V8s a big success, Fiji A the inaugural winner

Sixteen teams from New South Wales and Queensland did battle Saturday (February 26 2005)in the inaugural V8s rugby league tournament in Sydney.

In perfect playing conditions, on the two football fields at Harbord Park, the tournament, conducted by Valley United, provided a full day's football which entertained the large crowd that turned out for the occasion. North Ryde, Newtown, Narraweena, Valley, Macksville, Dubbo, Fiji A, and Tugun made it through to the semi-finals, dispensing with Narrabeen, Manly Warringah Police, Belrose, Forestville, North Curl Curl, Manly Cove, and Goodonga. Home team Valley United got through to the final, defeating North Ryde 28-12, while Fiji A overcame Macksville 32-10. Games were eight minutes a half, with one minute for half-time. The number of players in each side was eight. Games were started with a drop kick, kicks at goal had to be drop kicks, and restarts of play at the half-way were by tap kicks. Three man scrums applied. The final was a classic with Fiji A losing a player in the first couple of minutes. The side's Number 6 was sin binned for five minutes for fighting. The over exuberant Fijians lost it again just two minutes later with another mellee resulting in the side's Number 9 also being sin binned for 5 minutes. Another two minutes went by before another Fiji A player, the side's Number 5, was sent off following an incident in general play. Despite being reduced to five men, the Fijian side fought on and just as the side's Number 6 returned to the field, right on half-time, incredibly, the Fiji A side, clinched a try, to lead 4-0 at the break. Valley retaliated immediately after the start of the second half to score under the posts and, with the conversion, led 6-4. Minutes later though, Fiji A responded with a try out wide and took an 8-6 lead. Valley crossed the line shortly after but unfortunately for them, the ball was knocked on in the process of a try being scored. An altercation in a play-the-ball seconds later saw another Fiji A player lose it. After throwing the ball at an opponent he then chased the opponent and took him down with a tackle and a follow-through swinging arm. He was sent off. A minute or so later Valley looked set to win the match before a Fiji player snatched the last pass of a backline movement that would have won Valley the game. With no more scoring, the visitors ran out winners 8-6. The entire tournament went without a hitch with all teams playing the game in good spirits. The incidents involving the Fiji A team disappointed those in attendance, and the organisers, but they failed to dent the awesome success of the event. Dave Lombardo refereed the game, while Nathan Hogan, and Greg Kidd, were on the lines. Peter Kelly, the principal organiser on behalf of Valley United, and the club's major sponsor the Harbord Hotel, presented a cheque for $4,000 to the winning team, while Valley received a cheque for $1,000 as the runners-up. The other finalists, Macksville and North Ryde each received a cheque for $400, while Julian Vertely of the North Ryde Club was named player of the tournament. Peter thanked the referees for their involvement throughout the day. The referees themslves thought the tournament an outstanding success and were very much appreciative of the efforts by the Valley Club in organising the day, and in particular the support to referees.
