Congratulations Matt and Louise Noyen

Congratulations to Matt and Louise Noyen on the birth of their new edition, Bailey Kokoda Noyen. Bailey was born on the morning of November 17 2008. Matt was reportedly eagerly awaiting the birth, training (and refereeing) along-side his mobile phone, waiting for the phone call. The new family is said to be doing well.

From the Association, we wish Bailey, Louise and Matt all the very best for the future.

District Club celebrates NRL Grand Final win

In one of the sweetest victories of all-time, Manly has defeated Melbourne Storm 40 to nil in the 2008 NRL Grand Final at ANZ Stadium.

Thousands of local fans descended on the Leagues Club Sunday night (October 5 2008) to celebrate with Coach Des Hasler, Captan Matt Orford, legend Steve Menzies, and their champion team.

It was the club's first grand final win in twelve years. When the side stepped on to the field Sunday night their form against Melbourne Storm was poor. They had lost both games to them this year, 26-4 in the first round, and 16-10 in the second. And that was on the back of their drubbing in last years's Grand Final.

Manly scored eight tries while Storm scored none. The half-time score at 8-0 came from two tries decided by the video ref, in the 24th and 34th minutes.

The 40-0 margin eclipsed Eastern Suburbs' 38-0 win over St George in 1975 as the biggest in a grand final, with Melbourne - who delivered their worst display of 2008 - the first side since Cronulla in the 1978 replay to be held scoreless in a grand final.

The crowd of 80,388 included many members of the association, courtesy of tickets organised by Jason Walsh and Laurie Lawira, through Martin Meredith at the Academy.

As the music boomed from nightspots along the Corso, fans draped in maroon and white cheered and proudly waved the flag of their beloved Sea Eagles, The Daily Telegraph reported. Hundreds gathered along the Promenade at Manly Beach to celebrate the victory and reflect on the club's triumphant premiership win just 12 months after the team's crushing defeat to Storm in 2007.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic," Emma Hicks, 32, of Balgowlah, said.

"I've followed Manly's progress all season and to see them win by so far tonight was amazing."

"We annihilated them."

Phil Lovell, 35, of Manly said the win was "sweet revenge" for the club's heartbreaking loss last year. "I'm so ecstatic tonight," he said. "Manly is in the blood around here and there's just an awesome feeling tonight.

"I had no idea it would be such an emphatic win but it's turned out to be the best send-off anyone could imagine for Beaver."

Richard Foltin, 35, said the win erased last year's bitter memories.

"This time in 2007 we were all sad and miserable," he said.

"But tonight we are feeling fantastic and the celebrations will continue all night."

Husband and wife Kim and Steve Dunbar travelled from Orange, in the state's Central West, to watch their beloved team's convincing win.

They watched the game from the Steyne Hotel and said the atmosphere made the trip worthwhile, said The Daily Telegraph report.

Referee for Sunday night's Grand Final was Tony Archer. Sideline Officials were association member Steve Chiddy, and Jeff Younis. Video ref was Bill Harrigan with support from Steve Clark.

Steve Chiddy appointed to NRL Grand Final

29 September 2008

Manly Referee Steve Chiddy has been appointed as sideline official for this weekend's NRL grand final. Steve will assist Tony Archer who has been named as referee for the second year in a row.

Steve has achieved top honours this year, with his appointment to the Centenary test match in May, followed by two of the three State of Origin fixtures.

Manly will go into this weekend's grand final as favourites against Melbourne. The game will commence at the earlier time of 5 o'clock, at ANZ stadium.

The Frank Walsh Memorial Trophy for Most Improved Referee went to Shane Charman, with the NRL sponsored senior most improved to Frank Samyia. Frank, refereed the Under 14s Grand Final, his first centre in a grand final.

The night was a big success with a high number of members, and eight life members, in attendance. AAMI, the association's main sponsor, officials of the New South Wales, and other associations, were also present.

Manly Sea Eagles to contest the NRL 2008 Grand Final

The district club will compete in the NRL 2008 Grand Final this Sunday (October 5 2008) at ANZ Stadium. It will be the Sea Eagles second grand final appearance in two years. Manly’s last premiership win was in 1996.

Saturday night’s game saw a big turn out, with the crowd hitting 32,095. The Sea Eagles scored seven tries to one.

Sunday’s Grand Final will be a repeat of last year, however Manly will be hoping to turn the tables on Melbourne Storm.

NRL debating appointing two referees to every NRL game commencing in 2009

The move follows trials of games utilising two referees, and discussions by club CEOs at a recent conference. A statement from the CEOs conference said, "There was support, albeit not unanimous, for the two-referee experiment." Recent trials are said to have demonstrated that having two officials on the field speeded up the game, and reduced wrestling tactics.

The matter will be further considered at a football operations conference on November 13th. If a recommendation is put forward it will need to be signed off by the NRL board, the NRL partnership committee, and the Rugby League International Federation.

Any move to dual referees in games could open up more opportunities for local referees although there is some speculation that existing referees may be saddled with dual appointments.

Grand Finals played out at Lake Park

It was the grand finale of the Grand Finals for 2008 at Lake Park on Saturday August 30 2008.

Games washed out the previous week at Nolans were transferred to Saturday at Lake Park, Narrabeen.

Due to changes to the appointments, Phillip Brown ended up with two under 7s grand finals! He took charge of the first game of the day, with support from Shaun Corbett-Jones and Emily Kempson. In a close encounter Narrabeen beat Christian Brothers 20-14 in extra time (Browny now owes everyone a drink - the only extra time game in the Grand Finals series)

Christian Brothers featured again in the Under 8s Grand Final, but in an even tighter game went down again, this time to Cromer. The final result was 18-16. In the centre was Jack Hislop with Julian Griffiths and Nathan Kelly on the lines.

Cromer and North Curl Curl contested the Under 9s Grand Final which was refereed by James Calabro, with Shaun Corbett-Jones and Emily Kempson on the flanks. North Curl Curl won the game 38-20.

Veteran referee David Naughton was at the helm of the Under 10s Grand Final between Avalon and Belrose. Avalon won the game easily, the final score being 36 to 6. Assisting David were Julian Griffiths and Nathan Kelly.

Another substitution had to be made in the Under 11s. It saw Laurie step in for Tom Watkins! Excellent support shown by Darcy Norrish and Nathan Kelly, the game was won by Harbord over Avalaon in the final 3 minutes of the game, the final score being 16-12.

John Dalton had charge of the Under 12s Grand Final between Harbord and Cromer. Cromer were too strong, taking out the premiership with a score of 34 to 12. Darcy Norrish and Laurie Lawira also took part in this game.

Refereeing the Under 13s Grand Final was Darrin Huckle, with Vic Rulewski and Blake Gillmer touch-judging. In a close encounter, Narraweena scoring a try off a quick tap at a penalty in the last 10 seconds to snatch the game from Cromer to win 20-16.

In the match of the day, the Under 14s Grand Final, Scott Chidley was in the centre, with Vic Rulewski and Blake Gillmer on the lines. At half time, a replacement referee was found in Blake Gillmer. Harbord registered a convincing win over Narraweena, the final score being 36-12.

New Baby Boy for Jayson and Mikalea

26 August 08

Jayson and Mikalae are the proud parents of a new baby boy. News of the birth of Max Elkins came through during the presentation of the Association Grand finals.

Jayson was set to take the field at 3pm for the NSW VB Cup fixture at Ringrose park, but was alerted to the imminent birth fifteen minutes prior. Jayson said he made it back to Manly Hospital in record time, to be at Mikalea's bedside.

News is that mum and the new baby are doing well. Congratulations to the Elkins on the birth of their second son.

Berowra win first ever A Grade premiership

Berowra Rugby League Club made history on Sunday (August 24 2008) by winning the A Grade Grand Final at Brookvale Oval. In doing so the Club has won its first A Grade premiership ever, and has become the first North Sydney club to win the A Grade competition in Manly.

Berowra, playing Valley United, one of the the most successful Manly Clubs having won twelve A Grade premierships, scored the first try 8 minutes into the game and led comfortably by half-time. The side also scored first in the second half, again 8 minutes in. Valley fought back but were unable to bridge the gap. Berowra won the game 22-14. It was a disappointing result for Valley, which had hoped to win the A Grade premiership just as the club did in its first ever year, 40 years ago this year in 1969.

Controlling his first A Grade Grand Final was Shane Charman, adding to his successes in the Junior Reps this year. Vic Rulewski and Garry Greco were on the lines, while Frank Samyia and John McEvoy officiated as in-goal touch judges.

Berowra and Valleys also featured in the A2 Grand Final refereed by David Lombardo with Mark Murray and Rocky Davis in support. There was no score by either side until 9 minutes before half-time when Valleys crossed for their first try of the match, which they converted. Unhappily for Berowra, at the very same time they lost their captain, hooker Cameron Robinson, through injury. Valleys proved too strong in the end, taking out the game 16-6.

The Under 19s Grand Final, with North Sydney referees in charge, resulted in a comprehensive win by Berowra over Christian Brothers. The Berowra side won 40 points to 4. The game was marred by an all-in brawl fifteen minutes from the end, which resulted in 3 Berowra players, and one Christian Brothers player being sent from the field.

The Under 17s Grand Final was a thriller with Cromer taking an early, and substantial, lead over Manly Cove. Cromer led 26-4 at half-time. Manly Cove dominated the second half and with minutes to go hit the lead. Cromer however bounced back in the final minute to snatch victory. The final score was 32 to 28. In the centre was Chris Bignold. Touch-judging were Brendan Lucas and Laurie Lawira.

Matt Noyen kicked off proceedings at Brookvale Oval Sunday with the Under 16s Grand Final which he controlled, with Todd Smith and Bevan Bourke in support. North Sydney team Willoughby was contesting its first Grand Final in the Manly Competition. Local team North Curl Curl however proved too strong on the day, winning the game 36-8.

In the A3 Grand Final played at North Sydney Oval on Saturday night (August 23 2008) Cromer defeated North Ryde.

Mona Vale win top game in Saturday football

Mona Vale had to work overtime to keep out a strong-finishing Manly Cove on Saturday (August 23 2008) at Nolans 2, in the Under 15s Grand Final. Mona Vale ended up winning the game 18-14. Bevan Bourke was in the centre, with Brendan Lucas and Vic Rulewski on the lines.

Only three games were played at Nolans because of the state of the ground which was flooded by heavy rain overnight on Thursday and Friday. All remaining fixtures from Under 7s to Under 14s were postponed. Fixtures set down for Brookvale Oval went ahead.

Frank Samyia directed proceedings in the Under 14s Grand Final at Nolans 2, which kicked off at 1:30pm. Brendan Lucas and Vic Rulewski were on the lines. Mona Vale were successful over Cromer by 26 points to 14.

At 12:30pm at Nolans 2, with Todd Smith at the helm, Manly Cove and Beacon Hill contested the Under 13s Grand Final. Garry Greco and John McEvoy manned the flanks. Manly Cove were too strong, running out winners 26-12 over Beacon Hill.

At 9:00am at Brookvale Oval veteran Phillip Brown got the day’s proceedings underway by blowing the whistle for the commencement of the Under 7s game between Mona Vale and Harbord. On his lines were David Lombardo and Corey Messiter. In a high-scoring game Harbord defeated Mona Vale 34 to 22.

At Brookvale Oval at 10:00am the Under 8s Grand Final was played involving sides from Beacon Hill and Narrabeen. Refereeing the game was Jackson Kelly, with David Lombardo and Corey Messiter on the flanks. Narrabeen won the game 22-12.

At Brookvale Oval at 11:00am the Under 9s Grand Final was played. Jordan Meredith officiated in the centre with support from Matt Noyen and Tom Chipchase. Mona Vale won the game over Belrose 16 points to nil.

At 12 noon at Brookvale Oval Mona Vale met Manly Cove in the Under 10s Grand Final. The game was refereed by Lisa Georgas. In support was Matt Noyen and Tom Chipchase. Manly Cove won the game 36-12.

At 1:00pm at Brookvale Oval referee Zac Bailey kicked off the Under 11s Grand Final between Harbord and Christian Brothers. Touch judges Mark Murray and Rocky Davis were in support.
In a close-finish Harbord beat Christian Brothers 24-18.

At 2:00pm at Brookvale Oval the Under 12s Grand Final was played out between Harbord and Avalon. Daniel Chiddy was in charge of the game with backing from Rocky Davis and Mark Murray. Incredibly there was no score in the game until the final minute when Harbord crossed the line to win the game 4-0.

Saturday football Grand Finals disrupted by wash-outs

All Division 2 Grand Finals at Nolans 1 and 2 grounds, scheduled to be played this Saturday (August 23 2008), have been postponed. Officials decided the two heavily-soaked grounds were not suitable for all scheduled games to go ahead.

Division 1 Grand Finals set down for Brookvale Oval and Nolans 1 will proceed as planned. This means all games scheduled to be played at Brookvale Oval, commencing with the Under 7s at 9:00am, and concluding with the Under 12s Grand Final at 2:00pm, will proceed.

The three senior games at Nolans 1, the Under 13s at 12:30pm, the Under 14s at 1:30pm, and the Under 15s at 2:30pm will also all go ahead.

In the Minor Semi Final at Forestville Oval, Cromer beat the home side 24-10, despite having a player sent off in the second half. An alleged high tackle on Forestville half-back Robbie Sydenham resulted in Cromer's John Hopoate being sent from the field.

Valley United and Cromer will now do battle in the Final on Sunday August 17 2008 at Brookvale Oval. The winner will meet Berowra in the Grand Final on Sunday August 24 2008.

In the minor semi final Harbord United had little trouble in overcoming Narrabeen 38-8 at Harbord Park, eliminating the Sharks from the finals.

Harbord United will now meet Mona Vale in the Final on Saturday (August 16 2008) at Nolans 1. The winner will play Manly Cove in the Grand Final on Saturday August 23 2008.

Berowra trounce Forestville in final A Grade game of season

Berowra showed why they are A Grade Minor Premiers Sunday (August 3 2008) when they convincingly beat Forestville 30 to 6 at Forestville Oval, in the final series of fixtures for the 2008 season. At Lake Park Narrabeen overcame Narraweena to win 38-22, after struggling midway through the game. Cromer comprehensively defeated a depleted Belrose side at St. Matthews Farm 74-6, while Valley United had to work overtime to snatch victory from Avalon at Hitchcock Park, the final score being 28-22.

McCallum grilled by members in marathon meeting

The General meeting Tuesday night (July 29 2008) was highlighted by Greg McCallum giving a talk on his experiences in Australia and England with members reeling off questions which kept the meeting running into record time.

McCallum was a longtime first grade referee and did three successive Grand Finals in 1992, 1993 and 1994. He also refereed several State of Origin games in his time at the top. He stepped down after the 1994 Grand Final to head for England where he was Director of Referees for the English Super League for around eight years.

Greg told members he began his career at Manly after first trying out as a player. He played in the first Cromer side, which was J Grade, in the 1960s. He became a referee in 1969 at the urging of Manly Referees stalwart Clive Rogers. Greg made particular mention of his mentoring by Rogers, and current member Barry Cross. Both had a major impact on his career, he said. Greg said his most memorable game was his first Grand Final in 1992. Asked to comment on the Video Referee, Greg told how he, as Director of Referees in England, first introduced the Video Ref, after a friend and colleague in the media pointed out that five tries awarded in one month, should have been disallowed. He said the Video Referee was used in England for a year before it was taken up in Australia.

Tuesday night’s meeting was preceded by a one hour coaching session with first grade touch judge, and former first grade referee, Steve Chiddy.

Prior to the formal meeting members were advised Association President Jason Walsh’s father had passed away earlier in the day. A minute’s silence was observed by members. Stand-in chairman Phillip Brown noted the thoughts and concern of members, and promised the condolences of everyone at the meeting would be conveyed to Jason and his family.

Greg McCallum guest speaker at General Meeting

The next General Meeting of the association will be held this Tuesday night (July 29 2008) at 6:30pm at the Christian Brothers Club House on Nolans Reserve. Former Manly member and first grade referee Greg McCallum will be guest speaker.

Also, a reminder there will be a coaching session before the meeting at 5:30pm with Manly member and first grade touch judge Steve Chiddy.

Thunderstorms disrupt A Grade footy

Heavy rain, thunder and lightning struck the northern beaches late Sunday afternoon (July 27 2008), playing havoc with A Grade fixtures. The rain was so heavy that many grounds were left flooded.

At Harbord Park, Valleys overcame Forestville in the final seconds to win 8-6, after the Ferrets had led throughout. At St Matthews Farm, Cromer notched up their fourth successive win to move to equal second on the ladder with Valleys. They beat Asquith 36-4. At Warrina Street (Berowra), the home side defeated Narrabeen 43-12. At Lionel Watts, where, in addition to the rainstorm, there were reports of hail and snow, Avalon beat Belrose 34 to 10. (Later a Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said what appeared to be snow was in fact light to soft hail). Narraweena had the bye.

Earlier in the afternoon at Harbord Park Bevan Bourke made his debut in A Grade, handling the Forestville vs. Valley A2 game. A number of members were on hand for the game, won by the home side 40-0, after which players and officials from both sides, joined association members in congratulating Bevan on his performance.

Names of Greg Diews, Paul Harradine added to Honour Board

Manly Referees Association stalwarts Paul Harradine and Greg Diews were honoured for their recent Life Membership awards at a glittering dinner at Cromer Golf Club on Friday night (July 25 2008).

The two were presented with life membership blazers, joining the ranks of just 51 other members that have received this honour in the association's 76-year history.

It was great to see the big roll-up, a tribute to Social Secretary Blake Gilmer, and others who assisted in the organization of the night.

Three A Grade teams in second place after weekend games

Cromer outplayed Valleys 14-4 in the A Grade at St Matthews Farm Sunday (July 13 2008). In a grinding, physical game Cromer took charge early with two tries in the opening fifteen minutes. They led 8-4 at half time, and extended the lead in the second half. In other games Asquith overcame Narrabeen 24-20 at Lake Park, while Forestville edged out Narraweena 22-20 at Beverly Job. At Hitchcock Park competition leaders Berowra ran out winners 28-14 over Avalon. Belrose had the bye.

Sunday’s results leave Cromer, Valleys and Forestville in second place on seventeen points, trailing Berowra with 22. Asquith and Narrabeen are equal fourth with 13 points apiece, and Narraweena and Avalon equal seventh with twelve points. Belrose is at the bottom of the ladder with 7 points.

New South Wales won the opening match 18-10, and Queensland the second game by a record-equalling 30-0.

Shane Charman to Control SG Ball Grand Final

13 May 2008

Veteran Manly Referee, Shane Charman, has been appointed to control the SG Ball Grand Final at St Mary's this Saturday.

At the meeting tonight, Tony Danks from the NSWRL announced to members that Charman had been appointed after his good performances in previous weeks.

Charman, who was appointed to the Harold Matthews line last year, said that he had been given an opportunity to referee this year after turning down being a 'touchy'.

In addressing the members, Charman particularly thanked good mate Jason Walsh for his motivational speeches and pushing him in training.

The members were very delighted to again see another Manly Referee being rewarded after years of hard work.

Diews and Harradine accepted as Life Members

29 February 2008

Greg Diews and Paul Harradine were accepted into the Manly Warringah Referees Life Membership following a vote at Monday Night's Annual General Meeting. At least seventy-five percent of the 28 eligible voting members present at the meeting indicated that both Diews and Harradine were worthy of being Life Members of the Association.

Diews had been nominated by Vice President and Life Member, Phillip Brown, who in speaking for his nomination said that Greg's resume shows that he is a worthy recipient and has contributed greatly to refereeing for over twenty years. Likewise, Harradine's nominator, Life Member and Former Director of Referees, David Jay, said that while much Paul’s contribution has really gone under the radar, until now, Paul has played a significant role in the coaching and development of referees – including current members that are in the NSW, Graded and NRL squads.

Both Diews and Harradine congratulated each other and were very honoured by the result. Nominators Brown and Jay presented them with their Life Member pin.

In other news from the Annual General Meeting, Chris Bignold has been voted into the role of Director of Referees for 2008 after Shane Charman stepped down due to other commitments. Laurence Lawira is the new secretary. Jason Walsh, Phillip Brown and Greg Diews maintain their positions on the Executive. Blake Gillmer is the new Social Secretary and David Lombardo remains as Coaching Director.

Congratulations Chris Bignold - Engaged! And to Rob Peard – a Grandfather!

28 February 2008

The Association sends out a big congratulations to Chris Bignold who announced his engagement to girl-friend Rosalie Wilkie.

Chris popped the question while on an overseas holiday over the summer!

It’s been a big year for Chris. He was voted in as Association Secretary, refereed the A-reserve grade grand final and won the Most Improved Referee award. At the Presentation night last year, Chris thanked Rosalie’s support, but little did we know what was to come…

From the Association, Congratulations mate, and all the best to you and Rosalie.

Also over the summer, the Peard Family welcomed a new addition making Rob a Grand Father!

Congratulations to our ever-young “Immediate Past President” and the Association wishes him, his family and the new young one good health and fortune!
