It is of great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of a Manly Referee Life Member, Alf Martin.

Mr Martin, passed away on Wednesday 24th October 2007. He is survived by his wife Pat. Alf was awarded life membership in 1963 and was great friends of two other life members in Bill Grono and Barry Cross.

As an association, we pass on our sincere condolences to the Martin family and to his friends.

New Baby Boy for the Kidd family

The Manly Warringah Referees Association sends best wishes to Greg Kidd and wife Sandra on the birth of their new baby boy, Jonathan Alfred Kidd.

The new bub came into this world on the 23rd September 2007, on the morning Greg was meant to be on a Jersey Flegg Semi Final line. This year, Greg had been selected into the graded squad and ran a number of Premier League lines and was appointed in the semi final series.

Congratulations to Greg on a fantastic year. And the association wishes you and your family all the best with your new son.

Steve Chiddy, NRL Grandfinal Touchy

Congratulations to a Member of the Manly Referees, Steve Chiddy, on his performance in the NRL grand final on Sunday 30th September 2007. Steve was appointed to assist Tony Archer in the grand final between the Melbourne Storm and Manly Sea Eagles.

Also on the day, former Manly Referee, Steve Lyons, was appointed to the Premier League line in support of Jared Maxwell in the game between the Parramatta Eels and North Sydney Bears. That game ended with the Eels scoring a try just before full time to win the game.

Manly Refs to dominate Telstra Stadium

11 September 2007

Danielle Berry has been appointed to a Jersey Flegg line and Jayson Elkins the in-goal in the elimination semi final at Telstra Stadium on Saturday.

After running in the Premier League game in Newcastle last Sunday, Danielle has been re-appointed to games in the Graded Semi Final series. Berry will be assisting Adam Devcich in the Parramatta and Balmain Ryde game set down to kick off at 3:45pm.

Also on that game is Manly Referee Jayson Elkins, who will be an in-goal judge. The Flegg game will precede the Premier League semi final between Parramatta and Newcastle, to be controlled by Jared Maxwell. In the NRL match on Saturday night, another Manly Referee, Steve Chiddy, has been appointed to the touch line in support of Shayne Hayne. That game will kick off at 7:45 pm and is between Parramatta and the Bulldogs.

In other appointments Greg Kidd is at Ringrose Park for a Flegg Semi final touch line in support of referee Chris James. That game will kick off at 1:00pm and is between Canberra and Newcastle.

Danielle Berry, Premier League Quarter Final Line!

5 September 2007

Manly Referee and Graded Touch Judge, Danielle Berry, has been appointed to the Premier League Quarter Final line this Sunday (9 September 07).

Other Manly referees appointed to NSW finals fixtures were Greg Kidd to a Jersey Flegg line, Jayson Elkins, to a Jersey Flegg in goal and Shane Charman to a Premier League Stand By.

For Danielle, Greg and Jayson, these appointments come after their elevation to grade earlier this year. Danielle and Greg have both been appointed to Jim Beam Cup touch lines and finished the year in Premier League. Jayson, taken as a referee finished his season in Jim Beam Cup.

The season has also been very busy for Shane Charman. Taking on Director of Referees in Manly, Shane was appointed by the advisory board to control the under 19s Grand Final last Sunday.

Danielle and Greg have also been appointed to two in goals on Saturday at CUA Stadium. Jayson will be at Brookvale prior to the Manly and South Sydney clash and at Cabramatta Stadium for the Jim Beam Cup semi finals. Danielle's Premier League line is at Energy Australia Stadium with the fourth place Newcastle taking on fifth place North Sydney. Chris James will be the referee.

It's Not Brookvale Oval, but it's not that bad!

5 September 2007

Rat Park became the venue for the Sunday grand finals (played 2nd September) after the preliminary Sunday finals were postponed due to bad weather.

The ground was in great condition and the close grand stand created a great atmosphere on the field. The first game was played between rivals Cromer and Manly Cove. Cromer had completed an undefeated season and defeated Cove in the first week of the finals to qualify straight into the decider. Cove had a tough struggle with Forestville the week prior winning a very tight contest in the dying moments of the game. The grand final was a very fast and exciting affair. Both sides put themselves in positions to win the game, before Cromer sealed their victory with less than ten minutes remaining. Despite the very hot conditions, the players kept the intensity and speed up. Refereeing his first Sunday grand final was Luke Eisenhauer with the support of Blake Gillmer and Dane Pymble.

With the under 17s grand final secured by a North Sydney team, the next fixture was the under 19s encounter between Narraweena and Valley United. If the cliche 'a game of two halves' was to be used on the day, it would apply to this game. Valley came out firing, dominating the ruck area and looked the better side in the first half where Narraweena lacked the intensity. In the second, Narraweena began putting on the points and with the flow of possession, 'weena got a roll on and tired the Valley players out. Narraweena taking out the Under 19s title. Refereeing the game was Shane Charman, in assistance was Todd Smith and a late call up for Tom Berry.

The A reserves game was a firey encounter between Forestville and Valley. The game was tough and physical from the get go. Valley just getting over the line in that game. Refereeing was Chris Bignold and his touch judges, Mark Murray and Bevan Bourke.

The much anticipated A-grade grand final between Narrabeen and Forestville became a physical encounter with players putting themselves on the line in rather damaging plays. A big crowd had come down to support their teams with both Forestville and Narrabeen bringing with them a large fan base. Narrabeen opened the scoring early on with a penalty goal. A try a piece to Narrabeen and the Ferrets saw a deficit of 2 going into the break. In the second half, an early try to Narrabeen were the only points scored, as two tries were disallowed following (one to either side). The first possible Forestville try was ruled to be a double movement, while a late attempt by Narrabeen was called back for an offside chaser getting involved. Late in the game, a Forestville player was put in the sin bin for an indiscretion and subsequent dissent. Refereeing the number one game was Matt Noyen, his touch judges were Vic Rulewski and Laurie Lawira (who came in to replace an injured Gary Greco).

Saturday Grand Finals 2007

5 September 2007

After a controversial build up with ground allocations, the Saturday Grandfinals were entertaining for the thousands of spectators, officials and players that took to the fields around the Manly Warringah district on Saturday 25 August 2007.

In the match of the day on Brookvale Oval, the under 12s mod fixture saw Manly Cove defeat Narrabeen. Refereeing was Todd Smith with John McEvoy and Tom Berry in Assistance. The games at Brookvale Oval kicked off with 'team mini' comprising of veteran referees Phil Brown, Rob Peard and Greg Diews. The under 7/1s was won by Beacon Hill, while Mona Vale won the 8/1s. In the mod games, Daniel Chiddy earned a start in the 9/1s after a very successful first season refereeing. Likewise Liam Jones in the 10/1s. Both were assisted by Jordan Meredith and Ralph Mills. In those games, Manly Cove defeated Harbord in the 9s and Mona Vale over Harbord in the 10s. In the under 11s, Mona Vale were victors over Avalon. Tom Berry refereeing with Liam Jones and John McEvoy in assistance.

Down the road at Denzil Joyce, the Mona Vale club completed a successful day taking out the last game played beating a hot Harbord side in the under 14s. Refereeing the fixture was Gary Greco and Bevan Bourke and Tim Keary running lines. Preceding that game, Mona Vale also took out the under 13s, once again dominating their age group, running away from a highly spirited Cromer side. Bevan Bourke appointed to the middle with Scott Chidley and Tim Keary in assistance. The first game played at Denzil saw an all Mona Vale affair in the 11/2s and the only game Mona Vale actually lost that day was against Belrose in the 12/2s took place after that. Jess Mawhinney in control of the 11s and Blake Gillmer in the 12s, D Huckle and Luke Eisenhauer on lines. Scott Chidley refereed the 13/2s between Narraweena and Beacon Hill with Beacon Hill taking honours there.

And the other ground to host grand finals was at Lake Park. Kicking off the day there was Keith Anderson with the 7/2s, won by Christian Brothers. In the 8/2s North Curl Curl defeated Avalon, 9/2s was Forestville over Avalon and 10/2s was an extra time game with Forestville over Harbord. Referees were Paul Dawson (8s), Simon Lang (9s) and Matt Haines (10s). In the Under 15s, Manly Cove took on rivals, Cromer. Meeting earlier in the finals series, Cromer won quite convincingly scoring quick tries in succession. But the grand final saw a different game develop. Cove, after the first set of six had put on points and then later backed it up with two more tries in the first half. In the second, their bigger forwards created havoc and more points kept coming for Manly Cove. Cromer were able to get one try back with quick plays around the ruck. Cove defeating Cromer in that game 44-6. Refereeing the under 15s fixture was Laurie Lawira with Chris Scott and Peter Crombie-Brown in assistance. Other Touch Judges used at Lake Park were Jason Rudge and Lisa Georges.

A-Grade Referees in support of Under 6s

30 July 2007

Our competitive A-Grade Referees, Shane Charman, Matt Noyen, Chris Bignold and Luke Eisenhauer, were in support of the Under 6 Gala Day played on Saturday.

The day out at Lionel Watts Reserve and put on by the Belrose Football Club was reported to be a big success.

The day commenced at 8:30 am and the kids were running around for 10 minute games.

The referees also took part in a running race, with Luke Eisenhauer winning that, after been given a 20m head start on Charman and Noyen and 10m start on Bignold.

A notably disappointing occurrance occurred when Mr Bignold was seen awarding two penalties in the game. Including one for being offside!!!

Barry Cross' 50 years acknowledged at 75th Anniversary

7th July 07

The contribution made by Assocaition Patron, Barry Cross, was the highlight at last night's 75th Anniversary Dinner.

Cross was awarded a Fifty-year blazer in recognition of what Phillip Brown said was two-thirds of the Association history. In presenting the Blazer to Barry, Brown spoke of Cross' contribution to advising young referees and constant care for the welfare of other referees. Rob Peard also said that Cross had a love of the game and whenever you spoke to him, his attention would always turn to refereeing.

Barry Cross, still actively refereeing Friday afternoon school games, was a First Grade Referee and International Touch Judge. He sat on the advisory board of the NSW Referees and at Manly served as Director, Advisor, Welfare officer to name a few. He was awarded Life Membership in 1968.

In the other events of the night, Jason Walsh warmly welcomed members and guests to the evening acknowledging the work and dedication of referees, in Manly and across kindred Associations. Rob Peard toasted the ladies and Mick Stone, on behalf of the guests, gave a toast to the Manly Referees.

The Master of Ceremonies, David Jay, warmly introduced the fifteen Life Members that had come, some travelling interstate.

The special guest for the evening, John 'Bomber' Peard, treated the audience to some light hearted laughs recalling some stories of his playing days.

In commemoration of the event, Members received a specially lablled bottle of Red or White Wine, and a engraved wine glass marking the event. The occasion was held at the Manly Golf Course.

The Rain has done it again!

15 June 07

Director of Referees, Shane Charman, has informed appointed members that the weather has once again forced the council to close grounds and call off this weekend's Junior League round.

To some this was welcome news, as they would like a break. To others who wanted a run, this was bad news. To the majority that had to walk through the rain at least one time in the last 48 hours, it wasn't news... it was inevitable.

Following four days of continuous rain and poor weather conditions, the council had closed grounds since Thursday, cancelling all Junior League fixtures over the weekend.

Across New South Wales, Jersey Flegg and Jim Beam Cup games were also called off, to prevent further damage to playing fields.

We wish Dave Naughton a Speedy Recovery

8 June 2007

Our sincere thoughts go to Manly Life Member and active referee, David Naughton, who was the victim of an assult yesterday. In an ugly incident at work, Dave was confronted by a group of youths that took exception to not being let on a bus. David was taken to hospital but is now at home recovering.

David, the association sends out our support to you on your speedy recovery and hopes for those involved are found and properly dealt with.

Gustly Winds and Torrential Rain call off Weekend

8 June 2007

Director of Referees, Shane Charman, has advised that this weekend's fixtures have been called off due to the recent weather. The heavy rain on Thursday saw the early closure of Newport Oval and Hitchcock park, and all grounds in the Warringah district and following today's heavy downfall, there will be no chance that these grounds will re-open this weekend.

Jayson Elkins, 3rd Manly Ref Graded in 07!

23 May 2007

Following his appointment to the Harold Matthews Grand Final, Manly A-Grade Referee Jayson Elkins has been taken to Grade.

Elkins boasts a portfolio of refereeing achievements and being graded as a referee puts him in good stead for many more.

Elkins completed a full season of Junior Reps this year, which culminated in two SG Ball finals then the Harold Matthews Grand Final.

In the grand final, the Bulldogs and Panthers were at a draw at full time, before the Bulldogs scored a try in the first period of extra time.

Last year, Elkins was appointed to the A-Reserve Grand Final and won the Association’s most improved trophy. Earlier in the year, he had also refereed a full season in the Junior Development Squad finishing with the Harold Matthews Semi Final.

During the year, Elkins was regularly appointed to the Jersey Flegg fixtures, including a number of Friday night games that preceded NRL. He was also appointed as the MCC Opens Grand Final Referee.

This is also a great achievement for the Association. Earlier this year, Greg Kidd and Danielle Berry were both graded as Touch Judges.

The three Manly Referees graded this year, join Darryn Lang, Steve Chiddy (both re-admitted as members at the last general meeting) and President Jason Walsh as Graded Manly Referees.

3rd General Meeting for 2007 - 8th May

Secretary Chris Bignold has sent notification that the upcoming general meeting of the referees association will be on Tuesday 8th May 2007. It will be at the Harbord Bowling Club, commencing at 6:30 pm. Our NRL representative, Bernard Sutton, will be addressing us at the meeting. Please be in attendence to show support for Bernard and the new NRL initiative.

Well Deserved Grand Final for Jayson Elkins and Shane Charman

7 May 2007

Manly Referee, Jayson Elkins, has been appointed as the referee for the Harold Matthews Grandfinal this Saturday.

Last week, Elkins refereed the SG Ball semi final, which was comfortably won by Parramatta over Canberra, 58-nil.

Elkins will be ably assisted by fellow Manly Referee, Shane Charman, who has appointed to the grandfinal line after also being appointed to the same SG Ball semi final.

Elkins and Charman have featured weekly in the Junior representative season, and in the first week of the finals ran with another Manly referee, Matt Noyen, in the 3v6 SG Ball match.

Elkins and Charman proceeded to one of two SG Ball games and now have finished in the top six referees in the Junior Development Squad.

This time last year, it was another Manly Referee in Danielle Berry that was appointed to a Harold Matthews grandfinal line.

The game will be played at Western Weekender Stadium, St Marys, between the Bulldogs and Penrith Panthers. The game will kick off at 12 noon.

Jayson Elkins to control SG Ball Semi Final

1 May 2007

Manly Referees, Jayson Elkins and Shane Charman were today appointed to the SG Ball Semi Final to be played this Saturday.

Jayson has been appointed to the centre while Shane on his line. The game will be between Parramatta and Canberra at Western Weekender Stadium, St Marys.

Jayson, Shane and another Manly Referee, Matt Noyen were teamed up last week in the SG Ball quarter final. The three performed very well in a one sided contest.

The game was between Parramatta and the Bulldogs. At half time, Parramatta led 30-6 before finishing at 42-12.

Matt Noyen was appointed to a Harold Matthews Semi Final, running with Craig Diebert for Ben Evrill. The game will also be played at St Marys.

In other Junior representative finals appointments, North Sydney Referee Jon Stone will centre the Harold Matthews between Penrith and Parramatta, supported by Sam Essen and Hussain Iskander.

Michael Laverty has the centre for the other SG Ball game, with Dominic Feenan and Robert Moore as sideline officials. The other touch judge for Jayson's game is Lewis South.

The SG Ball semi final between Parramatta and Canberra is set down for a 1:30pm kick off.

Changes to Obstruction

1 May 07

The resolution passed at today's NRL coaches meeting will be to respect the referee as the sole judge of an obstruction.

In a telephone conference between Referee officials and NRL coaches, the conclusion was that the obstruction rule will leave the referee making a subjective call as to whether the defensive line was unfairly disadvantaged because of a decoy runner.

The NRL issued a media release today saying that in strong monitoring of the decoy runners was to prevent accessive "blocking plays" being part of the game. This was a strong concern to come from last year.

Under guidelines released earlier this year, any ball carrier that ran around a decoy runner who may not have made contact with the defensive line was to be penalised.

Today Referee's Boss, Robert Finch, said that it was a genuine attempt "to be more prescriptive and to provide clearer guidelines". But following recent controversy, both officials and coaches have agreed "that you can’t try and be too prescriptive... coaches, players and fans have to accept that some things need to come down to the judgment of the referee or the video referee.

"There may still be some debate in this area, but for referees the deciding factor will be whether they believe a player who was in a position to make a tackle was impeded.

---

The following are ammedments that will be made to the Key performance indicators:

KEY INDICATOR DEFINITION CHANGES 2007 – OBSTRUCTION

Point 1

Current interpretation:

“The ball carrier cannot run behind a decoy runner and gain an advantage regardless of any contact between the decoy and the defence”

This interpretation has been eliminated and the current interpretation as per the Laws of the Game will be enforced:

Section 2 Glossary –

“Obstruction is an illegal act of impeding an opponent who does not have the ball.”

Point 2

Current interpretation

“It is the responsibility of the decoy runner/s NOT to interfere with the defending team.”

This interpretation remains with the following understanding:

“Any attacking player/s who is in front of the ball must make every endeavour not to interfere with the defending team.”

All other points set out in the 2007 Key Indicators remain unchanged.

Manly Referees to Control SG Ball Final

24 April 07

Manly Referees Jayson Elkins, Shane Charman and Matt Noyen have been appointed to an SG Ball Quarter final.

The Manly Referees will be at Campbelltown Stadium this Saturday. Jayson has been appointed to the centre, while Shane and Matt to assist him on the lines.

The match will kick off at 11:30am and will be between the third placed Parramatta and the sixth placed Bulldogs. It will be an elimination game. The SG Ball regular season finished last week after a 9 week competition.

---

It has been a very successful season for the Manly Referees. Jayson has been training with the Premier League Squad and has had a full season with the whistle. Jayson finishes the season as one of the leading referees in the squad.

Shane returned to refereeing this year, both in Manly and the Junior Representative level after taking a year off. At Manly, he was elected the Director of Referees and is running the training sessions. Like Jayson, Shane is one of the experienced members of the Junior Development squad and a finals appointment is the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication over the years.

Matt, on the otherhand made his debut in Junior Reps this year after finishing last year with the Manly District Under 17s grand final. This year, Matt was appointed to a number of SG Ball lines and showed great ability at the inter-district level. To be appointed to an SG Ball final is in itself an achievement, so to have done that in his first year is of a noteworthy mention.

This game is a great promotion for our association. It demonstrates not only the great ability but is a credit to the coaches and everyone that has been apart of their development. I think, as an association we can be proud of this appointment.

To Elko, Shano and Matt, all the best from the Association. Good luck this weekend and into the finals series.

Greg Kidd goes to Grade

27 March 07

Manly A-Grade referee and Premier League Train on Squad member, Greg Kidd, has taken the offer to become a Graded Touch Judge.

Greg was offered to take the flag to which he agreed after a few days of contemplation. Greg will join Danielle who was graded that night Greg received the offer.

At the end of last year, Greg was invited to train with eleven other members as possibles to grade. Manly referees Jayson Elkins and Danielle Berry were also invited.

Greg refereed a full season of Junior Representative fixtures last year finishing in the SG Ball competition. In district games, Greg was appointed to the under 19s grandfinal and due to a withdrawal, ran the line for the A-grade grandfinal.

Harbord Bowling Club for Drinks after A-Grade this Weekend

14 April 07

President Jason Walsh has advised members that a bar tab will be running for those that return to the Harbord Bowling Club on Sunday afternoon.

In what is hoped to progressively be a social gathering place, the Executive have pushed for a good turn up at the Bowling Club.

Last year the numbers significantly dropped with only a handful of regulars making it down after officiating in matches. But this year, supporting our sponsor will be a priority.

The Bowling club will be a great chance for members to catch up with the weekend's events. Discuss games, rulings, catch the Channel 9 telecast and even have a feed.

It is hoped that Sunday afternoons post football will add to the social element of this association.

With A-Grade kicking off at 3 o'clock and finishing roughly at 4:20 pm, expect the roll up of members to start around 4:45pm depending on ground allocations.

Narrabeen, Valley and Narraweena First Round Winners

4 April 07

Narraweena and the two Grand finalists, Narrabeen and Valley took out first round wins (1st April 07) in the new season in the Manly district.

In the Narrabeen and Belrose game played as a precursor to the Jim Beam Cup at Lionel Watts Reserve, Narrabeen went into the half time break leading 12-6, before kicking out to a 26 to 12 point win.

Narraweena were comfortable victors against Berowra, 42-10 and Valley over Forestville 24-8.

In the new format of competition, A-reserve results were: Narrabeen 18 over Belrose 12; Valley 30 over Forestville 10 and Berowra defeated Narraweena in a tight one 24-22.

Message from our Gear Steward

Hi all ,

We are really short of gear for this season...

Firstly I'dd like to ask any members that are no longer active with current on field gear being, black socks, black shorts, black & green stripe run on jersey to either kindly donate it, or depending on the condition the association will buy back the gear.

We have a large amount of referees either returning to our ranks or gaining their ticket and with our sponsorship with Harbord Bowling & AAMI still uncertain for 2008 beyond,we need as many uniforms as possible.

Also those who require new gear or different sizes, please contact me ASAP. I will be placing a one off small uniform order on Monday 2nd April 2007, so you will have to get back to me before then, or you may miss out.

Finally , I have just recieved a new batch of Acme Thunderer whistles. If your lucky enough to find these in the shop they retail for $27 upwards, I've got them for $17 to our members.

Thanks for your time

Jayson Elkins

Next General Meeting (27th March 07)

Secretary Chris Bignold has announced the next general meeting of the Manly Warringah Referees Association will be held on the 27th March 2007 at the Harbord Bowling Club, to commence at 6:30pm. Food shall be provided for members at the conclusion of the meeting.

School Games

School games are starting up again. Jayson Elkins (Delegate to Schools) is looking for available people to do High School games. Under 13s to Opens. If anyone is available to do them, they are during the week, usually about lunch time. If you can offer your help or just let him know when you are available, he would appreciate any help!

Similarly, if you wish to referee the Primary School games, Frank Cridland is co-ordinating them.

There are a few High School games this week!

Congratulations Danielle Berry

Danielle Berry will become the latest Manly Warringah Referee to be called to the graded squad after receiving the news on Monday Night.

17 February 2007

Jason Walsh was last night elected as the new President for the Manly Warringah Referees Association following Rob Peard's decision to stand down at the end of last season.

Walsh, an NRL touch judge, spoke of the commitment he has assumed to the members of the association saying that his "phone is an open door".

Walsh told members at the general meeting he would like to focus on training and push members to achieve their personal goals. He said he would like to see the training grant from the New South Wales Rugby League invested in new training equipment.

Walsh was also elected to represent the Association at the Manly Warringah Junior League.

Along with Walsh, Shane Charman was elected as the Director of Referees and Chris Bignold as Secretary. Philip Brown and Greg Diews were re-elected unopposed as Vice President and Treasurer respectively. Danielle Berry will be in charge of social events.

Members were appreciative of the work Rob Peard had put into his executive position and Philip Brown proposed that Peard hold the position of "immediate past president", a position held only by Former President Bill Grono.

Female refs in a league of their own

Adrian Proszenko
February 11, 2007

MELISSA Yates and Danielle Berry are aiming to create history by becoming the first women to officiate in the National Rugby League.

Yates has already refereed at Premier League level and has set her sights on making the step up to first grade, while touch judge Berry is hoping to do likewise by earning one of the six available spots in the league's development squad for officials.

No woman has officiated a top-flight rugby league match in the game's 99-year history, but NRL referees boss Robert Finch said that may soon change.

"If they're good enough, why not," Finch said.

That was welcome news to Berry, who hopes to become the first woman to do so.

"That would be great. A few people from my association have said, 'You could be the first one'," Berry said.

"I want to do it as soon as I can so I'll train as hard as possible and see how I go."

Yates also has her sights set on the NRL, but believes her best chance of making the top grade is as a sideline official rather than a referee.

The 27-year-old doubted league officials were ready to allow a woman to control a first-grade match.

"I'd love to," she said, "but realistically it's never going to happen for females. This year I'm concentrating mainly on refereeing in Premier League, getting a few games there, and hopefully become a sideline official in the NRL.

"In Premier League we obviously have NRL players that come back down and they have been quite happy with me as a sideline official; there haven't been any dramas because I'm a female.

"I don't think the media would have a problem with it either, they would probably embrace us, but we're always going to have our critics."

While the occasional "boofhead" gave her a hard time, Berry said, the players generally responded better to her than to her male counterparts.

"In my local district I've overheard the captains say before a game, 'We've got a chick today, watch the language, no backchat'," she said.

"You obviously get one or two boofheads that use it as a weapon and abuse the hell out of us, but it's all right."

The rise of Berry and Yates is a timely boost to the NRL, which is keen to attract newcomers to the profession.

Leading referees are employed on a full-time basis and capable of earning more than $100,000 a year.

Rule Changes for 2007

1 February 07

The ten metre infield mark from the sideline will now be redundant with free kicks to be taken twenty metres infield.

This, along with judiciary system changes and maintaining the 'golden point' extra time rule, was the most significant rule change to come from the annual National Rugby League meeting.

The National Rugby League has issued a media release containing the full list of interpretation changes for the upcoming season.

Some of the most notable mentions include, judging an offside at kicks. The NRL has maintained the interpretation that both feet must be behind the line of the ball.

There has been no change to the play the ball area, and a genuine attempt at playing the ball must still be shown.

The use of the sin bin has been expanded and may be used for minor infringements of foul play.

The NRL has also included indicators for the obstruction interpretation in their press release.
