Mona Vale resulted, although Harbord scored a very good try late in the second half. The Under 7/2s Grand Final, refereed by Dennis Boyd-Skinner with Jason Fox and Rocky Davis in support, which started the day's proceedings, was a thriller to the end, with both sides bombing tries in the closing minutes, before a last minute try by Narraweena saw them clinch victory.

Grand Final Day Arrives At Last

In the early hours of Saturday morning (August 23 2003), at Brookvale Oval, two video crews were setting up operations, the crowd starting to build about 7.30am as parents began arriving with players, makeshift mini-fields were being set up, and officials, and teams began to assemble for the day's schedule of Junior Rugby League Grand Finals. Shortly before 8am the two dressing rooms were bustling with 6 and 7 year old players, and referees and touch judges were warming up, and stretching. Just before 8.15am Dennis Boyd-Skinner, in what could be his final appearance at Brookvale Oval, after two decades of refereeing, would blow his whistle to signal the start of the Under 7/2s Grand Final, and seconds later, he would be followed by Philip Brown, a seasoned campaigner, who would be about to officiate in the Under 7/1s Grand Final. Over at Lionel Watts, a little later in the morning, a similar scene was taking place. Grounds were being prepared, the canteen fully -stocked was being set-up for an expected busy day's trade. A separate video crew was preparing to record the day's games. Fred Markezic just before 9.45am would blow his whistle to launch proceedings with the Under 9/2s Grand Final there. In all 5 grand finals would be played out at Lionel Watts, and 10 at Brookvale Oval. Later, as Danielle Berry would blow her whistle around 4.45pm at Brookvale Oval to end the Under 14/1s Grand Final, 13 referees would have taken part, and 18 touch-judges, some doubling up, in the officiating of the 15 Grand Finals to be played. Excitement would unfold with a penalty try being awarded in one game, Manly Cove particpating in five Grand Finals, with two of their teams undefeated all year. Cromer club would have four teams taking part, and Christian Brothers, Mona Vale, and Narrabeen three. Crowds would build, and fluctuate throughout the day, with big numbers in attendance at both grounds, great football being played, and no controversies. Reports on the refereeing from both grounds would indicate that all on the day would have performed admirably. Congratulations would go to all concerned, on a great day of rugby league in the district.

Association Tips Hat To Dennis Boyd-Skinner

Tribute was paid this week at the General Meeting to Dennis Boyd-Skinner, who will retire to the South Coast in the next two weeks. Dennis has been a stalwart of the association for more than two decades, and will be sadly missed. As a tribute he will kick off this weekend's round of grand finals, by refereeing the opening game at 8.15am at Brookvale Oval, on Saturday (August 23 2003) (the Under 7/2s Grand Final between Narraweena and Beacon Hill). Dennis will also back up at 9.05am with the Under 8/2s Grand Final between Narraweena and Belrose. He will of course be in action for Monday's game too (golf). From all of us Dennis, thanks for everything you've done for us, and best of luck in your well earned retirement.

Dave Lombardo, Shane Charman Head Up Grand Final Appointments

Dave Lombardo, for the second year in a row, has been appointed referee of the A Grade Grand Final, to be held this Sunday (August 24 2003) at Brookvale Oval. The game will be between Belrose and Hornsby. It will be the first grand final appearance in the Manly district for Hornsby , the oldest rugby league club on the north shore. Shane Charman has again been appointed to the Under 19s Grand Final, at 12.20pm between Narrabeen and Paddington. Veteran Paul Harradine will be in the centre of the A Reserve Grade between Valleys, and minor-premiers Narraweena at 1.40pm. The Under 17s Grand Final, between North Curl Curl and Christian Brothers at 11am, has gone to Greg Kidd, while Jayson Elkins will handle the Under 16s Grand Final between North Curl Curl and Christian Brothers at 9.45am. The first game of the day Sunday will be the Under 15s Grand Final, between Narraweena and Manly Cove at 8.30am, for which Rowdy Mercer is to be the referee. Also at Brookvale Oval on the Saturday (August 23 2003), Danielle Berry heads the appointments with the Under 14/1s Grand Final between Manly Cove and Narrabeen at 3.30pm. Rheana Hesp has charge of the Under 13/1s at 2.20pm between Cromer and Belrose, while Carl Pymble will control both the Under 12/1s at 1.10pm, between Manly Cove and Belrose, and the Under 10/1s, between Belrose and Narrabeen at 11.10am. In-between it will be Jason Fox in charge of the Under 11/1s Grand Final between Manly Cove and Cromer. That Grand Final is at 12.10pm. At 10.10am it will be the Under 9/1s Grand Final with Paul Bryant at the helm. The game is between Manly Cove and Mona Vale. The 8/1s will be refereed by Addie Flippance at 9.05am. The game is between Manly Cove and Christian Brothers. The 8/2s Grand Final will be refereed by Dennis Boy-Skinner at 9.05am between Narraweena and Belrose. Dennis will also be in control of the Under 7/2s between Narraweena and Beacon Hill at 8.15am. Philip Brown of course will take charge of the Under 7/1s at 8.15am also, between Mona Vale and Harbord. At Lionel Watts the match of the day will be centered by Matt Finch. It's the Under 14/2s Grand Final between Christian Brothers and Pennant Hills. The game is scheduled to start at 2pm. Preceding that game, at 1pm will be the Under 12/2s Grand Final between Harbord and Narrabeen, to be controlled by Bevan Bourke. Paul Tonga has the Under 10/s Grand Final between Mona Vale and Christian Brothers, at 12pm. Dave Liuzzo will take charge of his first Grand Final at 10.45am, the Under 11/2s between Cromer and Avalon. Fred Markezic will control the Under 9/2s Grand Final at 9.45am between Cromer and Avalon.

Steve McDonald Dies, Aged 19

The news of the tragic death of Steve McDonald, a younger member who refereed from July 1998 to the end of 2001, was relayed to members at Tuesday (August 19 2003) night's general meeting, and a minute's silence was held. Steve, who refereed the 2001 Under 11s grand final, won by Manly Cove over Narrabeen, collapsed and died while playing baseball on Sunday (August 17 2003). He was 19. Steve's funeral will be held this Thursday (August 21 2003) at St. Johns in Avalon.

Belrose Down Beacon Hill In The A Grade Final 29-6

Twenty minutes into Sunday's (August 17 2003) A Grade Final, controlled by Dave Lombardo, Belrose led 20-0. Two minutes later from a penalty they added another 2 points. Six minutes later, from another penalty, they added another two points, and led 24-0. Then just before half-time Beacon Hill scored a try, which they converted, and at half-time the score was 24-6. Twenty minutes into the second half a Belrose player was sin-binned, and seven minutes later Belrose kicked a field goal to take the score to 25-6. Five minutes from the end a Beacon Hill player was sent from the field. One minute later another player was sent, on a touch judge's report. Four minutes later a Beacon Hil player was sin-binned, and in the closing seconds Belrose scored a try, which wasn't converted, and the final score was 29-6. In the Reserve Grade, with Paul Harradine in charge, Narraweena had to fight off a fast-finishing Beacon Hill side to win 18-16. They had led 18-6 earlier, but two Beacon Hill tries, one just seconds before full time narrowed the gap. The attempt at conversion of their last try would have put the game into extra time, but it wasn't to be. In the Under 19s Narrabeen, which had led 6-0 at half-time, eventually won the game 7-6, in the closest finish of the day. Shane Charman was at the helm. In the Under 17s, refereed by Greg Kidd, Christian Brothers defeated Belrose 24-12, and in the Under 16s, with Jayson Elkins in the centre, Christian Brothers downed Forestville 22-16. In the Under 15s, with Rowdy Mercer out front, Manly Cove beat Christian Brothers 26-12.

Season Training Ends With Olympics Night At Brookvale Oval

The annual Olympics, a ritual in the training schedule took place Wednesday night (August 13 2003)at Brookvale Oval. The Libs were so confident they rested a number of their stars, while the Commies pulled out every stop. The night was marred by controversy from the outset as the Marathon ended in a virtual tie, with the judges having to make a call. The Libs had led throughout and Ralph Mills, the last runner, battled in the straight to stave off a fast-finishing Danielle Berry. Judges first awarded the event to the Libs, but an inquest later, which took evidence from the two runners, overturned the decision and awarded the event to the Commies. The Kick-Tennis also went to the Commies, and it was left to the Sprints for the Libs to register their first points. The Agility Drill was a hotly contested event between rival captains Shane and Rowdy. Shane for the Libs
got the nod, despite a protest which was instantly dismissed. The Commies then pulled a Wildcard on the Soccer, expecting their star Leb to upset the Libs. Dave Lombardo however was well-contained, and it was Elk for the Libs who scored the only goal to pinch victory. The Commies did make it in the Touch, and wielded a
successful Wildcard. The closing ceremony was abandoned due to a late shower (of rain) and proceedings were adjourned to the nearest pub.

Beacon Hill Down Cromer In Minor Semi Final

After defeating Narraweena and Valleys in two play-offs, Cromer Tuesday night (August 12 2003) went up against Beacon Hill in the A Grade Minor Semi Final. Fifteen minutes into the game Beacon Hill had a converted try on the board, and approaching half-time were leading 10-0. Just before half-time a Beacon Hill player was sent off on a high tackle charge, however even against 12 men the Kingfishers found the going tough, playing their fourth game in 9 days. Beacon Hill tacked on another two tries in the second half to win 18-0. The side will now go on to play Belrose in the Final.

Vale Valleys, Sudden Death For Beacon Hill, Cromer

Valleys A Grade bid farewell to the 2003 season in a spirited, tight game at Lionel Watts Sunday (August 10 2003) narrowly going down to Cromer 18-14. Cromer led throughout, winning the chance to meet Beacon Hill in the Minor Semi Final, to be played at Brookvale Oval at 7pm Tuesday night (August 12 2003). In the Major Semi Hornsby defeated Belrose 19-14 at Forestville Oval. Belrose led 8-0 at halftime, but were overhauled in the second half. In the Reggies, in the Minor Semi Beacon Hill defeated Cromer in a tight game 20-18, while Valleys overcame a determined Narraweena 22-6 in the Major Semi. In the Under 19s Narrabeen beat South eastern, and Paddington won over Valleys.

Active Referees Asked To Dress For The Occasion For Finals Series

All referees are requested to dress appropriately before arriving at grounds to officiate over the finals series. Association-provided shirts, or the new polo shirts, with both sponsors name featured, should be worn where possible. Only a limited number of polo shirts have been distributed so far. Jayson Elkins will be visiting as many grounds as possible on Saturday (August 9 2003) and Sunday (August 10 2003) to ensure all referees have them. Elk also advises black caps, with sponsors names, will be available from next weekend.

Cromer Pip Narraweena On The Bell In First Of A Grade Play-Offs

Cromer had to work overtime to overcome a determined Narraweena side, in the first game of a 3-way play-off Tuesday night (August 5 2003) at Forestville Oval. Cromer looked to have the game comfortably in hand, having led 14-0 twenty minutes into the game. At half time the Kingfishers were ahead 14-6, then 15 minutes into the second half Narraweena scored, and converted. A penalty goal 10 minutes from the end, from 40 metres out, saw the sides level-pegging for the closing minutes of the game. Then with about 10 seconds remaining on the clock Cromer kicked a field goal, to clinch the game 15-14. In the curtain-raiser, Northern Districts similarly got away early in the Under 19s play-off to lead 26-8. A fightback by Mascot though had the two sides matching it in the second half, with Northern Districts finally getting the upper hand, mainly through superior goal-kicking, to win 26-18. A big crowd was in attendance for the two games, despite blustery conditions, and a large contingent of Manly refs turned out in support of those officiating.

This Tuesday Night's Training Cancelled

In view of the fact that there are playoffs tonight (Tuesday August 5 2003) at Ferretville, which will involve a large number of our members, training has been cancelled for
this week. Members not taking part are urged to turn up at Ferretville to support fellow referees involved in the games.

Weekend Results Force Three Way Play Off In A Grade

The results in three of the four A Grade games on the weekend (August 2/3 2003) have forced a three-way play off for the finals. Cromer and Narraweena will meet in the first game, with the winner to face Valleys. The first game is likely to take place on Tuesday night (August 5 2003), and the second game on Friday night (August 8 2003). The Junior League will finalise play-off dates and times on Monday night (August 4 2003).

Hornsby Just Holds Off Fast Finishing Cromer

On Sunday (August 3 2003) Hornsby defeated Cromer, in the tightest of finishes at Waitara Oval. After leading 26-10 the local side looked home and hose, before Cromer mounted a sensational fight-back. In the end the visitors were just clipped 30-28. In another crucial game at Lionel Watts Belrose defeated Narraweena 26-12, while at Storey Park Valleys overcame all odds to just overcome the Magpies 19-14. In the reggies Narraweena, undefeated for the entire season, went down to Belrose, Asquith defeated Valleys, and Cromer were victors over Hornsby.

Emotional Scenes At Storey Park As Valleys Re-Group

Supporters of Valleys turned out in droves Sunday (August 3 2003) in tribute to Kane Mason, and in support of the A Grade in the side's first game since their captain's tragic death last weekend. Players of the two top grades, and supporters arrived at Storey Park in black shirts all numbered 'seven', with the Valleys logo and the name 'Mason' on the front. Prior to both games a minute's silence was held, with Valleys players moving in to a huddle in support of each other. After Asquith just won the A Reserve Grade, the main game got underway, with the Valleys number seven jumper missing from their line-up. Asquith led 8-4 at half-time, and in fact for most of the game. Then in the last 15 minutes, with huge support from the crowd, the Valleys side edged their way to the lead. With the help of a field goal the side went on to win 19-14, in a hard fought, tight and physical game. At the end of it the large crowd applauded both sides. Players stayed on the field for several minutes after, then the Asquith side formed a guard of honour and clapped the Valleys side from the field. The referee and touch judges, and the crowd too applauded as the team left the field. Valleys then formed a guard of honour and clapped Asquith from the field. It was a fitting finale, and a great support to the grieving Valleys side and club, in the process of dealing with their loss.

Beacon Hill Down Forestville In Saturday Night Game

Beacon Hill accounted for Forestville 44-0 Saturday night (August 2 2003), although the score doesn't fully reflect the competitiveness of the game. Forestville's side consisted of five fresh A grade players, with the balance made up of A Reserve Grade players who had played the game before. The score was 16-0 with 15 minutes to go, with Beacon Hill putting on a number of tries in the closing minutes. The A Reserve Grade game was shortened because of the lack of Forestville's playing strength, with Beacon Hill winning 32-10.

Vale Kane Mason - As Told By Frank Ponissi

It was early 1996 in my new position at Manly as Junior Development Co-ordinator when I got a tip from an old NSWRL Academy contact in Bathurst about this little halfback from Dubbo selected in the Western Division Under 17s – “small but can play”. I sent John Reid down to Wagga to watch a few games and asked him to keep an eye on the Western Division halfback. He came back with – “small but can really play”. A few weeks later I went up to Newcastle to watch the Final of the Country Under 17s and watched this little halfback star in a beaten team against Northern Rivers led by Todd Eadie.

I had seen enough and was convinced of his ability but the next step was to check his character. I knew the Western Division Coach – Steve Hall very well as I worked with Steve at the Academy for the previous six years and no better gentleman will you ever meet in life. I asked Steve what type of kid he was. Steve replied that the kid went out with his daughter and that he lived with them. That was enough for me!

The final step was to get the ok from Frank Stanton and Bob Fulton. Armed with a highlights video I went into Cranky’s office and their first words were “shit he’s small”. However, the more they watched the more impressed they became. Bozo being Bozo rang a mate from the bush about the kid while we were watching the video and before the video had finished he said, ”sign him” and walked out. So that is how Kane Mason became a Sea Eagle! I clearly remember sending the scholarship agreement to Kane in Dubbo and it came back signed quicker than any other I can ever remember. He received the envelope, opened it, signed it and put it straight back into the post.

Kane arrived to Manly in early January 1997 with another Western Division player – the very likeable Calvin Baxter. We found a great place for them at Curl Curl. The owner of the house lived downstairs and lets say we had a few early problems!! Cooking, cleaning, shopping, paying bills, noise control, etc were all very new to our boys from the bush and I think in January 1997 I spent more time at that house at Curly than I did at my own. But eventually she became quite fond of the boys after they had settled into life in Sydney. Kane was very loyal to his mate, sometimes too loyal. Calvin had a habit of sometimes not turning up for things like work or training. The amount of times Kane either covered for, went looking for, or ‘made up stories for’ Calvin always ended up in Kane getting into strife! But all very harmless!

Kane was employed in February as a sports trainee and placed at the Manly Football Club for 12 months. Zorba quickly took him under his wing after he found out that Kane played golf at a very low handicap and nicknamed him “Goodooga” after his place of birth. As well as winning money for Zorba on the golf course with sponsors, Kane basically did everything at the office helping in every department possible.

But it was one duty especially that he will be best remembered for. The girls in their wisdom decided to relieve Ann Doubleday at reception during her lunch break with Kane. When people rang up expecting to hear “good afternoon welcome to the Pepsi Sea Eagles”, they got a very blunt “hello”. When the startled customer would say, “Is that the Manly Football Club?” Kane would reply with “yeh!”. As well as his phone manner being somewhat unconventional, Kane also knew nothing about screening calls and it all came to a head when a furious Frank Stanton steamed out of his office and demanded who was letting all these irate fans through to his phone complaining about everything from ticket prices to the selection of players. After copping a blast from the CEO not to let anyone through, Kane quickly copped the tip.
The next phone call was from Neil Whittaker – then ARL General Manager. The telephone conversation went something like this;
“Hello”
“Is that the Manly Football Club?’
“ Yeh”
“Its Neil Whittaker here. Can I speak to Frank Stanton please?”
“Nah, you can’t! Bye”
And with that he hung up on Neil Whittaker.

After intense training Kane improved in this area and he was a very valued and important member of staff – but we did have some interesting moments that would end up with little talks in my office! But he was extremely popular with all staff, very enthusiastic and an absolute delight to have in the office.

Of course playing footy was the reason Kane was at Manly and he settled straight into training loving every minute of it. His first team was in the SG Ball squad coached by the David Hosking. From day one Kane and the Mule hit it off very well and developed a great rapport. Kane‘s first official competition match with Manly was at Brookvale Oval against North Sydney. Kane was on fire in the first half destroying the Bears with his running and kicking and playing a big part of the half time 20 nil lead. Unfortunately the Bears won 22-20 and Kane soon realised he was in the big smoke when he copped a “Mule spray” after some ordinary decisions in the second half. But Kane was a mentally tough little bloke who handled that in his stride that spoke volumes of his character and respect for his coach.

Kane continued to entertain us with his skill on Saturday afternoons especially at Brookie where he seemed to save his best with some dazzling performances. I know Wokka could probably recall every try he scored or set up that season but I don’t have such a memory. But he loved the whole thing and the day he was brought up to the Under 20s early that season was a highlight for him. The grade teams were playing the Crushers at Lang Park and Kane was brought up to sit on the bench. I never forget the moment he got the call from Charlie Haggett to come on – he was busting with excitement. Kane finished the season with the Ball and we didn’t put too much pressure on him that first season but the signs were good of a good player coming through the ranks.

A memorable night was his first Junior Rep Presentation night when he proudly brought his parents from Goodooga. Kane won an award that night and to have his parents there was very special for him. It was also a very special night for me because at the end of the night in a corner away from everyone else Kane and his parents (and Calvin) presented me with a genuine didgeridoo as a token of their appreciation. I was very touched by the thought but also very respectful of receiving such a gift. I was also given some didgeridoo playing lessons – which was made a lot easier after a few beers. From that night the didgeridoo took pride of place next to my bar at home at Collaroy.

Kane played Jersey Flegg the following year and again played well but at the end of the season a grade was cut and big decisions needed to be made on a lot of players in the Club. Whilst I loved my job, there was one duty I hated with a passion – telling players that they were not wanted the following season. The disappointment on their faces was a not nice thing. The day I had to tell Kane this news was nerve wrecking, as I knew how desperately he wanted to play 1st grade for Manly. He was shattered! Players handle the news differently. A lot of players hold grudges. Not Kane. Whilst not happy with the decision he treated me the same and did so until I last saw him 12 months ago. A smile and hello every time he saw me. Nothing changed. And even more impressive was how he stayed in the area and settled very much into a life on the peninsula. He signed up for the Valley – very much to my delight but I can’t take credit for that. I think the Mule was instrumental in that one. Over the last few years he has been by far the most dominant player in the A Grade competition and a real crowd favourite at Harbord Park. He never gave up hope of playing for Manly again. During his highly successful career at the Valley, Kane had a short spell in France where he was very popular. Naturally I quizzed him when the possibility of me living in France first came up.

Kane never did play 1st Grade for Manly as we all had hoped when we signed him. Quite a number of other players from that generation of Junior Rep players did play in the top grade. But getting Kane to Manly was a successful investment for both the club and the district. He was very, very popular with all his teammates at both Manly and at the Valley, and represented both clubs with distinction - “Small in stature but big in heart. And could really play”.

Kane, we will miss you all very much. The day I return back to Australia to live the first thing I will be getting out of storage is that didgeridoo. It will again take place of pride next to my bar and every time I look at it I will think of our little mate from Goodooga!

Beacon Hill Just Edge Out Narraweena to Win 26-22

In the match of the split-round at Beverly Job Sunday (July 27 2003), Beacon Hill had to work hard to beat a determined Narraweena side, with the two sharing the lead for most of the game. Five tries were scored by each side, with the difference coming down to the goal-kicking. In the only other game of the round, Belrose defeated Asquith 50-14 at Storey Park. In both games all players, referees and touch judges wore black arm-bands, and a minute's silence was held in memory of Kane Mason, who died tragically on Saturday. In the A Reserve grade games, Narraweena retained its undefeated status, and Belrose accounted for Asquith.

Manly Rugby League Stunned By Tragic Death Of Valleys A Grade Captain

The Manly rugby league world is in mourning Sunday (July 27 2003), following the tragic death of Kane Mason on Saturday. Kane was shot dead around 1.40am after a night on the town at Macksville, south of Coffs Harbour. He was spending the weekend away because of the split-round, which Valleys played last weekend. He was in Macksville, the hometown of team mate and flatmate Darren Ward. The two left for the north coast town after training on Thursday night. Darren was also shot, and is in critical condition. He was shot in the face, and according to news reports, is expected to lose an eye. A 17 and a 19 year old youth, and a 15 year old have been arrested and charged. The two older youths have been charged with one count of murder, and the 15 year old with being an accessory. Kane Mason came to Manly from the north-west New South Wales town of Goodooga as a junior, scouted by Frank Ponissi. He played for Manly in the premier league last year, and this season was back in charge of the Valleys A Grade. He became engaged last weekend.

Meeting This Tuesday Night At 6.30pm, Refreshments To Follow

The usual general meeting will be held at Harbord Bowling Club this Tuesday night (July 8 2003) at 6:30pm. Pizzas, garlic bread and chicken wings

There will be no training in lieu of the meeting. For those who have not handed their uniforms to Rob Peard for the application of the AAMI patches, Tuesday night's meeting is your last chance.

Skelly To Return To England

Manly Refs is soon to lose Andrew Skelton, for the second time, as he returns home to the Motherland. Skelly, who holds Australian and British passports, returned from England last year after spending several years abroad. He was with Manly Refs prior to going overseas. Skelly has been a regular at training, games, and social gatherings and will be sorely missed. Nonetheless we wish him well on his travels, wherever they may take him, and hope to see him back again in Manly some time in the future. Best of luck, Skelly!

Weekend Of Upsets, Send-Offs, Sin-Bins And A Broken Record

In the biggest upset of the weekend Narraweena put pay to Valleys in the A Grade at Beverly Job to win 30-22 Sunday (June 29 2003). Belrose also surprised at Lionel Watts, not so much with a win over Cromer, but the score of 54-0. At Forestville Oval, in a fiery game which resulted in two send-offs and a sin bin by referee Jayson Elkins, Asquith 32 beat Forestville 14. At Beacon Hill Oval where the Beacon Hill captain-coach was sin-binned by referee Shayne Charman, the local team overcame a spirited Hornsby side, which had led 18-6 at half-time, to lead 24-22 with seconds to go. Then on the final bell Beacon Hill scored a try to win the game 28-22. In the A Reserve Grade Beacon Hill, Asquith, Cromer and Narraweena were the winners. In the Narraweena/Valleys game referee Paul Harradine sent one player off, and sin-binned 3 others. For Narraweena it was the first time ever they had defeated Valleys in both grades.

Valleys Overwhelm Beacon Hill With 12 Men

Despite having a player sent off in the first five minutes, Valleys A Grade were too strong for Beacon Hill, at Harbord Park Sunday (June 22 2003). Valleys led 8-0 early, before Beacon Hill scored a try, which after the conversion had the teams at 8-6. With a penalty goal before half-time, Valleys led 10-6. In the second half the local side careered away, to win 25-6. The odd point in the scoreline was due to an early field goal by Valleys, "to avoid another draw", said half-back Kane Mason. Valleys have been involved in four draws this year, including last week's 24-all draw with competition leaders Hornsby. In other games Hornsby went down in a major upset at Waitara Park, losing 36-12 to Belrose. Cromer 36 were too strong for Forestville 14 at St Matthews Farm, and Narraweena easily defeated Asquith 34-14 at Storey Park. In the A Reserve Grade the 'away' sides Forestville, Beacon Hill, Belrose and Narraweena, won all games.

Manly A Grade Representative Team Comfortably Accounts For St George

In the A Grade representative game at Brookvale Oval last Night (Wednesday June 18 2003) the combined Manly A Grade team defeated St George 38-18. The game, refereed by Manly's Shane Charman, was very much one-sided by half time, with the locals ahead 38-8. St. George edged their way into the game to win the second half 10-0, but still went away 38-18 in debt. In the Under 13s curtain-raiser, with Danielle Berry, again from Manly, in charge, St George were far too strong for the local Manly team, winning 78-6.

Shane Charman Appointed To Manly Vs St George Representative A Grade Game, Danielle Berry To Under 13s

Shane Charman will centre the Manly Warringah Versus St George A Grade representative teams fixture at Brookvale Oval, this Wednesday night (June 18 2003). The game is set down for 7.15pm. Rowdy Mercer and Greg Kidd will assist on the lines. In a curtain-raiser to the A Grade, Danielle Berry will referee the Manly Warringah Versus St George Under 13s representative teams game, to start at 6pm. Rheanna Hesp and Bevan Bourke have been appointed the touch judges.

Valleys Draw With Hornsby 24-all

Valleys have done it again, after three draws already this year, they've come away from Waitara Oval with another one-pointer. In a thriller, the local side shot away early, and at one point comfortably led 16-4. Valleys however responded midway through the first half, and by half time either side could have gone on and won. Both sides had their opportunities, and at the closing bell they were drawn 24-all. In another cliff-hanger at Beverly Job, Narraweena edged out Cromer to win 18-16, while Beacon Hill had an easy win over Asquith 32-10 at Becaon Hill Oval. In The Reserve Grade the winners were Asquith, Valleys, Narraweena and Belrose.

6s Blitz As Paraskevidekatriaphobia Hits Forestville

It was Friday the 13th as the 13 members of the Forestville side lined up against Belrose at Lionel Watts on Friday night (13 June 2003). Paraskevidekatriaphobia (fear of Friday the 13th) must have hit the Ferrets hard as the resultant scoreline was 66-6 to Belrose. For history buffs we can report that both Friday and 13 have major taboos, and when combined they're lethal. Friday was the day of the Crucifixion. It's said Friday was the day Eve tempted Adam with an apple. The Great Flood started on a Friday, and in ancient Rome Friday was Execution Day. Legend has it, if 13 people sit down to dinner together, all will die within the year. Many buildings don't have a 13th floor. There were 13 disciples at the Last Supper. If you have 13 letters in your name, you will invoke the devil's luck on others (Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Osama bin Laden, and Friday night's referee David Lombardo, all have 13 letters in their names).

Happy 40th Birthday David Jay

Director of Referees Dave Jay is celebrating his 40th birthday this week. Dave officially turned 40 on Thursday (June 12 2003). He recently got engaged to long-time partner Donna, and the two are looking forward to wedding bells in November this year. It's been a busy year for David, who is now on the NSWRL Advisory Board, and is involved in coaching with the NSW body and the ARL. He has also lent assistance to the NSW Country Rugby League Referees Association. Congratulations Dave on the big one, and have a great week.

Valleys And Belrose In 16-all Draw, Hornsby Upset Asquith 50th Anniversary Celebrations

At Harbord Park Sunday the quickly-improving Valleys went head to head with Belrose, with the two local sides tying at the finish, 16-all. Both sides attempted field goals in the closing seconds, but were unsuccessful. In other games, Beacon Hill put pay to Cromer with a crushing 40 to 12 win, and on the Saturday night at Forstville Oval, in Jamie Mercer's first A Grade game, Narraweena had to fight off a determined finish by Forestville, to win the game 28 to 24. In the other A Grade fixture, it was the North Sydney derby with Asquith, on their 50th anniversay, playing Hornsby at Storey Park. The anniversary celebrations were upset though with Hornsby winning, in a tight game, 18-14. In the reggies, Narraweena, Valleys, Beacon Hill and Asquith were the winners.

ROWDY MERCER APPOINTED TO A GRADE

Jamie 'Rowdy' Mercer will step up from Under 19s to A Grade this Saturday (June 7 2003). Rowdy will referee the Forestville Vs Narraweena A Grade fixture at Forestville Oval, at 5pm. Congratulations Rowdy, and best of luck Saturday.

Weekend of Thrills And Spills In the Local League

Hornsby suffered their first defeat of the season with star Cliff Lyons sin-binned, Forestville had their blackest weekend in years, Craig Field made his debut for Belrose, and Asquith beat the more fancied Valleys at home Sunday (June 1 2003). On the juniors front, the newly promoted Matt Finch had a huge trifecta pay-out, overseeing three games for a cumulative score of 176 to 22. Cromer caused the first upset in a game that could have gone either way at St Matthews Farm, with the local side edging out Hornsby 14-10 at the finish. Hornsby star Cliff Lyons joined a Cromer player in the sin-bin for the closing minutes. Forestville forfeited the Reserve Grade against Beacon Hill, and were then trounced 64 to 4 in the A Grade. Craig Field made a number of cameo appearances from the bench for Belrose, and in the process set up two tries, helping the 'Roses to a 44-22 win over Narraweena. The game was watched by an extremely large crowd, most of which agreed the score was no indication of the closeness of the game. Asquith beat Valleys convincingly in a hard fought game at Harbord Park, the score being 20-12. In the Reserve Grade the winners were Cromer, Beacon Hill (on forfeit), Valleys, and Narraweena (the score being 26-24 with Narraweena snatching victory in the final seconds).

No Training This Week, Meeting Tuesday Night Harbord Bowling Club

New Supplies In Of Raincoats and Whistles

Jayson Elkins, gear guru, has advised he has received new supplies of raincoats. These are see-through, and are the only ones authorised for use during games. A large number of Acme Thunderer whistles have also been brought in. These are normally $25 at sports stores, but they're available through the association at $15. See Jayson for details, or phone him on 9970 6233 during business hours, or on the mobile 0401 242 300.

Drinks At The Brookvale Pub After Training This Week

Following training at Brookvale Oval this Tuesday (May 27 2003) there will be drinks, and a steak (or whatever) at the Brookvale Hotel. It'll be a chance for everyone to get together, have a beer, and a yarn and generally catch up. It will also be a good time to wish Dane Pymble bon voyage. Dane leaves Friday for 3 months in Britain.

Torrential Weekend Rain Fails To Deter Games Going Ahead

Despite heavy rain Saturday night, and throughout Sunday (May 25 2003), all fixtures went ahead as planned. Some grounds were extremely boggy, and others largely under water. At Lionel Watts in the A Grade, Belrose won by a huge margin over Asquith, 56 to 4. Beacon Hill brought the Narraweena fairy-tale to a convincing pause with a 36-6 win, while at a heavily flooded Harbord Park, Cromer beat Valleys in a tight game, 10-6. The Hornsby/Forestville game, set down for Waitara Oval, was shifted to Reub Hudson. With 15 minutes to go the score was nil-all. Cliff Lyons then came on to the field, and in the closing minutes Hornsby put 10 points on the board, to win 10-nil. In the reggies, the winners were Valleys, Asquith, Narraweena and Hornsby. The call of the day was from Paul Harradine, who reprimanding two players told them he was mindful of putting them both in the bin, but opted to declare "you can stay out here in the rain with the rest of us".

Bowling Night A Success

Despite the stormy conditions, a large number of members and guests turned out Saturday night (May 24 2003) for the 10-pin bowling night. Competition was rife with Dave Lombardo, Rob Peard and Andrew Skelton leading the charge. Peardie remarked at the start of the night, that he hadn't bowled for years, before consecutively bowling strike after strike. (He probably spent the week practising). Frank Samyia, social guru, said the night was popular, and another would be organised later in the season.

All Manly District Grounds Closed For Weekend, All Games Cancelled

David Jay, Director of Referees, has advised that all games in the Manly district, scheduled for Saturday (May 17 2003) and Sunday (May 18 2003) have been cancelled. Torrential rain through the week has resulted in all grounds being closed for the weekend. There will be a re-draw to account for the canceleld fixtures.

Narraweena Shines In 20-all Draw With Hornsby

Narraweena are fast becoming a force in both the A Grade and A Reserve Grade competitions with a 20-all draw in the major league, at Narraweena Oval Sunday (May 11 2003). Both sides attempted a field goal in the final seconds, and both failed. In the Reserve Grade, Narraweena remain undefeated after a 10-6 win over Hornsby. At Forestville Oval Valleys recorded their first win of the season over Forestville, the score 42-24, Belrose defeated Beacon Hill 36-6, while at Storey Park Cromer defeated local side Asquith 22-16.

Congratulations Dave Jay And Ralph Mills On Engagements

David Jay recently announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Donna, with wedding bells to ring (appropriately) on All Saints Day (November 1). Meanwhile Ralph Mill's recent engagement at the Old Manly Boatshed turned into exactly that. Whilst on stage, and bringing the house down mind you, Ralph proposed to his girlfriend and (appropriately) was taken up on his offer.

Ralph Mills To Star At The Old Manly Boat Shed

A Reserve Grade referee Ralph Mills will take to the stage this Thursday night (April 17 2003), at the Old Manly Boat Shed. He'll be doing a solo performance during the song writers night, at 8:45pm. We're told it will be Ralph's third live performance. His first performance was 30 years ago, after which 14 year old girls reportedly chased him down the street. He's not expecting the girsl (now probably in their 40s) to be turning up to rekindle the flame, however the night should be a lot of fun. Members who are free should get along and see Ralph in action.

Greg Florimo Not Playing For Asquith

Early season talk had Greg Florimo making a come-back and playing for Asquith, and former Manly 5/8 Cliff Lyons, turning out for Hornsby. While Cliffy is in fact turning out for the Lions, Flo only made a cameo appearance in the first game of the round, a derby clash between Asquith and Hornsby. It was all part of a fund-raiser promoted by the North Sydney Rugby League Club, of which Greg is CEO.

Members Thoughts Go Out To Barry Cross

We're sad to report that Kath Cross, wife of esteemed long-serving, and life member Barry Cross, passed away on the weekend. Kath, who had been battling illness for some time, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning (April 13 2003). The thoughts of the Executive and all members are with Barry, who shared the majority of his life with Kath, as indeed he has with our association.

Underdogs, North Sydney Teams Dominate Round 2 Of A Grade

Both North Sydney teams were victors over Manly sides, as the underdogs in every game overcame the favourites, in round 2 of the A Grade at the weekend.
Saturday night (April 12 2003) at Forestville Oval, the local side started the trend with a tight 2-points win over the more fancied Belrose. The local derby was played before a big crowd, with both sides having their share of opportunities. It was 4 tries-all at the finish, with a goal being the decider. Meantime at Harbord Park, in another nail-biting finish, Hornsby just edged out Valleys to win 20-18 on the Sunday (April 13 2003). Also on Sunday at Storey Park, the local side, were too good for Beacon Hill, Asquith winning 20-8 . At St Matthews Farm in a scrappy game Cromer, after being up 14-0 at one stage, went on to defeat Narraweena 20 to 8.

Dave Naughton At Last On The Road To Recovery

Dave Naughton, who has undergone a major operation, is now looking at getting back to work, and down to some games to watch, and maybe do some advisory. Dave has had a difficult time over the past few weeks, but from all indications the operation was successful, and further treament in the months ahead, which will be mainly precautionary, should ensure he completely recovers. Dave was re-admitted to Royal North Shore Hospital Sunday April 6, but he is hoping to be released Friday April 11. All members and families of the association extend their best wishes to you David on a quick, and comprehensive recovery, and hope to see you back soon.

BELROSE 28 IN TENACIOUS WIN OVER VALLEYS 24

After slipping away early with two quick tries, Belrose looked set to dominate the A Grade fixture at Lionel watts Sunday (April 6 2003). Ealy in the first half, the local side led 14-0. Valleys responded from then on and just before half time, the score was 20-14. Twice late in the second half, scores levelled, first at 20-all, then 24-all. A try to Belrose in the final seconds gave them victory, 28-24. Josh Stuart gave one of the best performances ever in the Manly A Grade competition, with numerousd powerful runs, and some crushing defence. The game was marred by several high shots, and was played in sweltering hot conditions, before a large crowd. Over at Beacon Hill Oval, Dave Jay filled in for the injured Dave Lombardo, and another great A Grade fixture unfolded. It was nil-all approaching half-time, when the local team started to get the upper hand. Even with seconds to go though, there were only 6 points the difference at 14-8. In the dying moments Beacon Hill notched up a try to won comfortably 20 to 8. Paul Harradine did the reserve grade, his first competition game in 10 years, and sent a player off, on a touch judge's report. At Narraweena, Forestville led 12-nil, before the locals not only got the upper hand, but went on to win by a wide 30 points to 12 margin. In the other A Grade game played at North Sydney, the local deby between Asquith and Hornsby resulted in a win to Hornsby. The game was played at Waitara Oval, which means all four A Grade games, in the first round of the competition, were won by home sides.

DAVE LOMBARDO SIDELINED AFTER HORRIFIC WORK INJURY

Dave Lombardo was admitted to hospital Tuesday afternoon (April 1 2003), when he mangled his hand after accidently slipping on to a power plane. He was taken to the Hospital Emergency section, where he was admitted in a matter of seconds. Six hours later he was being operated on by a specialist. With many of his fingers gouged, grafts and wire pins had to be applied to avoid amputation. A hospital spokesman said he would be off work for up to 3 months. As far as refereeing is concerned, he will be unlikely to be available until after Easter at the earliest. Best of luck Dave on a fast recovery.

David Jay Now Active In Australian Rugby League And New South Wales Referees Associations

David Jay is making a name for himself in the coaching ranks of the New South Wales Rugby League Referees Association. Aside from tending to the Director of Referees role in Manly, David is now on the NSWRL Advisory Board, and with Barry Keenahan is responsible for the running of the Level 1 course for the ARLRA. At a recent seminar for the NSW Country Rugby League Referees Association, David not only took the early Saturday morning on field session (wonder if he did the concentration drill?), he also fronted a very professional ‘advantage’ session in the afternoon, and then, according to reports, ‘networked like crazy on the Saturday night’. A recent bulletin by Mick Stone made reference to David, saying, “We’ll be seeing a lot more of him”.

Season Training Commences This Tuesday Night With Barbeque To Follow At Harro

Season training will commence this Tuesday night (April 1 2003) at 6:30pm sharp, at Brookvale Oval. Members should be there by 6:20pm as teams will be allocated prior to training. A BBQ will follow the session, which will be short and sharp, at Paul Harrdine's house at 14 Adam Street, Curl Curl. Pre-season training this year was again staged at South Curl Curl beach, and concluded Tuesday before last, with the General Meeting having been held last Tuesday night.

Call For Greater Attendance At General Meetings

Secretary Jason Walsh has today issued a call for greater commitment by members, particularly in relation to attendance at general meetings. It is important for members to participate in meetings, catch up with fellow members, and provide input into the running of the association, he said. At last night's meeting it was resolved that meetings be at 6.30pm, in line with training. A switch for the annual general meeting from Sundays back to Friday evenings is also to be considered. At last night's meeting Colin Jones of the newly formed Affiate Liason Committee of the NSWRLRA addressed members, outlining the objectives of the committee, which is headed by Brian Gilchrist. Other news out of the meeting included the come-back to refereeing of Scott Burdon, the aawrding of life membership by the Junior League to his dad, Christian Brothers A Grade to play in the North Sydney competition, together with a supplementary Belrose A Grade side, swipe cards to be introduced for A and A Reserve Grades in place of team sheets, Scott Scheibel out for the season with a shoulder injury, Dave Naughton laid up with illness, a report on the Judiciary revealing 32 players were sent off in 2002, of which only 1 was found not guilty, sentences varied from 3 months to a suspended sentence, and 86 players were sin-binned. Members are reminded to submit sin-bin forms as they are now being recorded. Jason Elkins was re-appointed Gear Steward and joins the Advisory board, together with Rocky Davis and Paul Harradine. Rob Peard has become the Coaching Director, with assistance from Andrew Skelton.

General Meeting To Be Held This Tuesday Night March 25 2003 At Harbord Bowling Club

The second General Meeting of the association is being held this Tuesday the 25th March 2003 at the Harbord Bowling Club at 7.30pm.

A representative of the NSWRLRA Colin Jones will be in attendance and will be discussing the
role that the NSWRLRA will be taking this year with the affiliated associations.

Secretary Jason Walsh is encouraging members to attend, saying this week that meetings are a good time to catch up with fellow members, put
ideas across the floor in General Business, and have input into the direction of the Association.

2003 Broovale Oval Seminar A Success

The 2003 season is set to start on the weekend of April 5 and 6, and will culminate with the A Grade Grand Final on August 24. There will be no games over Easter, and the annual Manly/South Sydney Charity Day will be held on July 5th. Details on the forthcoming season were outlined at the opening of the Manly Referees Seminar at Brookvale Oval on the weekend (Sunday March 16 2003). David Jay opened the conference by welcoming North Sydney representatives Mick Quayley and John Parsons. Rocky Davis presented the bi-annual sponsorship cheque of $1,500 from the Harbord Bowling Club, of which he is a director. Discussion centered on the declining number of teams in the Manly Junior League with around 20 teams to be lost from last season. Frank Cridland said he had submitted a report to the Junior League which was now in the hands of the NRL. The situation in Manly is a general problem for the national body, he told members. There will be 8 A Grade and Reserve Grade teams this year. The conference decided to press the Junior League for in-goal touch judges to be appointed for the finals series of those competitions. President Rob Peard called on members to be committed, and to accept they had responsibilities and obligations. He asked referees be available for trials even though there is no payment. If members are not going to be available through the season, they should advise the Director of Referees at least a week in advance in writing (longer if pre-commitments such as 21sts, weddings etc). Withdrawals should be avoided because of the domino effect they cause with appointments. Rob asked members to be cordial to players and officials after games, and to spend time explaining decisions if called upon, particularly with A Grade. Action should be taken on foul play, the safe-play code should be enforced, and touch judges should be vigilant. Sin-bin forms are also to be completed as they are now being acted on by the judiciary. David Jay wrapped up the conference with a power-point display on goal-setting, stressing that referees should set specific, measurable, achievable, responsible and trackable goals, which improve preparation, make training more challengeable, increase motivation, satisfaction and self-confidence, and improve performance. A BBQ rounded up the day, which was well attended, well conducted, and well received.

CONGRATULATIONS TO DANIELLE BERRY, NOW 18!

Congratulations are extended to Danielle Berry, who recently celebrated her 18th birthday.

SUNDAY MARCH 16 PRE-SEASON CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT BROOKVALE OVAL THIS SUNDAY

All members are invited to the Manly Warringah Referees Seminar, to be held in the NRL video room at Brookvale Oval, this Sunday 16 March 2003
commencing at 9.00am sharp. The seminar will run till about 1.30pm AND will include a BBQ lunch. All active Referees are expected, and all members are very welcome, to attend. The Agenda for the day is likely to be:

2003 Policies for Appointments,
Open Forum,
The President's Expectations,

Goal-Setting for Referees,
What the Referees' Coach expects of a Referee,
and finally the BBQ lunch.

It is likely that a number of Referees from the North Sydney Association will be joining in, and it is good to note the support of the Manly Sea Eagles, who not only have made Brookvale Oval available for the day, but will also be intending for at least a part
of the Seminar. Members should confirm their attendance with David Jay so social arrangements can be finalised.

Training Kicks Off For 2003 At South Curl Curl

A squad of 17 turned out for the first pre-season training session of the year last night (Tuesday February 4 2003).

Held at South Curl Curl beach, the training squad included NSWRA Chairman and fellow member, Tony Danks, Greg Diews, making a comeback, and Todd Douglas, who has joined the association from Cronulla. Others in attendance included Rob Peard, Dave Naughton, Ralph Mills, Danielle Berry, Bevan Bourke, John McEvoy, Dave Lombardo, Greg Kidd, Ryan Alexander, Paul Harradine, Dane Pymble, and trainer Dave Jay.

Ocean sprints, musical flags, and a passing drill in the pool, were the highlights of the night, a relatively easy, fun session to kick off the season.

Training for the next few weeks will continue to be at South Curl Curl beach (near the pool), at 6:30PM.

Top China Referee Jailed For 10 Years For Accepting Bribes

Gong Jianping, China's number 1 football referee, has been jailed in Beijing for taking bribes totalling US$45,000.

At the end of 2001 China was engulfed in a "black whistle" scandal related to the widespread bribing of referees.

Gong was arrested last year, after taking money 9 times from 2000 to 2001.

Frustration over corruption in China's football scene spilled over into violence last March, when hundreds of spectators rioted in the northern city of Xian, after the referee awarded a late penalty to the visiting team.

Fans reportedly shouted "Black whistle!" as they pelted players and police with plastic bottles, lighters and other missiles.

ORIGIN OF NSW REFEREES ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GOLF DAY WAS WITH MANLY REFS

The New South Wales Referees Golf Day last weekend (January 19 2003), has been an annual event for the past 35 years. The man responsible for what has become such a long-standing tradition, is Manly's Barry Cross. Barry organised the first such event, which took place on January 29 1968 at Warringah. A number of luminaries participated inlcuding Tom Bellew, Eric Cox, and three then-first grade referees Laurie Bruyeres, Carl Langton and Don McDonald (then a Newtown association member, but later to join Manly). It was a huge day, with an enourmous number of referees, and officials involved. Barry Cross, we're reliably informed, couldn't play on the first day and together with Arthur Konnecke, an Easts Ref, handed out soft drinks and beer on the 9th hole. Every time someone had a soft drink they had a beer, with predictable results at the end.
