Top Soccer Referee Retires After Turning 45
With a shortage of news over the Summer Manly Refs features a report on the retirement of the leading Swiss referee Urs Meier – the man at the centre of a storm of protest from England fans earlier this year – who hung up his whistle this weekend. Meier bowed out after controlling Saturday’s (December 11 2004) Super League draw between leaders Basel and second-placed Thun. It’s not that Meier wants to stop…but the rules say that at the age of 45 he has to retire.
Despite an illustrious career as one of the world’s most respected arbiters of the game, Meier will probably go down in the history books as the man who invoked the wrath of the English.
His decision to disallow a headed goal by Sol Campbell in the closing minutes of England’s Euro 2004 quarter-final against host nation Portugal made him a scapegoat in the eyes of many irate England fans for their country’s exit from the tournament. Portugal went on to defeat England 6-5 on penalties, after the two sides were deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of extra time.
The controversy surrounding the decision is also thought to have robbed him of his dream of blowing the whistle in the final of the competition between Portugal and Greece. The English tabloids had a field day with their hate campaign against Meier, forcing him to leave Switzerland for a while to escape the backlash.
He was placed under police protection after receiving more than 16,000 emails, including death threats. In October hackers broke into Meier’s website and posted a fake apology for the ruling against England. It was all a far cry from the day when a keen 18-year-old Meier, attending his first training course, said his aim was to referee a game at the 1998 World Cup finals – a goal he achieved. Meier’s career began in 1977 with a match between the juniors of Schinznach-Bad and Aarau. Thirteen years later, he had risen through the ranks to officiate his first National League “A” game between Young Boys of Bern and St Gallen. He went on to referee more than 200 games in Switzerland’s top league. His most emotional game was the World Cup tie in 1998 between the United States and Iran, which the host nation lost 2-1. “I had achieved my main aim of taking part in the World Cup finals and I went on the pitch with tears in my eyes,” he recalls.
“The ‘political match’ between the US and Iran was my dream tie. Many of my fellow referees did not seem to be aware of the significance of this game.” Believe it or not, one of his favourites games of football was the fateful Portugal-England match. “That match was real enjoyment and you could hardly beat it for drama,” remembers Meier. He believes his most difficult match was the World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Brazil (2-1) in 2001. “This was the one and only time that I wished for a second referee, because the tempo was so horrendous,” he says. “I ran so hard my lungs almost burst, and I still had the impression that I was miles away from the action.” Meier has never been a showman like Italy’s bald-headed Pierluigi Collina, and you won’t see the Swiss referee's face on advertising hoardings. He says he would love to whistle on, because at 45 he feels he’s perfectly fit in mind and body. |

Aboriginals Win Inaugural Indigenous Peoples Pacific Cup
Manly Refs officiated at the inaugural Pacific Cup for indigenous people at Pittwater Park Saturday (October 30 2004). The knock-out tournament was staged over the entire day with the first game at 9:30am and the final at 5:00pm. The Aboriginals team was successful in the first game against the Barbarians and went on to compete in the final against the Maoris. Although the Maoris scored first, the Aboriginals in the end were comprehensive in their win, the final score being 30-14. The game marked a return to refereeing for David Jay who was assisted on the lines by David Lombardo and Chris Bignold. In the play-off for third and fourth, with David Lombardo in control and David Jay and Chris Bignold in support, Tonga was successful over Samoa. In the game prior Rob Peard tore a hamstring and had to be replaced 10 minutes into the game. A big crowd was in attendance for the day, and particularly the final. The tournament was played in excellent conditions, and the venue Pittwater Park was superb. The event was very well organised and a tribute to all those involved. Eddie Brown, who created the concept, was honoured by being awarded the kick-off in the inaugural game of the event. Aside from the Aboriginals, the Maoris, Tonga, and Samoa who shared the honours, Fiji, and the Barbarians also participated. |

Hundreds Gather To Celebrate Life of Clinton Rowley
21 year old Clinton Rowley, a Manly referee, was laid to rest Wednesday (October 27 2004) after battling three bouts of cancer over the past 12 years. After playing in the Belrose Under 9s rugby league premiership win in 1992, in December of that year, Clinton was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After an operation and intensive treatment he made what seemed a full recovery, resuming sports activity in which he excelled to win several awards. In 1998 there was a sudden and unexpected relapse, another operation and more treatment. He again appeared to make a full recovery. Early last year however he was again diagnosed with cancer and underwent intensive chemotherapy treatment again for the third time. Despite his illness he battled on gaining his P-plates in April this year and attending TAFE at every opportunity. Clinton was born in Manly and attended Wakehurst Primary and Manly Warringah High School. Despite long absences from school he gained the HSC. At Wednesday's service his teacher of Wakehurst days said Clinton, when he was unable to play contact sports, "with great pride and accomplishment became a rugby league referee." She talked of his walking from Belrose to Brookvale for training, and his enjoyment of the comaraderie of his times with the Manly Referees. Those in attendance Wednesday were told of Clinton's perseverance and determination to overcome his long and hard battles against the odds. People had flown from Fiji and Perth where Clinton once lived. The service concluded with a song by the Fijians in attendance (Clinton was of Fijian heritage) called Sa vakalailai tale (A few more weary marchings). A guard of honour was formed by Clinton's team mates from Belrose rugby league club, which included fellow referee Dane Pymble, who captained the Under 9-2s the same year the Under 9-1s won the premiership. The Association was well represented and sends its deepest condolences to Clinton's mother Ana, father Maurice, brother Ronald, and sister Kimberley. |

Rob Peard Presented With Life Membership Blazer
In a fitting finale to the 2004 Annual Presentation and Ladies Day President Rob Peard was presented with a blazer to mark his elevation to life membership of the association. Master of Ceremonies David Jay, who had nominated Rob, said in his opinion no-one deserved life membership more. He pointed out Rob had won the Danny Stewart this year for the fourth time in the last 10 years, during which he has served as Secretary, Director of Referees, and President. Rob in accepting the blazer immediately went to the inside pocket where there was a prepared speech. He said he was truly honoured and privileged to receive life membership. He thanked his nominator, David Jay, and his seconder Addie Flippance, both he said had very high personal standards, and both were still contributing to the association. He also thanked Phillip Brown, the unofficial association historian, for his support, and wife Pam, who along with other members of Rob’s family was in attendance. He said he wished to thank his peers in the association and pledged his continual contribution in the future. |

The Danny Stewart Trophy Awarded to Rob Peard
Voted the member who contributed the most to the association, and a stalwart in all aspects of the running of the association, Association President Rob Peard was awarded the Danny Stewart Trophy for 2004, at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Day. Danny Stewart is considered the pioneer of the Manly Refs association, and was in attendance at the inaugural meeting in 1935. He is recognised as having made the most significant contribution to the associations in its' history. David Jay, in presenting the award, said Danny was the first Life Member of the District Club, of the Junior League and of Manly Refs. He took pride in presenting the award for 2004 to the most recent Life Member of our association. Rob said he was very honoured to receive the award and said he hoped to continue to contribute back to the association in the years ahead. |

Shane Charman Lands Bill Grono Memorial Award
Barry Cross, Bill Grono’s best mate, again presented the award named in his honour, at the 2004 Annual Presentation and Ladies Day to the person considered by members to be the one that had contributed most to the game of Rugby League during the year. Before making the announcement and presentation, Barry pointed out 2004 was the tenth anniversary of Bill’s passing. He said he was one of the nicest blokes in the district as a teacher, mentor and friend. He received his ticket in 1951, and was a graded referee from 1967 until 1980. He also spent 37 years in administration, was secretary of Manly Refs for 22 years, and was president for 15 years. He was made a Life Member in 1962, and is one of only three members to be awarded the Honour Blazer. The annual award in his honour is regarded as being for the person who has contributed the most to fostering the objectives of the association and the game of rugby league, and is somewhat of a 'clubman of the year' award. Barry announced the 2004 winner as the Associations’ hard working Secretary Shane Charman, who also doubles as Delegate to the New South Wales Rugby League, in addition to his responsibilities as an A Grade referee. Shane in response said he was a bit shocked but thanked everyone in the Association for the award. |

David Lombardo Again Is Referee Of The Year
The A Grade Grand Final pewter for 2004 was presented to David Lombardo for the third year in a row at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Day. In attendance to present the award was Barrie Keenahan from the Ilawarra Division Referees Association, this year celebrating its eighty- fifth year (Although Rugby League has been played in The Illawarra since 1910 the referees association was formed in 1919). Barrie refereed the last fully-fledged Illawarra First Grade Grand Final in1981 after which the division entered the ARL (1982). Barrie followed the division into the ARL. He was graded in 1982 and went on to referee first grade. Barrie congratulated Dave and pointed out doing two grand finals in a row could sometimes be considered a fluke, but doing 3 was a real feat, particularly considering Dave was a “small bloke” like himself. Dave said he was honoured to receive the award, especially given the competition of the likes of Shane Charman, Greg Kidd, Jayson Elkins, and Greg Kidd . He also thanked his touch judges throughout the year, the Advisory Board, particularly Dave Naughton who continued to contribute substantially despite health issues earlier on, David Jay, and Rob Peard who he congratulated on his life membership saying that the day was Rob’s day. |

Greg Diews Wins Frank Walsh Memorial Trophy
The late Frank Walsh was remembered at the Annual Presentation and Ladies Day with his memorial trophy being presented to the most improved referee, as considered by the Director of Referees and the advisory panel. Frank Walsh was dedicated to rugby league, and the annual presentation of the trophy is a fitting tribute to him. Rob Peard, in announcing the 2004 winner, said again the association had received very positive feedback from the clubs in the district and the Junior League, on the standard of refereeing during the year. He said the nomination for the member whose refereeing had improved the most in 2004 was derived from a spirited meeting of advisory board members, where Greg Diews had been the choice. Greg thanked wife Jayne for “pushing him out the door each Sunday”, the Advisory Board for their efforts through the year, and to everyone involved. |

Clive Rogers Memorial Trophy Winner in 2004 Named As Bevan Bourke
Following on from being the inaugural winner of the AAMI Encouragement Award in 2003, following which he made a memorable speech, Bevan Bourke was again congratulated by his peers on Saturday at the 2004 Annual Presentation and Ladies Day. Before presenting the award David Jay noted the great work done by Clive Rogers, particularly for referees in the junior ranks. Clive ironically only started refereeing in his 60s or 70s, yet still had a lot of time for the junior referees making their way. The award in his honour is for a young referee who has performed extremely well, and is considered to have great potential for the future. David pointed out Bevan is a very young person but has a level of maturity beyond his years which has stood him in good stead in his refereeing. In accepting the award Bevan thanked AAMI and the Harbord Bowling Club, the Advisory Board, and David Jay for their support through the year. |

Dave Liuzzo Awarded 2004 A A M I Encouragement Award
Anthony Dunstan of AAMI was again on hand at the 2004 Annual Presentation and Ladies Day to bestow the AAMI Encouragement Award. Anthony’s company is very heavily involved in sport and the community generally, and is the major sponsor of the NRL referees. Anthony congratulated the association on its efforts in furthering the ideals of sport and rugby league in particular on the north shore, where he said AAMI is heavily involved. He congratulated Dave Liuzzo on his winning of the award in 2004. Dave thanked AAMI, and the Advisory Board for their efforts during the year. |

Annual Presentation And Ladies Day Concludes 2004 Season
On Saturday October 23 2004 Manly Warringah referees celebrated the end to the season with the Annual Presentation and Ladies Day, at The Ketch restaurant, at The Spit. The venue was a fantastic setting overlooking the water, and the weather chimed in with one of the best days of the year. Frank Samyia the association’s Social Secretary welcomed the large gathering and introduced the Master of Ceremonies David Jay. David Jay welcomed Anthony Dunstan of AAMI who also spent last year with us. Visitors from other associations were also welcomed, along with members and their guests, and particularly the extended family of Rob Peard who was presented with his Life Member’s blazer. Younger referee Dave Liuzzo, started the formalities with a toast to the ladies in attendance. Hmmm. Dave thanked all the wives, mothers, sisters, and girl friends for their support during the year, washing members uniforms, and putting up with them not being around a lot of the time. There were a large number of Life Members in attendance and a toast was also held in their honour. They comprised Addie Flippance, Barry Cross, Phillip Brown, David Jay, Dave Naughton, Brian Gately, and of course Rob Peard. David Jay gave out tips for the AAMI Vase at 4.15pn and pointed out there was a TAB next door to The Ketch. His choices were number 8 Blasted and number 5 Mr. Martini. They eventually came in first and second, the winner starting at 80/1. Rob Peard’s mobile phone went off early in proceedings after which an auction was held to determine the level of fine. In a spirited affair it was concluded that Rob should pay for cabs for all members at the conclusion of the night. Members should submit their cab receipts to Rob as soon as possible so payment can be made. Later in the day Dave Jay’s phone went off and the auctioneering started again with the result that David is to be suspended for six months. A great band was in attendance playing throughout the day. Quite a number took to the dancing floor although Paul Harradine had to entice the reluctant Jenny Harradine to take part. A great three-course meal was provided, all the 2004 awards were presented and the day of course was topped off by the awarding of a Life Membership blazer to Rob Peard. At the conclusion of the formalities David Jay thanked Frank Samyia and the social committee for their efforts on the day, but it should be noted much of the organization was in fact done by David. The presentation was a great success and for all in attendance the first time the presentation had been held during the day. |

Grand Final Long Weekend Continues With Golf Day Outing
Manly refs took a well earned break from the football Monday (August 30 2004) as members turned out for the traditional Mad Monday Golf Day. This year the venue was Mona Vale Golf Course, and sixteen members took part. Kick-off was at 10.40am, a late start which meant a late finish, and no lunch as the restaurant was closed after the 18-holes of golf. The winners (as expected) were the best scorers of the day, the team headed up by Rob Peard, Dave Jay, Phil Brown and Ian Rigby. We are told it was only the efforts of David Jay and the scoring of Rob Peard that kept the team in contention. We cannot get confirmation of the score, at least from an independent party; this is not withstanding that David Jay, one of the association's auditors was a member of the winning team. Runners-up were Messrs Naughton (father and son), Bevan Bourke, Dave Liuzzo, Danielle Berry, Luke Eisenhauer, Greg Diews, Rocky Davis, John Mac, Greg Kidd, Tom Berry, and Todd Eisenhauer (not in that order). All refs were mobile for the event (in carts), drinks were supplied, and the venue was fantastic. Following the golf it was off to the Pizza Hut at Warriewood, at the suggestion of Tom Berry, for a banquet of salads, pizzas and desserts. The sixteen at this point were joined by Todd Douglas. Then for the hard core it was back to the Harbord Bowling Club for drinks, where Dave Lombardo, Nathan Hogan, Shane Charman and Jayson Elkins were amongst those that joined the fray. A lot of stories were told on the day, but as with a trip away, what happens on tour stays on tour. |

Narraweena Cap 2004 Season With A Grade Grand Final win over Valley
Valley were held tryless in a thriller of an A Grade Grand Final Sunday (August 29 2004) at Brookvale Oval. The game was tight until well into the second half, before Narraweena began to dominate. At half-time the score was 6-2, and that scoreline remained until 20 minutes to go. A Valley player was sent from the field about that time and a minute or so later Narraweena in a move over about 70 metres touched down under the posts. Minutes from the end Narraweena touched down again. With both the second-half tries converted Narraweena ran out winners 18 to 2. Dave Lombardo was in charge, his third A Grade Grand Final in Manly. Prior to joining Manly Dave refereed four A Grade Grand Finals in the North Sydney District. On the lines on Sunday were Ian Rigby and John McEvoy. In the A2 Grand Final Forestville and Valley 2 did battle with the Ferrets drawing first blood eight minutes into the game with a penalty goal. Five minutes later they followed up with a converted try to lead 8-0. Valley retaliated with a try and the scores alternated from there on with the scoreline not conceding more than four points for most of the game. The half-time score was 20-16 with Forestville in front. The second half was marred by an all-in brawl midway through. Two players were sent from the field, one from each side. Five minutes from the end Forestville scored and with the conversion snatched the Grand Final to win 26-16. Shane Charman, rated in the top two referees in the district for the past three seasons, handled the game, his first A2/Reserve Grade Grand Final. Previously he controlled the number two-ranked Under 19 Grand Finals. On his lines were Dale Martinuzzo and Ralph Mills. The Under 19s saw South Eastern take charge early with two tries in the first ten minutes. The South Sydney Juniors-based team scored again with ten minutes to go, and again with four minutes to go in the first half, to lead 20-0 at half-time. Valley fought back in the second half scoring more points but the horse had bolted. South Eastern with a further try and a field goal to Valley's two tries saw the final score at 25 to 8. Greg Kidd was in control of his first Under 19s Grand Final, supported by Nathan Hogan and Todd Douglas. In the Under 17s Grand Final North Curl Curl dominated a tight game well into the second half. The half-time score was 6-0 and this scoreline remained until 20 minutes to go before a flurry of tries from Curly saw them move well ahead. Jayson Elkins was at the controls with Danielle Berry and Chris Bignold on the flanks. It was a big weekend for Jayson. On Friday night (August 27 2004) he handled the NSW Police Grand Final which saw a comfortable win to the Correctional Services Cougers over Penrith Police 32-12. The Under 16s saw traditional rivals Narraweena and Manly Cove do battle. The two champion junior sides shared the winning honours throughout the season. The finals were no different. The previous time they met in the semi-final Manly Cove were the winners 36-32. On Sunday the roles were reversed and Narraweena won 32-16. In command was Greg Diews while touch-judges were Lawrie Lawira and Dave Liuzzo. Cove's loss was exacerbated by the loss of 5/8 Maurice Kennedy who was injured and was taken to hospital by ambulance in a neck brace. The Under 15s saw a major upset with the favoured North Curl Curl going down to a spirited Christian Brothers side. In one of the best games of the day the score was 12-all with minutes to go before North Curl Curl snatched the lead with a field goal to lead 13-12. Christian Brothers however with three minutes to go touched down to win the game, and the 2004 premiership, by 16 to 13. Jamie Mercer was the referee, his second Under 15s Grand Final, with Bevan Bourke and Frank Cridland backing up. In the A3 Grand Final at Habord Park Narraweena 2 beat Christian Brothers 20 to 12. For the Narraweena side it was back-to-back grand finals as they won the A Reserve Grade Grand Final last year. Rocky Davis was the referee, his first grand final appointment in a career of A Grade refereeing, playing and coaching. Rocky did however referee the second half of the A Reserve Grade Grand Final last year after Paul Harradine had to withdraw at half-time through injury. |

Junior Grand Finals Played Out At Brookvale Oval And Nolans 1
In brilliant sunshine the juniors turned out to put on a superb day's football Saturday (August 28 2004). Starting the day Mona Vale 7s had a big win over Harbord 2 at Brookvale Oval, the score 31 to 12. Phillip Brown was in the centre with back-to-back Under 7 grand finals. He was ably supported by Greg Kidd and Addie Flippance. At the same time, also at Brookvale, the Under 7.2s saw a major victory for Manly Cove over Beacon Hill, the score 43-15. Greg Diews handled that game (and managed to keep all the players on the field). Rob Peard and Dave Naughton lined the flanks. In both divisions of the Under 8s Mona Vale was successful. In the 8.1s it was Mona Vale 28 defeating Avalon 7. The game was refereed by Addie Flippance with Philip Brown and Greg Kidd in support. The Under 8.2s was handled by Dave Naughton with support from Rob Peard and Greg Diews. Mona Vale in this game defeated Beacon Hill, the score 43-10. The Under 9.1s at Brookvale Oval, with Rob Peard in charge, got to 13-all before Christian Brothers moved ahead to 26-18 before the finish. Rob, we are told (by Rob), overcame an ankle injury but thrust through the pain barrier to complete the match. Waiting in the wings were Phil Brown and Addie Flippance. The Under 9.2s at Nolans 1 saw one of the closest games of the day. Belrose eventually edged out Narraweena 19-18. Paul Bryant, who refereed the game, did a spectacular backward flip (accidently) but recovered quicky to resume play without any hesitation. Assisting Paul were Todd Eisenhauer and Frank Samyia. The Under 10.1s at Brookvale Oval saw some drama in the first half when referee Jason Fox sent a player from the field shortly before half-time. Mona Vale went on to win the game comfortably over Manly Cove. On the lines for Jason were Greg Kidd and Greg Diews. The Under 10.2s at Nolans 1 saw a clear victory for Avalon over Narraweena. At the controls was Tom Berry with Nathan Hogan and Lawrie Lawira on the lines. The 10.3s was always going to be won by Christian Brothers. The 'Brothers had two teams in the grand final, Christian Brothers 1 and Christian Brothers 2. It was Christian Brothers 2 that took the honours, downing their counterparts 30-27. Todd Eisenhauer was the referee with touch judges Tom Berry and Paul Bryant. The Under 11.2s at Nolans 1 was controlled by Lawrie Lawira with Frank Samyia and Nathan Hogan in support. The game was won by Harbord over Narraweena, by a wide margin. The Under 11.1 Grand Final at Brookvale Oval saw Dave Liuzzo in action. Like Paul Bryant earlier, he took a tumble in the game. After being down at half-time Belrose got to a 12-10 lead with three minutes to go but were pegged by Narrabeen in the final minute with a try which gave them a 15 to 12 victory. Dave had the evergreen Dave Lombardo and John McEvoy on his flanks. The Under 12.2 Grand Final at Nolans 1, with Fred Markezic in the centre, and Nathan Hogan and Dale Martinuzzo backing up, saw the two sides at 8-all at full time, the only draw for the day. In extra time Avalon went on to beat Cromer 15 to 8. The Under 12.1s at Brookvale Oval was a hard fought game. Matt Finch was in charge with Dave Lombardo and John McEvoy on his lines. Finchie was almost the third referee to take a spill on the day but recovered his full composure prior to completion (of the fall). Manly Cove led 13-12 at the break. Cromer scored just after half-time, and Cove shortly thereafter. Just before full time Manly Cove led 18-17 but in the dying moments of the game Cromer touched down for a 5-pointer which, with the conversion, got the Kingfishers home with the score at 24-18. The Under 13s saw Bevan Bourke in charge with Jamie Mercer and Chris Bignold touch judging. The game was totally dominated by Manly Cove in the first half and Belrose in the second half. At half-time Manly Cove led 28-6. In the first 12 minutes though of the second half Belrose scored four tries. Only one was converted but the 'Roses, in a remarkable turnaround, trailed 24-28. In the final minutes however Manly Cove came to their senses and put on a converted try to win 34-24. In the final game, and match of the day at Brookvale Oval the Under 14s Grand Final was played out between Cromer and Avalon. Danielle Berry was in charge of the game for the second year in a row. Avalon scored first wide out, three minutes into the game. Six minutes later Cromer touched down, the score 4-all. Two quick tries at the 21 and 24 minute marks saw Avalon in front 14-4 at the break. With no scores in the second half Cromer went on to become the premiership winners with the score remaining at 14-4. The game concluded a great day of football on two grounds where big crowds were in attendance, where there were no major injuries to report, no dramas and no controversies in terms of refereeing. Congratulations to all concerned. |

Valley In Two Points Win Over Belrose In Preliminary Final
Valley put paid to Belrose in the Preliminary Final Sunday (August 22 2004) at Brookvale Oval, to advance to the Grand Final. The Spartans got to an early 8-0 lead with a converted try at the 15 minute mark, and a penalty goal 20 minutes into the first half. The lead see-sawed in the second half but Belrose were behind 20-12 with eight minutes to go. At that point the 2004 premiers put on a try which they converted to claw the score back to the final result, 20-18. For Belrose captain Josh Stuart it was his last game. Valley will now meet Narraweena in the 2004 A Grade Grand Final next Sunday. In the A2 Preliminary Final Forestville scored first 10 minutes into the game with a try near the posts which was converted. Two minutes later North Curl Curl touched down but failed to convert and trailed 6-4. 10 minutes later North Curl Curl touched down again and led 8-6. Two Foresvtille tries though had the Ferrets back in charge by half-time to lead 16-8. In the first minute of the second half however North Curl Curl scored near the posts, but as with their previous two tries, again they missed the goal. At this point they trailed 16-12. Forestville dominated the rest of the game touching down two minutes later, and again at the 27 and 29 minute marks. With conversions the final result was 32-12. Forestville now meet Valley in the A2 Grand Final. The Under 19s was played at Kensington between Asquith and Southeastern with the winner to play Valley next Sunday. As a result Valley will now contest all three of the top grand finals, the A Grade, A2 and Under 19s. In the earlier games Forestville beat Belrose in the Under 17s for the right to contest the Under 17s Grand Final against North Curl Curl. In the Under 16s Narraweena beat Belrose 46-0 for the right to meet arch rivals Manly Cove in the Under 16s Grand Final, and in the Under 15s Christian Brothers defeated Narraweena 56-12 to qualify for the Under 15s Grand Final which will be against North Curl Curl. Meantime at Harbord Park in the A3 Preliminary Final Christian Brothers overcame Avalon 28-14 to advance to the A3 Grand Final against Narraweena. |

Cromer Win Under 14s To Advance To Grand Final
Cromer will meet Avalon in the Under 14s Grand Final next weekend after defeating Narrabeen in the Preliminary Final on Saturday (August 21 2004) at Reub Hudson. With Danielle Berry in charge of the game Narrabeen took the lead with an early try but were being pressed 10-4 by half-time. Cromer extended their lead in the second half and with seconds remaining led 20-8. Then as the siren was sounding Narrabeen touched down and with the conversion clawed the final score back to 20-14. At Harbord Park the match of the day was the Under 13s Preliminary Final under the control of Bevan Bourke. Belrose led Cromer 10-4 at the break but a converted try by the Kingfishers had the sides level-pegging at 10-all. Cromer got in front eight minutes from the end and led 14-10. Then 5 minutes from the bell Belrose scored and the teams again were level-pegging at 14-all. Three minutes later Belrose touched down again to win the game 18-14. Belrose will now meet Manly Cove in the Under 13s Grand Final next weekend. |

Ken Arthurson To Step Down As Chairman Of District Club
Rugby league's most recognised administrator Ken Arthurson is cutting his last link with the game he has served for 50 years. Arthurson, 75, will step down as chairman of Manly Leagues Club next month, ending three consecutive decades in the job during a career that established him as the most powerful man in the game. "I don't want to be one of those old blokes who just hangs on and hangs on," Arthurson said. "I'm happy to let other people have a go." Arthurson, who now spends much of his time on the Gold Coast, said he could no longer do the job justice. "I'm very much a hands-on type of administrator," he said.
"It's not fair to Manly for me to try and do the job from here." His decision to step down ends the administrative career of one of the most historic leaders the game has known. Arthurson, Manly's halfback in the 1951 grand final, suffered a skull fracture that forced his retirement when playing for Parkes a few years later, pushing him into administration. Initially a committeeman with Manly, Arthurson rose quickly to become the second full-time CEO of a rugby league club in 1963. His skilled negotiations brought big names like Souths' John O'Neill and Ray Branighan to the club, paving the way for Manly's first premiership in 1972. They won again in 1973, 1976, 1978 and 1987. After 20 years as CEO, Arthurson became chairman of the Australian Rugby League. |

North Sydney Oval will host a first grade rugby league match this Sunday (August 22 2004) for the first time in a long time. A Grade Has Roller Coaster Weekend
Plagued by spasmodic showers, powerful winds, and intermittent periods of sunshine, the initial bout of A Grade finals provided a series of spills and turnarounds that confounded coaches, players and spectators. The weekend started out with the cancellation of the Forestville Vs Narrabeen game with reports that Narrabeen had been awarded a premiership while competing teams will contest an invitational challenge shield. Then On Sunday (August 15 2004) Belrose led 12-0 early but went down 26-16 to Narraweena. Incredibly North Curl Curl led 28-0 at half-time and was beaten 30-28. At St Matthews Farm, Narraweena 2, which won the premiership last year, had lost their half-time advantage of 10 points fifteen minutes into the second half when they were down 18-16. It was only 5 minutes from the end that they scored wide out to clinch the game 20-16. In the following game Belrose's 12-0 lead was pegged back to a 12-all scoreline by half-time. In the second half Narraweena added another 14 points to Belrose's 4, to win the game 26-16. The biggest turnaround of the day of course was the Valley 2 Vs North Curl Curl game at Forestville Oval. After being down 28-0 at half-time Valley 2 clawed their way back to 28-24 with seconds to go. Then on the bell they scored to equalise at 28-28 with the kick to come. The kick from Burnsie wide out after the bell was successful with Valley 2 winning 30-28. In the main game at Forestville, Valley 21 beat Cromer 8. In the A3 major final Avalon defeated Cromer 2 by 26 to 10. |

Forestville - Narrabeen A2 Minor Semi-Final Cancelled
Forestville have withdrawn from this Sunday's (August 15 2004) A2 Minor Semi Final against Narrabeen as plans are afoot to partly reshape the competition. Narrabeen were successful in appealing a decision which determined they played an unregistered player earlier this year. The appeal was heard by the District Club. A number of sides including Forestville have objected to the decision and the Junior League is considering a challenge shield for these sides to participate in while Narrabeen continue to contest the A2 competition. |

Cromer And Narrabeen To Contest Under 14s Final
The finals kicked off Saturday (August 14 2004) with games played for Under 7s through to Under 14s. The co-match of the day, the minor semi in the 14s at Hitchock Park was won easily by Narrabeen. At half-time there was little separating the sides with the score at 14-12. However the flood gates opened in the second half and Narrabeen coasted to a 56-12 victory. Meantime in gale force conditions at Lionel Watts, which resembled a dust bowl, in the other match of the day, the major semi in the Under 14s, Cromer broke clear early to lead 12-4 at half-time. Avalon though was successful in fighting back, so much so that they went on to win 20 to 12. Cromer will now meet Narrabeen in the final next week to determine who will play Avalon in the Grand Final. |

Shane Charman On A Roll
Besides being appointed to the crucial A Grade minor semi final this Sunday (August 15 2004), Shane Charman this week landed the top Jersey Flegg appointment. The game between the undefeated competition leaders the Roosters and the second-placed Panthers was set down for 3:30pm at Leichardt Oval on Friday (August 13 2004). It was a precursor to the NRL Roosters/Panthers clash at Aussie Stadium, which saw Penrith, who had beaten Manly the week before by 72 to 12, walloped by the Roosters 44 to 12. Alas Shane tells us the trend was set in the Flegg game when the Panthers were humiliated by the Roosters. The score though was even worse, much worse. 80 to 12. |

A Grade Thrown Wide Open As Cromer Downs Belrose
Cromer bounced back on the weekend with a good win over last year's premiers Belrose at St Matthews Farm. The game Sunday (August 8 2004) reflected a form reversal for the Kingfishers after their defeat just two weeks ago by Valley 2. The local team won the game 18-10. Cromer 2 was not so lucky in their encounter with Valley 2. The visitors won by a large margin. In another close clash at Forestville Oval Narrabeen edged out the local team 24-20. Over at Beverly Job Narrabeen inched ahead of Belrose to to win 90-0, while at Reub Hudson referee Greg Diews sent a North Curl Curl player from the field just 3 minutes into the game. Christian Brothers took the honours over the depleted local side to win 24-14. |

Valley Turn The Tables On Belrose In The A Grade
Valleys were too strong for Belrose in the A Grade at Harbord Park Sunday ( August 1 2004). The final score was 28-20. Good to see old timers Ernie Wadley, Frank Sweeney and Phil Brown (who drove himself to the ground) in the crowd. In the earlier game Valley 2 put on two late tries to defeat Narraweena 2 by 30-20. At St Matthews Farm Narraweena 16 beat a luckless Cromer side 6. Cromer appeared to have the upperhand for most of the game, and led 6-4 at half-time. Meantime Narrabeen edged out Manly Cove at Lake Park. The final score 88 to 4. At Nolans 1 Christian Brothers 34 beat Avalon 10. Avalon had a player sent off midway through the first half. It was the second send-off for the weekend. Dave Liuzzo sent a Narrabeen player from the field in the Under 14s Narrabeen Vs. Asquith game at Lake Park on Saturday (July 31 2004). The A Grade round was marred by two forfeits Sunday. Belrose 2 forfeited to North Curl Curl, and Forestville forfeited to Cromer 2. |

South African Soccer Referee Kills Coach Who Questioned His Rulings
A South African soccer referee pulled a gun and shot dead a coach who questioned one of his rulings. Police Inspector Mali Govender of the Grahamstown police in the Eastern Cape province said a fight broke out after the referee gave a yellow warning card to a player in a local match on Saturday. "There was an altercation... and the referee became threatened when the other team approached him because they were angry," Govender said. "So he pulled out a gun and killed the coach of the visiting team." Govender said the coach died on the pitch while the referee fled the scene. Police were confident of making an arrest soon, she added.

Valley Reserves Topple Cromer At St Matthews Farm
In one of the biggest upsets of the season Valley 2 downed Cromer 16-10 at St Matthews Farm Sunday (July 25 2004). It was the first win by a reserve grade side over an A Grade side for the season, resulting in Valley 2 receiving double competition points. The game was intense right from the start and very physical with good running and defensive plays from both sides. Valley was the first to draw blood five minutes into the game with a converted try. Right on half-time the visitors extended their lead to 8-0 with a penalty goal. Cromer struck back with a try 10 minutes into the second half. With the Valley 2 captain sin-binned at the 18 minute mark Cromer crossed the line again, and with the conversion led 10-8. Nine minutes later however Valley 2 bounced back with a try but failed to convert, the score 12-10 Valley 2. Then in the final minute of the game Valley 2 scored again taking their lead to 16-10. In other games, North Curl Curl beat Manly Cove 46-14 at Reub Hudson, Valley defeated Belrose 2 by 68-0 at Lionel Watts, Forestville was successful over Avalon by a score of 20 to 10 at Hitchcock Park, and at Lake Park Narrabeen won over Christian Brothers 26-14. Meantime on Friday night Narraweena caused another upset to down 2003 premiers Belrose 22-14 at Lionel Watts . |

Asquith Rugby League In Shock Over Sudden Death Of Andrew Ford
Asquith Rugby League is in shock this weekend over the sudden death of Andrew Ford, the coach of the Asquith side in the Manly A Grade competition up until and including last year. Andrew died of a heart attack on Friday (July 15 2004). He had no history of heart problems but was rushed to hospital after feeling unwell at work. Two doctors who worked on him failed to revive him. He was 36 years old, and married with one child. A minute's silence was observed prior to the Asquith vs. Harbord Under 16s game at Harbord Park Sunday (July 18 2004), an event mirrored at all games involving Asquith sides this weekend, right up to the A Grade who played the Auburn Warriors at Waitara Oval on Sunday. Asquith are currently equal first with Wentworhtville in the Parramatta A Grade competition having won 10 games and lost one. The Club is unusual in that it has an involvement in three districts. Sides up until Under 12s play in North Sydney, the Under 12s to Under 19s play in the Manly competition, and the A and A Reserve Grade sides are this year playing in the Parramatta League for the first time. They previously played in the Manly competition. |

Narraweena A Grade Down Valleys In Final Seconds At Beverly Job
Narraweena came from behind to score a try on full time and win the game of the day against Valley at Beverly Job Sunday (July 18 2004). The local team wrapped up the tight encounter 22-18. The game was a complete turnaround from the previous week when Valleys defeated Narraweena in another clincher 12-10. In the earlier game Cromer defeated a tenacious Narraweena 2 by 26-14. All A Grade games were played in freezing and windy conditions, the worst for many seasons. At Lionel Watts Belrose edged out Narrabeen in another exciting encounter to win 30-24. Belrose 2 however went down to Cromer 2. Over at Forestville Oval North Curl Curl beat the local team Forestville 30 to 4, while at Nolans 13 Christian Brothers won over Manly Cove. The Cove side had a player sent from the field about 10 minutes into the second half. For referee Rob Peard it was his first send off in three seasons. Meantime at Harbord Park Valley 2 extended a 12-6 half-time lead over Avalon to go on and win 34-14. Avalon scored a try literally on the final second of the game to bridge the gap. |

Valleys Down Cromer In Tight Game At Harbord Park
Traditional A Grade rivals Valleys and Cromer met Sunday (June 27 2004) at Harbord Park. Valleys led 2-0 at half-time in a good physical game, marred though by poor ball-handling by both sides. With fifteen minutes to go in the second half Cromer equalised with a penalty goal and the score was 2-2. Two minutes later the local side touched down and converted to lead 8-2. Five minutes later Valleys touched down again to extend the lead to 12-2, but in the remaining minutes Cromer stormed back and with a converted try closed the gap to 12-8, the final score. Cromer was reduced to 12 men for the final minutes of the game as Luke Fittock, a former Manly Ref, left the field believing he had been sent off. Referee Dave Lombardo confirmed after the game he had simply waved him away. Meantime at Nolans 1 Narraweena 50 defeated Christian Brothers 10, while at Lionel Watts Belrose beat Valleys 2 by 48-17. Valleys 2 led at half-time by 16-14 before being overcome in the second half. Belrose 2 went down to Forestville, also at Lionel Watts, the score being 42-10. At Nolans 13 Narraweena 2 overcame a spirited Manly Cove side 40-12, while at Hitchcock Park Narrabeen beat Avalon 28-16. |

Manly Warringah Win Tight Encounter With Visiting British Amateur Rugby League Side
The Manly A Grade represntative side, which included ex-Wakefield Trinity star Steve Watene and first grader Tai Lavea, came up against the touring British Amateur Rugby League Lions team at Brookvale Oval Tuesday night (June 22 2004). A nervous opening by the tourists, who were forced to defend their own line with an early dropout, saw them go 6-0 down after ten minutes. The Lions then lost the ball on their own 20 metre line and on the second tackle second rower Nathan Shattle took the pass from the play the ball to crash through from ten metres. Maika Felise added the extras. A tight, physical and fast game ensued. Manly led the visitors 12-4 at half-time and notched up a converted try midway through the second half to lead 18-4. The Brits fought on tenaciously and with five minutes remaining British Lions substitute Gary Weymes crashed through four Manly defenders for a deserved try and Paul Toole added the extras to make it 18-10. On the next attack Weymes put a superb pass to centre John McMullen who made a 30 metre break, however his offload was intercepted by Manly. From the next play the local side counter-attacked and Felise sent John Mitchell through a large hole for the final points in the last minute. The final score 22-10. Referee Dave Lombardo handled proceedings, with support from Greg Diews and Ralph Mills. In the Under 15s curtain-raiser North Curl Curl after being down 12-4 at half-time overcame a spirited Manly Cove side to win 36-20. Danielle Berry was in the centre with Bevan Bourke and David Liuzzo on the lines. |

Cromer In Shock 38-16 Win Over Valleys
Cromer bounced back on the weekend to easily overcome the more favoured Valleys side at Harbord Park. The game Sunday (May 30 2004) resulted in a 38-16 win to the Kingfishers, with the visitors controlling the game from the outset. Midway through the second half a Valleys player was sent from the field. For referee Shane Charman it was only the second send-off of his career. In the earlier game it was another upset when Forestville defeated Valley 2 by 16 to 12. At Hitchcock Park Belrose beat Avalon 46-0. Narraweena won on a forfeit by Cromer 2, while Narraweena 2 defeated Belrose 2 at Beverly Job by 56 to 6. Meantime Christian Brothers overcame a spirited Manly Cove side at Nolans 1 to win 48-20, while North Curl Curl defeated Narrabeen 26-16 at Lake Park. |

Trivia Night A Big Success
Last Saturday May 22, a group of approximately 25 members gathered at the Christian Bros Club House to participate in what will hopefully be an event which will grow in the future, that being a trivia and entertainment night. I was joined by two of my associates Mr. Tony Dosen and Mr. Bret Metcalfe in our roles as the executive of The Wallace Sports Commentary Team and the three of us took charge over 4 rounds of trivia as well as some light hearted entertainment between the rounds. John McEvoy looked after the food and drink requirements of all who were there and organised a formidable
feast of chicken and salad together with dessert later in the evening. As far as the results were concerned the younger members of the association
inflicted a decisive one point thrashing upon their more senior counterparts. There is still a 'dispute' pending on the official result with
President Rob Peard carrying on like rooster over the name of the white part of an egg. I can report to the membership that his complaint is currently being dealt with by the CRC of WMMI ( the Complaints Review Committee of Wallace Multi Media International ) and it will receive its due
consideration. All jokes aside, thank you to those who came and contributed to the night and to the Christian Bros Club for allowing us the use of their facilities for the evening. (Frank Samyia Social Secretary)

Belrose Edges Out Valleys To Win 20-16
In the A Grade match of the round at Harbord Park Sunday (May 23 2004), the 2003 Premiers Belrose inched past Valleys in the final stages to win 20-16. Earlier Valleys 2 beat Belrose 2 by 50 to 4. At Beverly Job Cromer put in another disappointing performance, following last weekend's shock 60-6 loss, to go down to Narraweena 44-6. Cromer was reduced to 12 men after a player was sent from the field. Narraweena 2 also won the curtain-raiser, defeating Cromer 2 by 32 to 14. At Reub Hudson North Curl Curl beat Manly Cove 44-6, while at Lake Park Narrabeen eclipsed Christian Brothers 25-18. At Hitchcock Park Avalon overcame Forestville to win 32-14. The sides were just two points apart for most of the game with the score at 10-8 at half-time and with 15 minutes to go, before Avalon finally got the upper hand. |

Manly Football Club To Be Taken Over By Delmege In $3.5 Million Deal
District club members will vote on a new privatisation deal that gives major sponsor Max Delmege a controlling stake in the Sea Eagles.
Under the proposal, which has been approved by the Manly board, Delmege will purchase 62.5 per cent of the club for $3.5 million.
In return, he will receive 3.5 million shares in a new company called Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Limited, with the existing football club taking another two million shares and Penn Sports buying 100,000 shares at $1 each.
Included in the agreement, which will be put to members at an extraordinary general meeting on June 3, is that:
* the club remains known as Manly Warringah Sea Eagles;
* the colours be maroon and white; and
* all home games be played at Brookvale Oval.
Members were told in an information package mailed out this week that it was envisaged that majority control would eventually return to the football club through the issue of preference shares.
During time, Delmege intends to sell down his shareholding to 15 per cent, with the football club aiming to raise $1 million per year through membership.
The Sea Eagles hope to increase the number of football club members from about 500 to more than 5000 during the next five years.
Manly Leagues Club will continue to provide an annual funding grant of $1 million.

Valleys Down Cromer 16-10 At St Matthews Farm
In the game of the round in the A Grade, Valleys edged out Cromer in a hard fought encounter at St Matthews Farm Sunday (May 9 2004). Meantime at Reub Hudon, Valleys 2 overcame a determined North Curl Curl side to win in the closing minutes. In a good, physical contest the sides were locked at 18-all, and then 20-all with minutes remaining. Two tries in the final moments though saw the visitors go on to win 32-20. At Lionel Watts Avalon defeated Belrose 2 in a score of 34-10. The local side lost a player in the first 20 minutes, after he was sent off. Narraweena 2 meantime accounted for Christian Brothers 36-18. In a blow to the competition, two second division teams forfeited to Division 1 teams. Manly Cove forfeited to Narraweena, and Forsetville passed on their game with Belrose. |

A Grade The Focus Of General Meeting
In the absence of President Rob Peard who was on a golfing tour, Vice President Phil Brown chaired the meeting on Tuesday night (May 4 2004). Phil, Dave Naughton and Eric Galloway updated members on the A Grade competition, which now comprises four Division 1 teams, Narraweena, Belrose, Valleys and Cromer. Each of these teams will play two of the Division 2 teams during the course of the season. None of the Division 1 teams will play their own Division 2 team. At the end of the season the 4 Division 1 teams will compete in the A Grade grand final. Four Division 2 teams (the top four of all Division 2 teams) will compete in an A Grade second division grand final, while the remaining Division 2 teams will particpate in an A Grade third division grand final. Eric Galloway commented that while what has been decided for 2004 was not ideal, it was time to accept it and move on. Junior League and Club officials meantime are meeting to plan for 2005. At the meeting it was noted that only the final A Grade game each Sunday was to have time-off, whether it be 3pm or earlier. Todd Douglas was unanimously elected Gear Steward of the Association. Chairman Phil Brown thanked Jayson Elkins for his excellent efforts over recent seasons in carrying out the job. Three new members, Lawrence Lawira, Todd Eisenhauer and Tom Berry, were inducted into the association, while Luke Eisenhauer advised of an Eagle Tag competition starting up on Wednesday nights, for which referees are being sought. Anyone interested should contact Luke. |

Valleys Down Narraweena 30-24 In A Grade
In a hard fought game at Beverly Job Sunday (May 2 2004) Valleys wore down the local team to win 30-24. At the same ground North Curl Curl upset the 2003 Premiers, Narraweena 2, to win by the same scoreline, 30-24. At Nolans 1 in a tight game, Belrose 2 overcame Christian Brothers on the bell to win 20-18. A penalty goal after the full time bell had sounded clinched the game for Belrose 2. At Nolans 13 Forestville and Manly Cove met again despite having played last weekend. The score however was different. Last week Forestville won 70-nil. Sunday at half time the score was 10-all, as Manly Cove welcomed nine new players into their ranks. However in the second half the local side faded, and Forestville went on to win 46-10. Meanwhile at Lake Park, Narrabeen easily accounted for Valley 2 50-10. |

Narraweena Edge Out Belrose In Tight Finish, And Valleys Hold Off Fast Finishing Cromer
The 2003 A Grade premiers Belrose were beaten at the post in a fast finishing affair at Lionel Watts on Friday night (April 23 2004). Narraweena got the upper hand early and led 20-6 at half-time. Belrose however stormed home and with a minute to go had overpowered Narraweena to lead 24-20. Then in the final seconds of the game, the visitors scored a try in the corner, and to the juibation of their supporters it was converted, clinching the game for Narraweena 26-24. In the game prior, the 2003 premiers Narraweena2 doowned Belrose. Meantime, on Saturday night (April 24 2004) at St Matthews Farm, Valleys, in their match against Cromer, opened up a 16-4 lead at the break - thanks to 3 tries, including a 50 metres intercept. Cromer charged back in the second half with better ball control, and the scores were tied at 16-16 with twenty minutes to go. A sweeping backline movement by Valley with six minutes remaining saw them score a great try and hold on to win a good contest 20-16. In the curtain-raiser, Cromer2 met Valley2. This was a close but lacklustre game, Cromer2 led 8-6 at half time. There it remained until a late try from Cromer2 saw the score go out to 14-6. Despite Valley2 crossing with a minute left they had left their run too late. Final Score Cromer2 14 Valley2 10. Both games were played in front of a healthy and vocal crowd. Also on Saturday night (April 24 2004) at Forestville Oval the local A Grade team easily accounted for Manly Cove. The tone for the game was set in the opening seconds as Forestville scored a try from 9 seconds form the start, after having kicked off. The local side led 36-0 at the break, and despite a spirited Manly Cove fight back early in the second half, Forestville, completely dominating possession went on to win 70-0. In other news, in the Unders 17s Sunday (April 25 2004), Todd Douglas sent a player off in the Belrose Vs. Nth Curl Curl game at Lionel Watts. Bevan Bourke and Nathan Hogan each sent players from the field as well. |

Kiwis Get Their Choice Of Ref For Anzac Test
The Kiwis have secured one minor victory ahead of an Anzac test that is not expected to provide much in the way of glory for New Zealand league (Sorry Todd). The rank outsiders have at least got the referee they wanted for tonight's (April 23 2004) clash - NRL League whistler Sean Hampstead. Hampstead, who officiated during the Kiwis' surprise 30-16 win over the Kangaroos at North Harbour Stadium last October, was the New Zealand Rugby League's clear preference. Tim Mander is rated the NRL's No 1, but the NZRL overlooked him and the other candidate, Steve Clark, who got offside with the Kiwis for his officiating during the drawn series with Great Britain in 2002. While the NZRL has gained this concession, former leading referee Bill Harrigan said politics should not come into play when the match official was selected. "I'm happy for Sean that he's been handed the post, but I have to say I still can't stomach the politics when it comes to appointing test referees. It degrades the enormity of the occasion." Harrigan, who retired after last year's NRL grand final, said Mander, as the No 1, should have been an automatic selection for the test. "If you're No 1 in the game, the test job should be yours but that's not how it works." Harrigan was critical of New Zealand's right to discuss and debate a panel of referees supplied by the Australian Rugby League before a decision was made. "In this case New Zealand selected Sean and there's no doubt they believe he will be better suited to their style of play. "The only point that needed to be discussed is which country the referee is coming from. When that was decided, the top whistleblower gets the job." Hampstead will be hoping for a better reception tonight after being spat on by an angry Manly fan last Sunday.

Belrose Overcome Cromer While Valleys Accounts For Narraweena
In the A Grade Sunday last year's premiers Belrose made heavy weather of it in the early stages, in their encounter with Cromer at St. Matthews Farm. Only two points separated the two at half-time when Belrose led 12-10. The lead was increased to six points within a minute of the second half when Belrose scored, a mirror event of the first half. Shortly after though Cromer scored and converted and the two sides were tied 16-all. While it looked as though the home side was going to overhaul the premiers, the opposite occurred and Belrose careered away to win 38-16. The game was preceded by a minute's silence for Belrose Captain Josh Stuart's son who died on Easter Saturday at the age of just 10 days, and a life member of Cromer who died earlier in the year. Earlier Berose 2 just edged out Cromer 2 20-16. Meantime at Harbord Park Valleys A Grade easily accounted for Narraweena 38-10. Valley 2 also won, defeating last year's A Reserve Grade premiers, Narraweena 2. The score was 36-10. Forestville with only 12 men overcame North Curl Curl at Reub Hudson. North Curl Curl too was reduced to 12 men when a player was sent off. The final score was 30-14. At Hitchcock Park Avalon easily won over Manly Cove. |

Belrose Edge Out Valleys In Thriller At Lionel Watts
The 2003 Premiers eclipsed Valleys in a hard fought encounter at Lionel Watts Sunday (April 4 2004). With just minutes to go Belrose was under pressure, but a converted try just near the bell clinched the game 22-18. Meantime at Bevely Job Narraweena overcame Cromer to win 14-6. In the second division last year's premiers Narraweena were downed by Cromer, while Valleys took care of Belrose. Conditions at all grounds Sunday were poor with torrential rain for most of the morning making the condition of grounds poor. |

Active Referees Seminar Takes Centre Stage
Rob Peard presented the annual Seminar for active referees immediately following the General Meeting on Tuesday night (March 30 2004). Rob ran an interactive session which caught the attention of members, highlighting the contributions of members to the association and what is expected by members of the association. Loyalty, guidance, encouragement, recruitment, development, appointments, grading, enjoyment, camaraderie, welfare, opportunities, training, and coaching ranked amongst the expectations of the Association, along with the Dave Liuzzo-sponsored debate on the 'free whistle'. On the other side of the ledger members highlighted loyalty, availability, reliability, appropriate behaviour (on and off the field), presentation, punctuality, respect for the advisory board, standards, consistency, 110% effort, fitness, attendance and effort at training, honesty, knowledge of the rules, support for social functions, attendance at meetings, and notification of unavailability with at least a week's notice, as the contributions members should be making to the association. The lively session concluded with Rob reminding members they should be lining up their goals for the 2004 season. A BBQ was held after the session, thanks to the efforts of Frank Samyia and Rocky Davis. |

Trainers Big Day Out
Sunday 8th February 2004 was the date for the traditional Trainers Big Day Out, the reward for all the hard work put in at training over the previous year. Following the white water rafting and trip to Jamberoo of previous years was the more sedate steam train/ferry cruise on the Central Coast Broadwater.
The day began at Manly Wharf, where due to some logistical problems (ie not being able to read a timetable) about 15 hardy souls waited around for about 45 minutes for the next ferry to Circular Quay. Once at the Quay to catch a City Circle train to Central to meet up with the rest of the bunch, entertainment was provided by City Rail in the form of a punch up between a ticket collector and a fare evader. The ticket collector won a narrow points decision and turned the evader over to the local constabulary.
At Central, it was all aboard the historical 3801 Limited steam train, except it was a diesel, as steam trains aren’t allowed to operate in times of high fire danger, which it was on Sunday. A number of travelers almost missed the train due to the very important task of acquiring suitable liquid refreshments for the thirsty bunch. Diewsy and his band of merry men came through and off we went to Woy Woy.
A short walk to the pier saw us all board the Lady Kendall II for a very pleasant cruise around the Broadwater, punctuated by a great lunch and more refreshments.
Then it was back on the train for Central and a necessary pit stop to watch the end of the Aussie innings in the 1 day final in the pub, and home to a good night’s rest. All in all, it was a very pleasant, relaxing day and once again sincere thanks must go to David Jay for organizing the event and again trying to inject a bit of fun and variety in to our social activities.

Training Underway Tuesdays At South Curl Curl Beach
Training officially began on Tuesday 3 February for referees for the 2004 season. A good roll up of between 16-18 on both days so far shows just how keen everyone is to get into the thick of it again. David Jay is again providing the variety and fun by taking advantage of the remaining daylight saving and South Curl Curl Beach is the venue at 6.30pm.
There are some keen new recruits in John Cairns, Nick Monte and Tom Berry (brother of Danielle) who hopefully will be gaining their prelim tickets in time to do some trials and Simon Grabham, a Level 2 referee transferring down from Newcastle. Welcome guys and we hope your association is a long and happy one.
To all who haven’t yet got in the groove, now is the time to come and see just how much you may need to do before you get back on the paddock. Hope to see a lot more of you there next Tuesday, and all the Tuesdays to come.

President Rob Peard Goes On The Record Over Beacon Hill Claims
The article referring to the Beacon Hill Rugby League team “Bad news as Bears A grade side folds” in the Manly Daily on Saturday January 31 2004, provoked both sadness and anger for me. Sadness, because Beacon Hill appear to be yet another victim of the “blame culture” so prevalent in our society today, and anger because the article bore little resemblance to the facts associated with this matter.
Beacon Hill A grade was indeed a formidable and skillful team over the last few years. Fortunately for Rugby League, the Manly Warringah A grade competition is widely regarded as arguably the strongest in the Sydney Metropolitan area, a commendable achievement when one considers the population base of the Northern Beaches in comparison with the southern and western suburbs of Sydney. Consequently, there is a number of outstanding A grade teams in this district and unfortunately Beacon Hill never seemed to be able to come to terms with the fact that they may simply be beaten by a better team on the day. To blame “refereeing decisions and judiciary rulings” is symptomatic of the blame culture.
Had the journalist responsible for the article bothered to contact anyone from the Manly Warringah Rugby League Referees Association, she would have been informed of some of the facts. The primary responsibility of a referee (of any sport) is to ensure the safety of all players. The referee coaching and development program in place in the Manly Warringah Association requires all A grade games to have a member of the Referees’ Advisory Board in attendance. Part of the structure of the program is for all penalties and reasons for the penalties to be logged in the Advisory Board report of the game. An analysis of those reports shows that a significant proportion of penalties awarded against Beacon Hill throughout the season were for foul play, hence the attendances at the judiciary whose decisions also seemed to cause them some grief.
There was also an occasion when the referee was threatened with physical violence by a couple of Beacon Hill supporters when he returned to his car after their team had been comprehensively outplayed by a side one player short for all but 3 minutes of the game. Apparently, it was the referee’s fault that they failed to capitalise on their advantage. And following the preliminary final, where again Beacon Hill were simply beaten by a far superior team on the day, the referee’s parents were subjected to the cowardly act of receiving a foul and abusive phone call at 2 o’clock in the morning, with a follow up one the next afternoon.
They also failed to mention that some of the “dramas from last year” were self inflicted. Such as 2 players being unable to play in the finals series due to the failure of the club to register them in accordance with the Junior League competition rules.
Beacon Hill weren’t the only ones who “had simply had enough” – referees were also fed up with being constantly subjected to abuse from some of their players and supporters.
The simple fact is that Beacon Hill is reluctant to take responsibility for their own actions and seek to apportion the blame for their lack of success. They also appear to fail to appreciate that Rugby League is just a game played by and controlled by people wanting to engage in a healthy, safe, competitive sport. Compared to the tragic events unfortunately occurring throughout the world on a daily basis, the outcome of a football game pales into almost embarrassing insignificance.
I think very few people who love the game of Rugby League in the Manly Warringah District and work tirelessly for its development will lose much sleep over the demise of Beacon Hill A Grade. Indeed, the dissemination of their players to other clubs, who will hopefully instill a greater degree of discipline and respect for officials, will only strengthen a competition already highly regarded for its outstanding quality. Two Rule Changes Announced For The 2004 Season
The Rugby League International Federation met Sunday February 1 2004 in Sydney and approved amendments to the International Laws of the Game, which were put forward by the NRL Rules Committee and endorsed by the Australian Rugby League. The first involves the tossing of the coin at the start of a game. The team winning the toss now has the option of choosing which end of the field to defend, or alternatively may elect to kick-off to commence play. If the team winning the toss elects to kick-off, the choice of ends reverts to the team losing the toss. The second is when an attacking player is held-up in his opponents in-goal area and is unable to ground the ball. Play will be restarted by the player in possession playing the ball 10 metres out from the goal line directly opposite the point where he was held-up. The tackle count will then continue in the normal manner (ie. if a player is held-up on tackle 3, play will resume with a play-the-ball 10 metres from the goal line and the following tackle will be tackle 4). Note that if a player in possession is held-up on the sixth tackle, there is no change to the existing rule.
