A Merry Christmas to Members

All the best to all members and their families this Christmas and New Year period. Have a restful and safe off season, good luck to those that have been invited to train with the graded squad and those working hard in prep for next season!

We'll see active members for pre-season training at the beach before Daylight Savings expires (but let's have a break first!)

Peard, Lombardo, Elkins, Smith and Noyen, Award Winners for 2006

(14th October 06)

The Ladies day for 2006 could not have been held in nicer (or hotter) conditions. The Fresh Ketch, the venue for the Manly Warringah Referee's presentation day, had a scenic backdrop of The Spit where the serenity was bliss.

To open proceedings, Master of Ceremonies, David Jay welcomed all to the Fresh Ketch and invited the youngest, most elegible bachelor, Todd Smith to give a toast to the Ladies. Todd, on behalf of the members thanked Mothers, Sisters, Wives, Girlfriends, Partners and Miscellaneous for having to put up with the highs and lows for the year.

The President was then invited to welcome guests from other associations. Peardy said that as referees we don't make many friends, so it is nice to know that there are other associations that can share a common interest and experience to what we go through. Associations represented included, New South Wales, the ARLRA, Penrith, Cronulla and Illawarra. And as David Jay said, the Manly Warringah association was happy to welcome them into "God's Country".

The first award presented was the sponsor AAMI Award, given to the referee deemed to shown the greatest potential as a referee over the year. This year was won by Matt Noyen. This year, Matt has been a referee in the under 19s and A-grade competition. He was appointed to the under 19s minor semi final and progressed to earn the Under 17s Grand Final. Matt was also appointed to the under 17s representative fixture between South Sydney and Manly and recently been nominated for the Junior rep squad next year. On receiving the award from a representative of the AAMI company, Matt thanked everyone concerned and said he was glad he was receiving something back from AAMI after paying his premiums on time, everytime.

The second award, Clive Rogers - for the Best Junior Referee of the Year, was awarded to Todd Smith. In his second year of refereeing, Todd was appointed to the Under 11s grandfinal and under 19s grandfinal line. He had been refereeing mod and international on Saturday and regularly appointed to A-grade touch lines on Sunday. This year, Todd was appointed to the Under 13s Manly V Norths Development trial and ran in assistance in the representative fixtures between Manly and South Sydney. Finishing the year as the highest ranked junior member, Todd was presented the Clive Rogers award for Best Junior.

The third award is a lesser prized award as it holds more of a reputation for the "best" scorekeepers. This award, sponsored by the Harbord Bowling club, was first presented last year and is awarded to the winners of the annual Mad Monday Gold day. This year, it was won by a team that had apparently scored 68 under par (the figures were still in dispute). Todd Smith and the Family Eisenhauers (Luke, Todd and Matt) were presented the award. And such explaination to how they managed to score 68 under par, Todd Eisenhaeur's explaination shall be quoted in its entirety: "How's it going?" - Mmmm, Well done Todd...

The next award presented was the Frank Walsh Most Improved Referee. This year, the recipient boasts a portfolio of achievements that leaves him in good stead to move onto bigger and better things. Jayson Elkins, winner of this award, finished last year as the Under 17s grandfinal referee, definitely an achievement in itself, but this year was continually in great form running in the A-grade competition every week and finishing with the A-reserve grade grand final. It was said a number of times by the Director of Referees it was a very close contest between him and the A-grade grandfinal referee. Jayson has also been appointed to at least five Jersey Flegg centres, three of which preceeded the Friday night game. During the second school term he refereed the MCC A-grade competition played on a Thursday afternnon and was given the Grandfinal. These games all top off a remarkable Junior representative season before the Manly competition had even begun! Elko refereed everyweek at the S.G. Ball level, and finished with the Harold Matthews Semi final (placing him third amongst the NSW Junior rep squad). In presenting the award it was made known that Elko, (along with Greg and Danielle - the other two junior rep referees in Manly) had been invited with a dozen others to train with the Premier League Graded Squad. Jayson on receiving the award thanked his wife, the Advisory board members, Rob Peard, David Jay and the association for assisting him through the season.

The next award for the Referee of the year is traditionally presented by the previous winner to the subsequent winner. But again, David Lombardo has defied this tradition winning this award for the fifth consecutive time. David finished last year as number one referee and equalled the record with four consecutive grandfinals at Manly. It was at presentation last year (as he recalls in his speech) that he was approached with the challenge to referee in five and break the record. As he said, he decided to "put all his eggs in his basket" and go all out and aim for this goal. David was met with fierce competition particularly by the likes of Jayson Elkins and emerged with the A-grade minor semi finals before being appointed to the A-grade grandfinal. Throughout the course of the year, David was also appointed to two Representative fixtures. The first was the A-grade between Manly and Parramtta and the second to the Manly and Souths John O'Neill Shield game.

In his speech, he thanked his Girlfriend Cassey for providing him the support throughout the year and for "putting up with him during the season". Dave thanked David Jay for teaching him new things about refereeing and giving him guidence throughout the five years. Dave acknowledged the hard work put in by Peardy during the year, saying Rob leaving his post as President next year will leave a big hole in the association. As part of his inspiration, Dave said that it was Addie Flippance that exemplified what could be achieved as a referee, and "though he won't win an award, Addie shows us that we can make goals and work hard to achieve them". David also thanked the Advisory board members for giving their time up and to other referees for their efforts and their support especially when the going got tough!

The next two awards are undoubtedly an understatement of what their recipient has put into the association over this year (and all years he has been involved in refereeing). The winner of the Bill Grono award and the Danny Stewart trophy (presented for a contribution to rugby league as deemed by the executive and by the members) was presented to President Rob Peard. As previously announced, Peardy will be standing down next year as President, leaving an enormous hole to fill for members next year. Peardy in his speech thanked his wife and said it was not easy to have to many commitments every weekend and during the week. Peardy thanked the executive, Philip Brown, David Jay, Greg Diews and David Naughton for their consistent support through this year and last, and acknowledged the previous executive members that he had worked alonside in his eleven year stint on the executive. Peardy said to have three members in Junior reps being invited into the Graded squad (joining Langy and Walshy) must mean that as an association we must be doing something right. He said that he has seen and worked with some of the best referees who really had the potential to go all the way. Peardy said when these referees do make it to the big time he would like to come away with the idea that he had something to do with guiding them along the way. Peardy said it was the nurturing of Junior referees that were the future for this association, in the juniors we already have, there is much potential, again much ability to make the big time. Rob said it was now time for other members to step up and take the association into the future and would hope that he had left the association in as good state as he had found it when he became president.

Peardy's effort was given a rowdy reception and it definitely could not be denied his work next year will be missed.

Just a few lucky dip prizes won during the day, Danielle won the major award for a dinner or lunch for two (valued up to $150) at the Fresh Ketch. Jayson Elkins won a Bowls bag donated by Rocky and the Harbord Bowling Club. Mrs Smith won a Warringah Mall gift voucher and Mrs Walsh won an Umbrella.

From the Association to Rob Peard, Thank You

(12 September 06)

It what could only be described as a sad day for Manly Junior Rugby League, President of the district Referee's Association, Rob Peard has announced he will stand down from the role next year.

Peardy has been actively involved for the last eleven years, giving up every Saturday and Sunday for games then attending Monday night Junior League meetings then backing up on Tuesdays for our Training sessions. Then add on top of that President's meetings and Coaching courses just to name a few. It would not do him justice to describe all the activities and the level of contribution Peardy has had in them!

Rob has made himself well known around the footy circles, actively fighting for us referees as well as putting the interest of the Juniors and of Rugby League ahead of all others. Rob has given plenty to this association and to the Manly District Junior Rugby League community. He has an awesome rapport with not just other referees but also with players. I know Peardy's ability to challenge referees, while also coaching them and affirming their ability is exemplary of this as well.

Peardy, from the Association Thank you for all your dedication, we're the better for it (and with the new gear you organised this year we look better too!). There are not enough accolades that can do justice to the work and effort you have put into Rugby League.

All the best, next year. We will see Peardy running around reffing games, but it must be acknowledged that we will be worse off without Rob's strong, ongoing support and involvement. Many would agree that there aren't many people like Rob.

3 out of 3 and bonus points for Valley

(3rd September 2006)

Valley have walked away with not only the major prize in the Top grade but have won all their contested grades this year. The club defeated Narrabeen in the A-grade, Manly Christian Brothers in the A-reserve grade and Narraweena in the under 19s.

The Grandfinals were played at Brookvale Oval in bliss conditions, with the sun radiating very early in the day and temperatures only increasing until the final match played at 3:00 pm.

In the first game, refereed by Rocky Davis with the assistance of Simon Grabham and David Naughton, North Sydney Brothers took on the Minor Premiers Belrose. The last time these two sides met was in the Major Semi Final where Belrose scored three minutes from full time to win by six points. This game was again headed down a similar path. Scoring tries tit-for-tat, the lead was constantly changing and at no point was either side out of contention. In the last minute of play, Belrose scored out wide and had a conversion attempt to draw level. This seemed Deja Vu to last year, when a similar set of circumstances saw them play out an extra time game against Harbord. However, this time the touch judges waved the attempt away. Understandably shattered, the kicker should take heart that the attempt was not an easy one. North Sydney Brothers winning the Under 16s title by 30 points to 28.

Next game up was the Under 17s grandfinal between North Curl Curl Knights and Berowra Wallabies. Berowra had finished the season as Minor premiers, however North Curly defeated them in the Major Semi final to earn themselves a week off and direct entry into the big game. The North Curly kick off to start the game saw the ball trickle over the dead ball line, and that just set up what would unfold in the match. After one minute, Curly were in for their first try, and when Berowra could not retain possession - drop balls, kick charge downs and attempted intercepts, Curly had started their roll on and put on the points. It was 12-nil after 7 minutes and Berowra had not completed a set of six. Then another two quick tries saw the score board read 22-nil after 17 minutes. Berowra scored one back just before the break and at half time the deficit was 16 points. Returning after the break, Berowra looked like they could make a match of it, however their run of tries was halted momentarily when Curly again put points on the board. The final score reading North Curl Curl premiers for 2006, defeating Berowra 38 points to 16. Refereeing the match was Matt Noyen withe the assistance of Gary Greco and Todd Eisenhauer.

The heat definitely did not die down for the next fixture and all involved seemed to hope for an extra time game to delay the kick off, and hopefully delay it enough so cooler conditions might sweep through. Valley United had finished Minor Premiers in the under 19s and had qualified for the grandfinal two weeks prior when they defeated Narraweena in the Major Semi Final. Last week, Narraweena overcame Asquith to reach this stage of the competition. All year, Valley had dominated with the football and showed discipline in defence as well. This game was played at a high intensity with big hits and long runs. Valley scored incrementally and kicked out to big lead at half time. Early in the second half Narraweena put one in, however that was going to be their only points for the game. Valley dominated the whole game, and took out this game 28 points to 4. The referee for this match was Greg Kidd with Todd Smith and Laurie Lawira running in assistance.

On paper, the next A-reserve game was the match of the day and out there the players didn't disappoint. Christian Brothers had earnt a week off winning their Major Semi final game and last week Valley defeated Avalon to qualify. Brothers started off the match quite slowly and were probably making uncharacteristic mistakes. Valley put on two early tries while Brothers were still finding their feet. But what is to speak of was the finish to the game. Brothers in the last twenty minutes still seemed out of the match and were playing catch up football. But when they put on a couple of tries on the board a bit of self belief returned and saw them gain a roll on, of possession and attack. The game lifted on this alone. Valley, too kept up with this ride and also rose to meet the challenge. The game began a minor see-sawing chain of events where one would score and the other side return fire. Valley however had the last say, scoring and managing to hold off Brothers in the last few seconds. Their second win for their club of the afternoon, Valley over Manly Christian Brothers 26 points to 22. The ever fit Jayson Elkins was appointed to this game with Bevan Bourke and Luke Eisenhauer running in assistance.

The most anticipated game all year, the A-grade grandfinal, the game to close off the season, finally dawned on Brookvale Oval at 3:00pm (yes, we were running according to schedule!). Valley and Narrabeen (along with Forestville and Narraweena) had been setting the standard for the A-grade competition. Valley had finished as minor premiers and qualified for the grandfinal by smashing Narraweena in the major semi finals. Narrabeen had a tougher road to the big game, losing in the qualifying final (week 1) before having two wins to get to the grandfinal. Turmoil had hit Narrabeen earlier in the week when it was brought to the attention of the Junior League that an article appeared in the Manly Daily saying their tactics were to go out and bash the opposition. The matter was well sorted, but it did involve some explaining. None the less, Grandfinals are about the football and that is what this game showed. Valley kicked out to a very comfortable lead mid way through the game, however a lack of discipline saw them give away possession and good field position. Narrabeen putting together a few tries on. For Narrabeen it could have felt like Lake Park with a strong support base had set themselves up on the hill and in the stands. The vocal crowd did enjoy the number of tries scored close to them, however it really was Valley from the get go. Narrabeen did make the most of the game and brought it into a respectable scoreline, and gave Valley a fright. Valley however claimed the A-grade trophy 32 points to 24.

The referee, in his fifth consecutive A-grade grandfinal was David Lombardo (a remarkable achievement, not done before in the Association) and his sideline assists Danielle Berry and Greg Kidd. Greg stepping in for Matt Noyen at the last moment and Danielle running the A-grade grandfinal line for the second year in a row. In-goal judges were Frank Samyia and Simon Grabham.

And that ends the 2006 Manly Junior Rugby League Competition.

Have a good Summer!

Comebacks a feature of Saturday Grandfinals

(2nd September 06)

The heat swept across Sydney in what could be described as exhausting conditions to play rugby league.

As the cliche goes, it really was day where dreams were fulfilled. It could not be seen any better than today when young stars of the future really stepped it up and fight when their sides were down.

The Under 13s grandfinal was contested between the Minor Premiers, Belrose and the defending Premiers, Narrabeen. The biggest lead to any side would have been at 10 points to 4, and that didn't last for very long. Both sides were entertaining with the ball and the game went from end to end. Being played at 1:30pm, the players were feeling the heat but managed to put the pace on in each play. The sides went to the break at ten points all. An attempt at field goal late in the first half by Narrabeen falling short.

The Second half was no different to the first. Again tit-for-tat scoring, with tries being scored from all over the park. In the last ten minutes Narrabeen scored a try and converted but Belrose returned fire soon after and the scoreboard saw Belrose leading by two points. With less than two minutes to go, Narrabeen had the task of getting the ball 80 metres. On tackle four, a Narrabeen player was seen breaking the line and finally caught on the twenty. Last tackle, all of the Belrose side was grouped on one side, and when the Narrabeen halfback chose to kick over the top instead of going through the hands many had thought they had butchered their chance. But the kick found open space, with two wingers (one from Belrose and one from Narrabeen) contesting for this ball. The ball sat up nicely for the Narrabeen winger who was much wider than the Belrose player who had come infield. Narrabeen scoring with thirty seconds to go, taking out a grand final written only in fairy tales (24-22).

The under 14s between Cromer and Manly Cove did not seem to be played at a very intense pace, but none the less the finish again proved to be the most exciting part of the game. Cromer scooted way to lead at the half time break by 13-nil (two tries and a field goal). Cove came out with a more determined attitude in the second half, but when Cromer kicked out to a 19-4 lead, all seemed lost. But again, the day was characterised by come backs. Cove got the score back to 19-18 with a conversion attempt to come, from out wide. The Cove kicker had missed on two previous occasions from a similar location, however when it mattered, he managed to slot it in. With less than a minute to go, Manly Cove had managed to scrape away with that victory 20 points to 19.

In the under 15s, we can't speak of a magnificent finish, but we can speak of two sides performing in a high intensity contest. Forestville took early points, but Manly Cove came from behind and held onto their lead. Cove winning 22-18.

Both the under 14s and 15s were rematches of last year grandfinals with very contrasting style games. Both games last year saw Manly Cove roll over their opposition, however this year have seen very competitive games across both age groups. In an earlier game, the under 12s saw Mona Vale continue their dominance in that age group defeating Cromer, but a notable play must be recognised when all seemed over, a Cromer player intercepted the ball and bedazzelled all on the ground streaking away 40 metres to score! Well done mate!

Here ends the junior comp for 2006! Again, grandfinal day proved to be one of the most entertaining set of games seen all year! Apart from a few sun burns and tired bodies games we didn't have many major injuries. Have a good summer!

Referees involved in the day: Looking after the mini games: Brown (7s) and Berry (8s), with Lombardo, Diews, Cridland and Anderson on the lines. In the mod-squad (9-12 respectively): Flippence, Anderson, Peard and Greco, with Lombardo, Brown, Cridland, Diews, Kidd and Elkins in support. And in the International games: Laurie Lawira (13s), Bevan Bourke (14s) and Luke Eisenhauer (15s) with Gary Greco, Rob Peard, Johnny Mac and a late step up for Todd Smith running in support.

Narrabeen and Valley to Battle for Trophy

(27th August 06)

Narrabeen will take on Valley United in Next Week's Grandfinal (Sunday 3rd Septmber) after defeating a gutsy Narraweena side in today's Preliminary Final. Narrabeen kicked into gear late in the match to secure the 14 points to 10 victory. Earlier in the finals campaign, this game was the major semi final at Lake Park where Narraweena edged out Narrabeen (24 points to 14). On both occasions the physical encounter was set up in the forwards with big runs and hard hits. Narraweena were the Premiers last year, but Valley have been the outfit to beat this year.

In the major semi finals played last week, Valley smashed Narraweena 40 points to 6 in a very disciplined effort, while Narrabeen ran away with a victory over Forestville (32-12). Forestville beat Berowra in week one of the finals to qualify for the minor semi final.

Earlier in the day, in the A reserves Valley United too good for Avalon 22 points to 16. Valley will now take on Christian Brothers in what is going to be a very tough close encounter. Both sides have played well in the season proper and finished first (Brothers) and second (Valley). The run through to the big game saw Christian Brothers defeat Valley in the Major semi final, while Valley defeated Avalon twice, once in the qualifier and in the preliminary game.

In the under 19s, Narraweena downed Asquith in an end-to-end match. Asquith took the early lead, however Narraweena hung in there and ran away with a number of tries in the second half. The Hawks dropped off towards the end of the game with Asquith scoring two consolation tries in two minutes to see the score end at 32 points to 30. The finals in the under 19s saw Narraweena run away with the game against Asquith in the qualifying final, Harbord United defeated Manly Cove in Extra time 14-12 in the elimination game (both games played in week one), Valley over Narraweena in the Major semi and Asquith over Harbord in a very close game. Valley United and Narraweena will meet each other in the grandfinal.

In the under 17s, the half time break saw an emergence of a new Berowra side when they piled on points in the second half against a solid Narraweena side. Berowra will now take on North Curl Curl in the grandfinal. In the under 17s finals, North Curly defeated Narrabeen in a very firey clash in week one where two players were dismissed from the field. Also that day Narraweena defeated Manly Brothers by 14 points to 12. In week two, Narraweena defeated Narrabeen while the game played at North Sydney saw North Curl Curl over Berowra.

In the under 16s, the preliminary finals were played over at North Sydney between North Sydney Brothers and Pennant Hills, with NSB victors there. They will now take on Belrose in a rematch of week two of the finals. Belrose finished minor premiers and had week one off. They took on NSB at Harbord Park in week two. With three minutes remaining, scores were level until, unbeknowns to everyone watching the game, Belrose were able to break through the line and score a try. The score finished 30 points to 24 to Belrose. NSB in week one took on Pennant Hills, easily accounting for them that day. In the elimination game Cromer smashed Harbord 30 points to 4, with Harbord's try coming on the full time siren. In week two, Pennant Hills proved too good for Cromer defeating them 34-14.

So games next week (3 September) at Brookvale Oval:
9:00am: Under 16s - Belrose V North Syd Brothers
10:30am: Under 17s - North Curly V Berowra
12 Noon: Under 19s - Valley V Narraweena
1:30pm: A reserves - Christian Bros V Valley
3:00pm: A grade - Valley V Narrabeen

Forestville and Cove to play in Big Clash Next Saturday

(26th August 2006) Forestville came back from a half time deficit to defeat Belrose (in the Under 15s) and set up a grandfinal rematch with Manly Cove in next Saturday's Grandfinal.

The biggest match of today was played at Nolans 13 with high intensity and pace. Belrose struck first with a try coming midway through the first half. The battle was set up front in the forwards running at high pace at each other. When Forestville sustained the attack in the 'roses' 20m zone, they eventually cracked the defence out wide slipping over the line, but a mistake at the kick off saw Belrose immediately take the lead once again. Again after the kickoff the try scoring side failed to hold the ball, but Belrose held off the immediate attack, none the less Ferrets crossed the line to draw level, when they had good field position. A penalty goal right on half time to Belrose saw them up by two at the break (12-10).

The second half was much like the first, hits continued dominate the game while the smaller halves were able to scoot around the middle of the ruck. Forestville scored early from a penalty, and again after Belrose lost the ball racing away to what really was a very shakey lead. Belrose threw everything at the Forestville side. One of the most notable plays came after Forestville won a scrum close to half way, then the Belrose Five-Eighth stole the ball in a one-on-one rake. He managed to run 40 or so metres, but was ruled to have been tackled over the deadball line before grounding the footy. Another lucky escape by the Ferrets was when the Belrose halfback was deemed to have grounded the ball short then lost control after he darted twenty metres weaving in and out of traffic. Forestville managed to hold onto their lead and defeated Belrose by 8 points.

In the run to this game, Belrose defeated Avalon in the first Minor Semi Final and then came from behind to defeat Cromer (the loser of the first semi final) in the second week of semis.

Forestville, defeated Cromer in the first week in the Major took on Manly Cove last Saturday (19th August) at Reub Hudson. Delayed due to a serious injury the game was played under lights. Ferrets lead the match early scoring quick tries, but Cove bounced back taking the lead. A try to the Ferrets late in the match saw the scores draw level at the end of regular time. In the first period of extra time, Cove scored a try and converted early, and likewise in the second period, Cove over Belrose in the second Major semi final 12-nil in Extra time.

Earlier today at Nolans 13, Belrose took out the under 13s game to take on arch rivals Narrabeen in the Grand Final. Belrose were dominant up in the forwards and in the contest of size, the bigger player was always going to break through.

Belrose starved the Mona Vale side of possession, having no more than five sets in the first half, however when they did have the ball Mona Vale did look dangerous, scoring a try after a set of six in the opposition 20. Mona Vale kicking off the second half were fortuitous when the bounce of the ball went their way and were able to put points on in the first set. However, much like the first half Belrose were able to break the line and get the offload to moving players, continually keeping the ball alive running the Mona Vale defence around. Belrose ended up being victors in the 13s.

In the path to the finals, Mona Vale finished the season on a good winning streak, which included a come from behind victory against the second placed side Narrabeen in the last of the regular games. The following week, in the first Minor Semi final (the Under 13s are playing a 3 week finals series) Mona Vale upset Manly Cove setting up today's clash.

Belrose faced Narrabeen last week at Harbord Park in the Major semi final. Both sides started quite flat, however Belrose kicked into gear first but when Narrabeen stepped it up they seemed to fall away again. The game was quite competitive but not played at a very intense rate. Narrabeen managed to slot a field goal through in the second half. Next week's grandfinal will see the Minor Premiers Belrose taking on the defending premiers in Narrabeen.

Over at Nolans 1, the Under 14s was one way traffic to Cromer, the losers of the Major Semi Final (against Manly Cove), when they versed Narrabeen, who had a narrow victory last week over Mona Vale. The score there was 50-4. Next week Manly Cove will play Cromer.

In the under 12 mod games:

12/1s Cromer won today and will take on Mona Vale in a grandfinal rematch of last year. Both sides finished the year on equal points, but Mona Vale taking the minor premiership and defeating Cromer by 42-0 in the major semi final.

12/2s Christian Brothers defeated Narrabeen

That's the wrap for the Saturday Semi Finals and Finals games. All the best to teams competing in Grand Finals next week! And for those that have finished up, enjoy the summer break!

Lights Out, but North Sydney Power Through

The Under 15s development game between Manly and North Sydney played at Reub Hudson (2nd August)was delayed in the 12th minute when lighting ceased to exist. The lights switched off just as Manly were kicking off after conceeding their second try.

North Sydney ran in two early tries before the extended break and were leading 12-nil. When the lights did manage to return, North Sydney continued their dominance in the game breaking the Manly defensive line many times. Manly hit back with a try after a knock on was collected off the boot, but they were comprehensively beaten 46-6.

In earlier games, Manly took out the under 13s clash (28-6) and North Sydney defeated Manly in the under 14s (18-14).

Referees were Todd Smith, Bevan Bourke and Laurie Lawira with the assistance of Scott Chidley and Gary Greco.

Next General Meeting (25th July 06)

Secretary David Naughton has announced the next general meeting of the Manly Warringah Referee's Association will be on the 25th July 2006, at the Harbord Bowling Club, to commence at 6:30 pm.

2006 John O'Niell Shield to South Sydney

The Junior Development games at Brookvale Oval went ahead dispite the downfall of rain earlier in the day (Saturday 15th July 06).

First on was the Under 13s game refereed by Bevan Bourke. South Sydney defeated the Manly side by a close scoreline. In the under 14s, the size of the Souths side proved to be a very intimidating factor that Manly couldn't handle. Manly worked hard to contain their opposition but Souths were very classy all around the field. Souths 54 points to 4. The Under 15s game became an arm wrestle and was a very competitive game. Luke Eisenhauer controlled the match with Laurie Lawira and Todd Smith in support. The game concluded with a 10-all scoreline. In the under 17s, Manly got one back. Refereeing that game was Matt Noyen and in support Ian Rigby and Rob Peard. And in the A-grade, the initial competitiveness died down when South Sydney began running away with that. Referee the A-grade was Matt Noyen (who had to replace an injured Dave Lombardo) and in support Ian Rigby and Rob Peard.

District games continued over the weekend as well. At Lionel Watts, Narraweena were too good for Belrose in A-grade (54 points to 4), Belrose over Weena in the Reserves and a draw in the 16s between Belrose and Avalon. The match of the round was at Lake Park between the top two sides of A-grade. Narrabeen over Valley in that game. At Nolans 1, the match of the round in the reserves saw Christian Brothers end the winning streak of near by competitors Manly Cove. That game saw big hits and very hard running, but the game opened up later in the match and it was Brothers that were able to capitalise and find the gaps, scoring most of their tries from long range attacks. Earlier in the day North Sydney Brothers defeated Cromer in the under 16s. NS Brothers took an early 18-nil, but they had bombed a number of plays close to the line. Cromer in the second half gave them a scare putting 10 quick points on in the first few sets. But Brothers closed out the match, winning 26-16.

Cove upset Avalon

Coming off a cheap forfeit last week, Avalon were looking for a win when they travelled to Nolans 13 (Sunday 9th July 06). It didn't go to script. Cove upsetting one of the fore runners for the premiership in the A reserves, 20 points to 18.
The roars of the crowd (and Elko's whistle) could be heard from the other end of Nolans, where Valley took on Christian Brothers. Valley took an early 2-nil lead after a Brothers player was penalised for his contribution to a fight. The tussle went back and forth, and Brothers eventually broke through for a try off a kick just before half time. In the second half, an 80 metre run by the Brothers full back would have seen a mighty intercept try, however he ran out of steam and was pushed into touch less than one metre away from the goal line. Valley scored one try in the second half, a close one at Nolans 1, Brothers sealing the victory on the siren, winning three tries to one. Earlier in the day, Valley defeated Pennant Hills in the under 19s and Narraweena just over Brothers in the 17s.

At Narraweena, North Sydney Brothers forfeited both A-grade games. And at Lake Park Narrabeen comfortable victors over Belrose.

A few of next week's games remain uncertain, we should know by Monday night/Tuesday on the schedule (rep matches against South Sydney on Saturday may alter Sunday games).

Four weeks until the finals series...

12 man Willoughby side forfeit against Avalon

Avalon was setting up for a big day of football (Sunday 2nd July), but only the under 16s match against Pennant Hills was played. Earlier in the week Berowra forfeited their game against Cove (also to be played at Hitchcock park), leaving the A reserves and under 16s to be played there. However reports say 8 minutes before kick off Willoughby had forfeited the match, leaving many fans disgruntled. This was to be Avalon's last home game as well.

Over at Forestville, no controversies of that nature as Narraweena defeated Forestville in the main game. Likewise at Lionel Watts Valley over Belrose in the A-grade.

At St Matty's farm, in the under 15s Cromer smashed Berowra by the Mercy Rule, Cromer 16s over Narrabeen and a fast/competitive 17s saw North Curly over Narraweena.

Elko lands Opens MCC Grand Final

A congratulations to Jayson Elkins on being appointed to the A-grade Metropolitan Catholic Colleges Grand Final this Thursday (29th June 06).

The MCC competition runs on Thursday afternoon during the second school term, schools competing: St Leos Wahroongah, La Salle Bankstown, Marcellin Randwick, Marist Kogarah, Marist Pagewood, Christian Brothers Lewisham, De La Salle Ashfield and Marist College North Shore.

Many schools have junior rep players from a range of clubs participating, making for good footy.

The Grandfinal will be at Leichhardt Oval, kick off at 2:15pm with Minor Premiers Marist College North Shore taking on second placed Marist College Kogarah.

Avalon run away with match against Belrose

Up at Hitchcock Park (Sunday 25th June 06) a very physical opening half saw Avalon run away with the second half and the match. No points were scored in the opening 20 (or so) until Avalon broke the deadlock. Avalon went in again before half time, the scoreline reading 8-nil.

Belrose looked to get off to a good start in the second half, scoring first in the corner, however that was as close as the scoreline got. Avalon tumbled their way over the line in a scoring frenzy that saw them put on 38 points. The closing 10 minutes saw no points scored. The final score 46-4 to the home side.

Earlier in the day at Hitchcock park, the under 16s saw Cromer defeated Avalon in a close contest while Belrose (16s) defeated Narrabeen by the mercy rule.

A reminder to all referees that there is a General meeting on Tuesday night (27th Jun 06)

Next General Meeting (27th June 2006)

Secretary David Naughton has announced the next general meeting of the Manly Warringah Referees Association will be on the 27th June 06, at the Harbord Bowling Club, commencing at 6:30pm.

Tuesday will be a busy night at Judiciary

Resuming competition games after last weekend's wash out, games were held at Lake Park, Beverly Job, Harbord Park and Denzil Joyce (Sunday 18th June 06). At Lake Park, it was Narrabeen verse Berowra in all three grades (16s, A res and A-grade), an all in brawl ruined the first game played there (under 16s), with two players being sent from the field and two more in the sin bin. Narrabeen eventually took that game, after what people have commented was a disappointing incident. In the A-grade, reports say Narrabeen were victorious there in what sounded like a pretty good clash.

At Harbord Park, the first game on was the under 19s between Valley and Asquith. Reports in say Asquith took that in a narrow contest. The A-grade game between Valley and Forestville also saw another dismissed from the field.

Down the road at Denzil Joyce, two games played there with a scrappy win to Harbord defeating Avalon in the under 16s, and Berowra defeating Christian Brothers in the 17s, securing the win from an intercept try.

Since a high percentage of trainers will be at the Judiciary, the director of referees has announced training will not be on this week.

Wet Weather Calls off Weekend (10-11 June)

After a heavy downpour of rain last Monday and Tuesday and showers on Friday the decision came through that games had been called off for the weekend. Earlier in the week the representative fixture was also canned.

But we might review two (out of three) Brookvale Oval contests on Friday. The first being the Jersey Flegg game between Manly and Western Suburbs, refereed by Jayson Elkins. Obviously the slippery ball was hard to contain for both sides with many drop balls, however it wasn't until 3/4 minutes before half time did someone score. The Magpies going in for a try. The second half was much like the first, but with added rain. Western Suburbs were leading for the whole match, but Manly stole the game in the closing stages 10-8.

With the first Friday night clash at Brookvale for many-a-years, there had to be some acknowledgement of the event. A small presentation involving the area's Federal MP, Tony Abbott, was made (he was also given an honourary membership to the football club?). Steve Menzies' milestone last week was also acknowledged to the local fans, with a small presentation from Beaver to his local club Harbord.

The match itself was dominated by Wests Tigers for (what experts say was) 75 minutes, with Brett Stewart stealing the game with a brilliant nabbing of the ball. But the win had been set up with very strong goal line defence, holding the Tigers out earlier in the match. Manly was the first to cross the line, but the Tigers soon levelled and early in the second half opened up a break. But two tries to Manly late in the game saw them steal the two competition points off the defending premiers. Manly winning their Friday night appearance at Brookvale 16 points to 12.

Miserable Friday Night conditions fail to spoil other weekend fixtures

Friday night was another feature of this weekend's series of games with two games scheduled at St Matthews Farm and one at Denzil Joyce. Unfortunately all three games did not reach full time, in fact one was abandoned.

The weather conditions were nothing but terrible for football. The cold, windy and wet night not enjoyed by those that were left stranded in the open fields. In the under 15s at St Matts, Pennant Hills opened the scoring with a lucky bounce after a kick-chase, but Cromer ran in the next few tries. Score in that one 24-6. The scheduled under 16s between Harbord and Cromer was not played. At Denzil Joyce, the ground proved to be an obsticle for attack, a low scoring game in that one with only one try to North Curl Curl. They beat Narrabeen 8-2.

Saturday and Sunday proved to be better days in terms of rain, but as the sun began setting, coldness hit the grounds. At Beverly Job, the Narraweena Under 17s had a hard fought win, beating Christian Brothers 10-8, and in the 19s Narraweena far too good for Berowra winning quite comfortably.

Up at Hitchcock Park, Forestville defeated Avalon in the A-reserves 20-18, and reports say that Avalon bombed a try out wide on the bell. Earlier in the under 16s, Avalon took the prize from Narrabeen. Other victors were Valley over North Sydney Brothers.

A reminder that there is a rep game still to be played this week between Manly and Parramatta at Forestville on Wednesday night, 7 pm kick off.

Dave Lombardo Lands First Rep Appointment for 06

David Lombardo has been appointed to the first representative match in the Manly district for 2006. The game between Manly Warringah and Parramatta will be played at Ferretville at 7 pm next Wednesday. He will be assisted by Danielle Berry and Laurie Lawira and watched by Paul Harradine.

Good luck to those involved.

In other news, the result from judiciary after Blouse's flickings were 1 and 2 week suspended sentences (first from the under 17s the second from the under 19s played on Sunday at Narraweena). Blouse, returning to refereeing this year was busy over the weekend, with not just a pile of Saturday appointments, but making his debut in under 19s after refereeing a competitive under 17s clash.

Just a reminder to all referees about training on Tuesday night. We will be having a social function at the conclusion of the regular session. Please see the training page for more details!

Good luck to all referees this big weekend - starts Friday Night!

Next General Meeting (30th May 2006)

Association Secretary has advised members of the upcoming general meeting for the Manly-Warringah Referee's Association will take place at the Harbord Bowling Club on Tuesday 30th May 2006 commencing at 6:30 pm.

First Friday Night Match to Forestville

Friday night football was a feature of this weekend's series, with three matches played at Forestville. The first was the under-17s fixture between the Ferrets and Christian Brothers. Brothers took the match comfortably winning under the mercy rule 50-nil. The second was a local darby with Forestville and Belrose. A really competitive match between the two sides, with Ferrets taking honours 25-14 (yes, a field goal was kicked!). The A grade contest eagerly awaited for saw a very disciplined Ferrets side overcome Belrose convincingly!

Sunday saw games returned to St Matty's farm. In the under 15s one side dominated each half. Cromer got off to a great start, but were chased down in the second half by Asquith (1s). A strong finish saw a conversion win the game for Asquith in the last 5 mins (or so). The next game was the under-16s between Cromer and Belrose. Belrose dominated throughout the game, with quick play the balls and a very good roll on in their sets seeing them gain metres quickly and easily. Belrose over Cromer quite convincingly in that one. The Under 19s saw a return of the local darby between Valley and Harbord. They had clashed earlier this year at Harbord park and Valley scored the points there. It was no different this afternoon, pace and size saw Valley overcome their rivals but the overall discipline from both teams saw a very good game of football.

At Narraweena, North Curly defeated 'Weena in the 17s (24-10), and Manly Brothers annihilated 'Weena in the Reserves.

Up at Avalon, the much anticipated battle of the top two sides in the Reserves saw a Valley take the game 26-20. Avalon and Valley had been undefeated all year and the build up for this game was well promoted at Hitchcock park over the weekend and in the Manly Daily. Reports tell me that Valley scored in the closing stages of the match when the scores were 20-all.

A-Res: Brothers over a depleted Forestville side

At Nolans 1, Manly Brothers ran away with the Reserve Grade match after a closely matched first half. Two attempted tries by Brothers were turned down early and when Ferrets opted not to go for a penalty goal scores remained non-existant. It wasn't until about 20-25 minutes into the match that Brothers went into score the opening points.

The second half started in disasterous circumstances for Brothers, dropping the kick off then letting in Forestville in that following set. But lack of numbers caught up with Forestville and Brothers stepping up their attack saw points pile up. Brothers winning the clash over Forestville.

In the under 17s earlier, fans were treated with a very fast, competitive game of football. Unfortunately for Christian Brothers, the score won't reflect the quality game. North Curl Curl took advantage of good field position and produced plays that were rewarded with points. Brothers remained competitive and did not give up throughout the whole game, two intercepts (one leading to a try) were notable plays. North Curly victors in the under 17s.

The Under 16s game between Avalon and Cromer also scheduled at Nolans was forfeited by Avalon.

A well deserved Grandfinal line for Danielle

Danielle Berry will top off a great Junior rep season with a Harold Matthew's Grand Final touch line.

Danielle has been appointed to the Panthers and Bulldogs match at Western Weekender Stadium this Saturday.

Danielle, who ran in the SG Ball Preliminary final on Saturday, will be assisting Jason Higgins from South Sydney in controlling the first of the two junior reps grandfinals that day. (The other being the SG Ball game between Penrith and South Sydney).

Danielle, who won the most improved referee for our association last year and was on the district A-grade grand final line will run as senior touch judge for the game, ranking her number three in junior reps.

The game will kick off at 12 noon.

Congratulations on your well deserved appointment and all the best for the game.

Other appointments for the Junior reps finals - Dominic Feenan will run the other line in the Matts, while the SG Ball (kicking off at 2 pm) will be refereed by David Munro with Adam Reid and Matthew Damaso in assistance.

Congratulations Danielle, S.G. Ball Preliminary Final Line

Congratulations to Danielle Berry on being appointed to the SG Ball Preliminary Final line. The Junior reps finals will be played out at Western Weekender Stadium on Saturday.
Last weekend, in the first round of finals for junior reps, Elko was appointed to a Harold Matts semi final centre, Greg to a Jersey Flegg centre and Danielle to the SG Ball semi final line.
From the association, congrats and all the best this weekend Dan.

Wins at home for Valley, Brothers and Narraweena

Big round of footy this weekend, with Saturday back (after 2 weeks school holidays) and more A grade games on the north side of the Spit Bridge. At Harbord Park, the day started off with the under 16s between Harbord and Belrose. In what could be described as a scrappy game of footy where execution and opportunities didn't meet, Harbord ended up winning the game. In the under 19s, a fight ruined a quality game filled with big hits. Valley over Harbord. In the A-reserve, Valley just over Belrose, and in the A1s Valley way too strong for Belrose. You could say it was a pretty good day for the home side!

Down the road at Nolans 1, two games played with Brothers triumphant in both. In the Under 17s Brothers had a few lucky run away breaks in the first half, (notably a 90 or so metre intercept try) which was consolidated with a solid second half. In the A-reserves, Brothers way too strong for Willoughby.

Up at Avalon, disaster struck with Ian Rigby going down in the first half of the A-grade. Danielle, after a run in the earlier under 16s game and an S.G Ball semi final yesterday took control of the game.

Narraweena and Ferrets met for an A1 grand final replay at Beverly Job, a tough match where Narraweena eventually victors 14-12.

Overdue Congratulations

Just a late note of congratulations to our junior reps guys on their appointments last weekend as Matts and Ball started their final series. After a full rep season in Harold Matts and S.G. Ball, Elko was appointed to a Matts Semi centre, Danielle an S.G. Ball semi line and Greg Kidd a Jersey Flegg centre.

Change of Meeting Date

The meeting set for Tuesday April 25th will be moved forward to next Tuesday (18th April 06) due to the public holiday. Also, there will NOT be a training session on Anzac day.

Avalon defeated Brothers in A-Reserves

Round two of the Manly A-reserves competition saw Avalon take on Christian Brothers at Nolans 1. It was a fair contest throughout most of the game, but letting easy tries in and not capitalising on opportunities saw Brothers come to the demise of Avalon. In the biggest hit of the afternoon, an Avalon player was seen scooting close to the sideline when he was lined up and crunched by two Brothers players coming at him at pace. The force driving him into touch. To his credit the player was able to get up and walk away from the hit before referee Elkins was able to stop time to let someone attend to him. Avalon victors in that game 32-22. Earlier that day, North Curly defeated Brothers in the under 17s and Pennant Hills over Cromer in the under 16s. The other under 16s scheduled between Hills Hawks and Avalon at Nolans 1 was a forfeit.

First Appointments for Season 2006

The First Appointments for the Manly District have just been posted (by Email and on this website) by Director of Referees, David Jay. Addie Flippance will blow time on to this season with the very first match of the year being the Under 8s played at St Matthews Farm at the bright and early time of 8:15 am. Four new referees will be making their debut on Saturday, we wish them well for a new start to what is hopefully a long career in refereeing. This weekend also sees a return to the paddock for David Jay, Ian Rigby and Luke Eisenhauer. We wish them all the best for their first run after some time off. Good luck to all the referees running this weekend, enjoy what hopefully will be a good competition this year!

A note attached is that this is COMPULSORY and ALL members are expected to attend this important meeting

A Day of Firsts

The district club posted their first win today (25th March 2006) for the NRL season with a hard fought win over the Sharks at Brookvale Oval. The Sharks leading 10-nil at one stage in the first half failed to take the lead further, Manly winning 20-18 victors. This clash also marked a renewed rivalry between Manly and Cronulla, with every clash now marked by contesting the "Steve Rogers Memorial Trophy". Rogers, a Cronulla great passed away in January this year. Though he never won a Premiership, his two Grandfinal appearances for Cronulla (1973 and 1978 ) were against great Manly teams.

The Valley 8s competition played today at Harbord Park saw the first send off for the year, with referee Matt Noyen doing the honours. He flicked a bloke from North Sydney Brothers for a trip.

The Valley 8s were again played in good spirits, with The Entrance playing Valley United in the Grandfinal, refereed by Dave Lombardo, Frank Samyia and Tom Peet on the lines. The Entrance victors for the day, with their Number 4 the man of the tournament. Manly Referees on the day were: Dave Lombardo, Greg Kidd, Matt Noyen, Dave Naughton, Frank Samyia, Todd Eisenhauer, Todd Smith and Laurie Lawira, and from North Sydney: Dom Paton, Tom Peet, Stuart Kidd and Martin Ryan

Businessman buys Bunnies with assistance from Gladiator

In NRL news, the members of South Sydney have voted to approve the $3 million plan put forward by Peter Holmes a Court and Russell Crowe. The Holmes a Court and Crowe camp achieved a 75.8% majority vote at the extraordinary general meeting today (19th March 2006). They required a 75% majority vote to have the bid approved. Under the privatisation deal, Holmes a Court and Crowe will have a 75% controlling interest of the football club. Along with this, they will appoint four of the eight board members

Reports say 32 votes had decided the outcome, with 3942 voting 'yes' to the bid and 954 against. Henry Morris, one of the anti-privatisation leaders said that he had accepted the decision of members, however prominant Souths figurehead George Piggins has vowed not to attend another South Sydney match.
