2008 TRAINING

The last training session of the 2008 season will be a light run at 6:30pm on Thursday August 20 2008 at Denzil Joyce and Reub Hudson Oval. It will be a light session followed by dinner and drinks at the Brookvale Hotel at 7:30pm for those that have attended training regularly.

---

There will be no training on Tuesday night August 19 2008 due to the General Meeting to be held at the Harbord Bowling Club (same time 6:30pm).

The second-last training session of the year was on Tuesday night August 12 2008 at Denzil Joyce and Reub Hudson Oval.

---

There will be no training this Tuesday night (July 29 2008) due to the General Meeting, which will be held at Christian Brothers club rooms on Nolans Reserve (not the Harbord Bowling Club). The meeting will start at 6:30pm, however at 5:30pm NRL First Grade touch judge Steve Chiddy will be along to provide a talk on touch judging skills at the highest level. This will be a great lead-up for the finals series which starts next weekend, and all members are invited to come along.

---

Dave Lombardo returned to his conditioning role on Tuesday night (July 22 2008) with Garry Greco tied up with studies. Another good roll-up. Dave put the squad through a series of drills, and then a selection of his legendary abs exercises before finishing with the traditional game of touch.

---

Tuesday night (July 15 2008) Regular trainer Garry Greco was back to take charge after a week off at Hamilton Island. A scheduled one hour of touch however was replaced with a series of drills because it was thought there was no football available. However 20 minutes from the end of the session a ball was located so a hastily organised game of touch was organized. Nathan's team scored soon after the opening bell, however at this point David Lombardo decided the layout of the field needed re-doing. After switching direction, the longitude and latitude, the new field was settled. Naturally with the change the first try was foregone. Emily's team then went to the front with a couple of quick tries, however at the end of the 20 minutes with the 'next try wins' rule, Nathan's team touched down again. Justice in the end.

---

Tuesday night (July 8 2008) more than twenty active members turned out for training run by guest trainer first grade referee Bernard Sutton, who was ably assisted by Doug Keen of NSWRL Referees Development. The pair put members through a series of drills, honing up skills and fitness.

---

Training was again called off this week (26 June 2007) due to the weather (not that you could tell anymore). So members turned up to the Brookvale Hotel to exercise their minds in some trivia. So in recognition of such strenuous activity here are some questions from tbe night - questions that we actually got right!!!

1. Which country was Shakespeare's Hamlet set?
2. What element is represented by the letter W on the Periodic Table of Elements?
3. At what venue is the upcoming Rugby Union test, between Australia and New Zealand being played?
4. What are the four beaches that the Manly Ferries are named after?
5. Who directed the movie Oceans 13, what is the name of the main character and who plays that role?
6. In snooker, what is the value of the pink ball?

Oh, and for the cynics out there... yes, we did get more than 6 questions right!

And the Jackpot questions this week were:
1. Which country in the Commonwealth, excluding Britain, was NOT a British Colony?
2. In an average winter week (so outside of daylight savings time), how many times does The Spit Bridge go up (range of plus/minus two)
3... I can't remember

The Jackpot this week was $3800, maybe we'll try our luck next week!

---
We had a meeting last week, and it rained out the week before... but we should be right for training this Tuesday (26th June 07).

Just a note for referees... PRESENTATION IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF BEING A REFEREE. THAT INCLUDES TUCKING YOUR SHIRT IN AND HAVING YOUR SOCKS PULLED UP!!! FOR ALL THE SATURDAY REFEREES, NEW ONES IN PARTICULAR, THIS NEEDS TO BE ATTENDED TO!!!

5 June 07

The last three weeks has seen an impressive roll up to training! The revival of the training Singlet has brought much interest and competition to the sessions. After the usual warm ups and jogs, coach, Shane Charman set up a number of drills that physically tested us. This ranged from sprints up the hill on one side of St Mattys, to a grid that involved forward sprints, crabbing and backwards jog.

Sessions concluded with Touch Footy and the challenge for the singlet. Just a notable effort in touch tonight was by Hoges to run around Bigsy last week!

The winners of the Singlet (aka. Moose):

The Inaugural winner of the Moose - Nathan Hogan. For arriving late, then disappearing half way through the session

Shane Charman. For screwing up his own drill and thus confusing members that had been doing it correctly. He also jumped the gun on a sprint, and foced members to do another 20m sprint

Todd Eisenhauer. For his efforts on the weekend, where he was apparently buggered after running two lines.

Blake Gillmer. After an unwelcome surprise of a rules test, Shane announced the lowest mark would get this.

1 May 07

Johnny Mac flew into St Matts farm to remind the Webmaster what he had written in the previous post - that training reports will be entered in every week!

We were blessed to be in the presence of our Premier League train on squad referees, Danielle, Greg and Jayson, who were doing their personal training session at Cromer (as Danielle pointed out, they did not have a ground - so were somewhat stuck with us).

We started our session as per the usual responsible light jog, warm up and stretches, before Shano set up five lots of ten metre marks (yes, Johnny Mac, that would make it 50 metres) for a ladder. Ten up, ten back, twenty up, twenty back etc etc. Do that three times, and you get a 900 metre drill!

If you thought that was tough, watching Dan, Greg and Jayson do sets of 100m, 200m sprints then 40, 60, 80m drills (all timed) made us think that our ladder was alright! You have to admire their dedication to their training!

But anyways, after our drill, we were asked to do sprints within the marked ladder. First, 50m up then 50m back with a minute recovery. Then 40m up then 40m back with a minute recovery. 30m, 20m and then 10. The aim is to get easier as the exercise comes along. Thanks to Blouse, who left early and then started two feet behind the line we were sent to do two more 20m sprints, and similarly Todd Smith jumping the gun forced another 20m sprint.

We had a game of "Football tennis" - kicking between two marked squares. Shano, Johnny Mac and Laurie raced off to a two-nil lead. But Blouse and Todd (plus one life) managed to come from behind to take the victory 3-2.

Greg, Jayson and Danielle joined us for a game of touch. The three of them, with Todd Smith and Blouse took on, Johnny Mac, Laurie, Shano and Blake. Blake went in early, running around the defensive line (which if you count, was meant to outnumber Blake's side) before Jayson capitalised on a hole in the goal line defence. The same move was put on in a Shane-Blake combination. With the time running out, 'next try wins' was called. Johnny Mac lifted the side with the old McMahon's point play (run with elbow embraced high). Blake going in again to score the match winner.

Congratulations to Jayson Elkins - SG Ball Semi final this Saturday and to Shane Charman who will assist him on the line. Also Matt Noyen a Harold Matthews Semi Final line.

Danielle Berry and Greg Kidd in Jim Beam Cup games this weekend.

A reminder that a meeting will take place at the Harbord Bowling Club next Tuesday - 6:30pm.

We're short again this weekend, so all hands on deck.
Please venture down to the Harbord Bowling Club after Sunday's A-grade games!!!

The Webmaster has been a bit slack with the training reports, but not anymore!

Tonight, the core of our group had arrived on time and were kicking the footys around awaiting out trainer (who did eventually come! - Problem 1, solved!)

Just a light warm up on the busy St Matts field, where the under 17s cromer side (coached by Fatty) were training and the under 15s side (coached by Chiddy and Langy) were also training! Light stretches were the order to get us ready for a number of drills!

Shano set up the Speed Endurance drill and we broke off into two teams. Todds (x2), Bevan, Blouse and Blake one team and Shano, Dave Liuzzo, Peardy, Rowdy and Laurie in the other. Two laps of the Speed Endurance with a 1 minute recovery between pushed members physically as they ran through.

Our next drill, an agility test against the clock. The aim, to continually beat your own time! For Rowdy, who had the right idea that if your first time blows out, you'll manage to knock off time every go!

We got to make notable mentions of the faster times... (I'm going off memory), Shano and Dave both managed under the 17 seconds and Blake under 16 seconds in at least one of their three attempts at it. The average sat between 17 and 18 seconds.

With a gentle walk back upfield, we set up a passing drill, before playing a compressed touch footy (teams were still training). Keeping to the same teams as before, team two raced away, scoring a number of tries... their secret, being able to hold onto the ball! Team one did eventually get a few back. Shano cut the game short saying he had a surprise for us. Unfortunately it wasn't the lollypop Peardy was expecting (???) but anyways... it was a velodrome like race where holding onto each other's shirt you race around, dropping off before the last man races the other to the "finish line". Team one did get that back, with Blake only just beating Shano!

Good luck this weekend to those appointed
Junior rep guys in particular, as this is the last round before finals!
All the best

The small number that did arrive at 6:30pm (6 Mar 07) showed how many checked their emails! As Peardy pointed out the message had been sent out twice!

Never the less, we did have about 9 keen trainers this week. We started with a light jog around the field and stretches, followed by 6 shuttle runs of 10m before a one minute recorvery, only to do that two more times. This was then followed up by "light sprints" of 30 metres before more suttle runs but of 10, then 20 then 10 metre with a 30 second recovery of which we had 6 sets (our obsession with 6? Six tackles in a set, of course!).

We then broke up into two sides of 4 and had one acting the referee, in a simulated game looking at the Play the Balls, the Ten and the ruck. Again, another worth while exercise to get the mind on what is happening. Touch footy again was on. With the odd number, rotations saw the team attacking with one man up.

Those that trained: Todd E, Todd S, Laurie, Blake, Hoges, Shane, Peardy, Mr and Mrs Harro and one supervisor: Chris Bignold.

Next week, Back at Cromer for a 6:30pm start!
Appointments are out for trials this week, Good luck all.

---

Well, Training (27 Feb 07) did not attract the same number as last week. Trainers with varying reasons for their non-attendence. Jason Walsh was in charge this week and provided more refereeing drill exercises.

It was the Speed-Endurance drill (and for those playing at home, it can be found on the ARLRA or NSWRLRA websites) that featured prominantly (three laps in fact). Then it was simulated refereeing once we were at the stage of exhaustion - a real concentration test. What we were looking for were 10m, hands in the ruck, strips and correct play the balls. It was a great bit of coaching, where we'd discuss what we were looking at and what the decision would be.

Our conclusion was a youngens V not so youngen touch footy match. A bit of brilliance saw Peardy run around the youngens (and I speak for all those he ran around when I say it won't happen again).

Present and accounted for this week were: Addie, Peardy, Johnny Mac, Walshy, Blake, Bevan, Laurie and Firey.

An email will go around outlining the details of next week's training! A note will also appear here when we find out!

---

The new season was dawning upon us, so we thought we should actually start get back into training. And for those that followed us closely at Nolans reserve would have realised that we moved to the hills (Thanks Todd Smith) at St Matties Farm, Cromer. For most it meant an extra 10 minutes drive up but for the one that organised the transfer it meant he could roll out of bed - suffice to say he did ask for a lift there!

We had a good turn out of trainers for our opening session. Shane, leading the troops started with the warm ups and stretches. Our first drill was a shuttle run, of 20metres up and back before a 40 metre sprint on the 6th. If that didn't get the heart going again the tag team effort of sprints sure did. Our casual game of touch concluded the session.

Present and accounted for were: Rob Peard (Supervisor), Harro (assistant supervisor), Addie (?), Walshy, and those that trained: Johnny Mac, Mark Weekes, Blake, Bigsy, Hoges, Firey, Laurie and Shano.

Next week, Tuesday 27th February 2007, training will again be at ST MATTHEW'S FARM, CROMER. And will be at 7:15pm for about 45 minutes.

Season 2006 concluded with the Grandfinals played on Sunday 3rd September. Enjoy the summer break. Feel free to train at Nolans 13 if you wish... But we sharn't be there!

With the Christmas and New Year Festivities already passed, the summer is filled with preseason training all in preparation for the upcoming 2007 season!!!

Have a good summer - enjoy the weather and especially to the young fit athletes good luck with your off-season training (especially Junior rep guys!)

---

Me thinks referees should not train... What was the excuse this week? No lighting. On arrival at Nolans 13, the lights at one end of the field did not have power running through them - aka they weren't on leaving the field quite dark. We decided to venture straight to Brookie Hotel and have a feed.

That's a sesh that we all like to have!
Thanks to Mr President for putting on the feed for us.
Good luck with games this weekend - one week of semis then the grandfinal!

---

Message from the President:

Next Tuesday, 22 August, will be the final training session for the season, as we have our traditional pre Grand Final Monthly Meeting on 29th August. All should meet at Nolans 13 at 6.30pm for a light session, followed by a meal and a few (soft) drinks at Brookvale Hotel from around 7.30pm.

---

WE'RE BACK IN TRAINING... (and counting down to our last sesh)

15th August 2006 saw trainers back on Nolans running around and going about our usual business. It has been a while since we did have a run, as someone obviously made a request to designate Tuesday as wet weather day! Actually, despite an early downpour of rain and hail, grounds remained in good nik for us to use.

We began with the usual warm ups and stretches, and some drills of marking/holding the ten, up and backs etc etc. We managed to get to 36 passes and handoffs, but that was WELL short of our target of 100 (and Firey did the quick maths for the webmaster to confirm it wasn't even half of the required target); when Peardy kept count our drill did eventually stop at 112 - a fine effort!

Oh - and we also played Captain ball and Tunnel Ball! The professor of physics, David Lombardo, was overheard telling his team (in Tunnel Ball) that the best way to roll a footy was to put it longways across the ground and NOT to roll it over the tips. It was unfortunate for Dave that Johnny Mac and Laurie overheard the tactics and decided it to steal their plans. To the detriment of his, well pride, Dave's plan did not go ahead to fruition losing the best of three contest!

We established tonight was no time for mucking around when it came to touch. We couldn't afford injuries or any accidents - not looking at anyone in particular, Dave Lombardo made note no elbows, ankle taps or any cheap shots would be tolerated tonight! (To the surprise of members, Harro turned up bearing gifts - some were confused of Harro's presence, as we hadn't stipulated we'd be going to the pub for a feed!)

Team red - Johnny Mac, Greg Kidd, Elko and Firey; took on Team miscellaneous - Gary Grecco, Dave Lombardo, Maccas and Laurie. An even contest all round, no controversial decisions (well, not many) a few 'forward' passes let go, a try scored after time-master Peard called end of the first half and a questionable offside that was pulled up. But nothing in the game compared to the "tricky ball" that Elko delivered numerous times - but no one in his side could grasp!

The game went into extra time (to the absolute joys of Greg Kidd and Todd Smith - it needs to be added that Todd ran two Sunday lines that went into extra time on the weekend, the second being controlled by Greg Kidd whose game went for a total of 108 minutes). The game won eventually by the multicoloured team.

Well done fellas, next week is the last training session! An email detailing what is to happen should be sent out as planned. All the best this weekend, another big weekend of Major/Minor semi's. To everyone running around good luck and especially to those looking to progress through the final series.

---

Message from Rob:

As a number of people are away, some are attending judiciary and some are running in the Development games, to keep people fresh and keen coming into the semi finals, training has been called off FOR TONIGHT ONLY (1st August 06)

---

Training will not be on this Tuesday (25th July) A meeting at the Bowling Club will take place.

---

Tuesday 18th July saw a downpour of rain early in the day. The councils made a decision to close grounds, thus training was not on. Our President and Trainer were there to guide the slow turn up of members towards the direction of their homes - to rest up for a VERY BIG weekend!

---

The webmaster was out of action from training this week, but that didn't stop the other fellas getting in and having a good run around. In fact we probably had our highest number for the year, and it must have been a blue moon to have Chris Bignold turn up for his 2nd training session this year? (will confirm).

As the webmaster rocked up late after his physio appointment, he was expecting all to be fully into the mix of events... however to his shock (well, not really shock if you read Strange But True) but to his amazement the Eisenhauers were pulling up at the same time, and not to mention everyone else was still exercising their vocal chords.

The conversation led to a very notable point on concentration - particularly leading into the finals series. An example was examined where a player was penalised for swearing late in a match. It was quite debatable to what the referee's mindset should be - to know whether the scores are close or not and to know the time in the match - I guess, it's up to individual preference!

Elko brought up a ruling question about a player entering the field (of play) despite the instruction of a Touch Judge not to do so (a fourteenth player). To where the penalty is awarded after the TJ has made their report. Many situations examined where breaks in play occur, or if tries are scored. Something that may need to be looked up, but the greater advantage seemed to sit well with most of us. Dave Lombardo was quick to point out that whenever Elko graces us with his presence, we find ourselves talking more and moving less - and as Elko pointed out, he doesn't need the training!

Dave ran the concentration drill like last week (see below) and again ran quite successfully when minds were on the job! And our warm up to touch footy was the usual square passing grid. Thanks to Todd 'Firey' Smith, the fellas had to aim for 100 passes! We managed to get there after 3 goes and a speech from our fired up trainer!!!

We got through the touch footy without major controversies (note it says "major" - there's always some desputed calls when there's 8-10 referees running around). Some notable plays (we really can't go past this one) where Peardy changed his line and ran away from Bigsy, running away with a great 50 metre effort; then again, Peardy's "no" try moments later when Blouse (was it Blouse?) that called touch; (and as requested by Todd) his conversion (yes Todd, I put it in - are you happy now? - as you said mate, after 100 attempts, you've got one over - and for clarification, it was an important kick).

Present and active: Peardy, Bigsy, Elko, Bev, Firey, Blouse, Maccas, Gary and our trainer Dave
Present but "co-ordinating": Rocky and Laurie

All the best to those appointed to the rep matches.
And a reminder from Mr President to wear the new off field gear to the game at Brookvale - must be presentable!
Good luck to everyone else on the weekend.

Oh, and another message - There is a set of Flags that were left at Lake Park a couple weeks ago, picked up by Danielle... They are currently in the possession of Todd Smith, if you are missing a set and if these could be yours please contact him.

---

We were back training at Nolans on Tuesday 4th July and despite an earlier downfall of rain we managed to get a run (probably to the dislike of some members). When our trainer did manage to arrive (note the majority of members were there on time) we commenced the usual way - a chat, warm-ups, stretches and the like.

We were made to work hard this session with drills geared towards concentration and positioning. This was beneficial as two culprits were identified from two weekends ago regarding their positioning around the field.

The first drill was a basic up ten, back ten with one being the referee and controlling the line while watching a cone. Going at a reasonable pace saw some drop out quite early on.

The next grid was developed through the activity and it proved to not only to be a challenge but very worth while. Three people would be involved, where two would run back and forth on perpendicular sides of a square. The third would be the referee inside the square, constantly maintaining the co ordinates as the two outside changed movements. The referee would face one side, while keeping the second in his peripheral vision. The runner in the peripheral vision would stop occasionally and control the tackle count. The fifth tackle saw a light jog to change the referee's vision. Sounds easy? Try it and see how well you maintain your concentration and positioning!

After the concentration drills, you'd guess that we'd be able to manage enough strength to catch and pass footys... that didn't happen. A warm up passing and catching grid failed miserably. It was only when Dave ordered us to go for a run that the gears finally kicked in.

Our game of touch, for once was controversially immune.

Captains Mac and Peard divided the 9 persons group "evenly", Johnny Mac claiming the extra man.

When the game was deadlocked at nil-all for ages Maccas on Johnny's side put in a field goal to make it one-nil. Peardy's side remained optimistic, and when maccas was sin binned a try resulted for their side. And just before half time they slotted a field goal to be up by six. At one point of the match, Blouse had been sin binned leaving Peardy's side with three men. They managed to hold off the other side who were attacking the try line with a two/three man overlap! Amazing work fellas.

Peardy's side had a good roll on with the ball and again broke through to score another converted try: 13-1 with not much time remaining.

When Bevan (Johnny Mac's side) put in a chip and chase play, it looked like he had scored... but mate, grounding the ball over the other field's dead ball line doesn't count. And the game kept going. Bevan did manage to steal one back scoring in the corner and Maccas converting the make the difference 6 points.

Another try was scored out wide to Johnny's side and Todd Smith had the "luxury" of the conversion attempt. The attempt was waved away, and made for a very close finish. One set each side, six tackles...

Peardy's side with the ball managed to get a kick away inside the opposing ten. Unfortunately the acuteness in the angle of the kick made it find touch without any pressure of defenders coming through. Johnny Mac's side, running into the dark end of the field managed to get to the opposing 30 when maccas put a kick through on the fourth tackle. And as rules state, he needed to regather possession! A scrambling effort by Dave Lombardo saw that didn't happen and Peardy's side finished two point victors.

An excellent training session, epitomised by a great competitive game of touch - and for the record, there was probably no more than 7 or 8 drop balls total, a great effort considering the conditions, dew/cold, and the fact we're referees!

The victors: Peardy (c), Dave Lombardo, Blouse and Laurie
The not so victors: Johnny Mac (c), Gary Grecco, Firey, Maccas and Bevan (please note which side had more players!)

Enjoy the shortened weekend, only Sunday this week... Good luck all.
Nolans next Tuesday for training!

---

Training on Tuesday 27th June 2006 shall not be on. A general meeting shall take place at the Harbord Bowling Club.

---

All trainers, a message from Dave Jay about training:

Training will be cancelled tomorrow night (20th June) as it appears most will be at judiciary!!

Also, for those that are yet to pick up their new gear allocation, please make arrangements with Dave Lombardo.

---

We hit the training paddock again this week (13 June) and after a weekend off, we were still our sharp selves (while players and coaches roll their eyes at that comment, I'll carry on). We started with our usual drills of up 20, back 10. We were testing our "peripheral" as Dave instructed us to (we think Dave meant of the 'vision' variety), but I think Blouse's shooting up out of the line (because he was continually one play behind) confused many of us out wide. We were warming ourselves to acceleration with our drills tonight, and when we managed 50 passes across a grid, and 50 pass/hand offs our concentration and ball co-ordination was set to our usual controversial game of touch footy.

Captains Peard and Davis distributed age, talent, speed, fitness and experience unequally, but more importantly with a one G Kidd and D Lombardo not on the same side it was what looked to be 5 weeks ago all over again!

Play went back and forth, with Gary Grecco opening the account for Rocky's side, scoring off an intercept. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Dave Lombardo later put it on the toe and dribbled it into the in goal touching down and converting putting Peardy's side in the lead. When Greg heading down the dark end of the field caught the ball after rebounding off the goal post, a controversial try was claimed and awarded, even though two defenders over the incident claimed otherwise. But as stated 3 weeks ago, we don't have a video ref (even though Peardy called for one after Dave's first try ???). The score 10-6. Two more tries to Rocky's side was putting Peardy's side under pressure. With the score 20-6, then 20-12 the game was still not over with Todd Smith and Dave Lombardo opening the defence up a number of times.

A ruling was thrown up, when Dave throwing a pass to find Laurie was touched in flight and then Maccas running behind the play happened to catch the ball. Offside? Most thought so! But anyways, Todd found one man short in the corner and put Laurie in for a try, but was not converted. Being only 4 behind Dave had a sniff of victory, but solid defence and the clock were obstacles. In the last play for their side, Greg Kidd kicked through and with his excellent pace regathered and touched down for a well constructed try.

Present at training tonight was: Rocky, and his team of: Greg Kidd, Gary Grecco, Todd Eisenhauer and Johnny Mac. And Peardy's team: Dave Lombardo, Blouse, Laurie and Todd Smith.

Good luck this weekend, it looks like we'll be sweet for games. And to the Junior reps, good luck with your appointments! A note from Mr Preso, Appointments should be out tomorrow or Thursday.

REMINISCENT TO LAST YEAR, "Tab 2" THE POPULAR DRILL

Wet weather hit Sydney with significant force, causing the ever-keen trainers to hit the "watering hole" a tad early.

The session made its way to the Brookie Hotel where Peardy ran through a couple of ruling situations (most coming from the ARLRA website). Some divided opinion, particularly regarding the advantage rule and in-goal area.

***The following scenario in particular: A blue player knocks on 5m from the attacking goal line. The Ball rolls into the in goal, where a red picks the ball up, and still in the in-goal kicks. The ball travels 30m forward and lands out on the full. What is your ruling?

The healthy discussion led to a 'healthy meal'.

Present was: Peardy, Dave Naughton, Mr and Mrs Harro, our Trainer Dave Lombardo, Johnny Mac, Gary Grecco, Danielle (who has been appointed to an NRL game as Interchange official), Bevan, Blouse, the two Todds, Scott Chidley, Laurie Lawira and Greg Kidd.

It was a good incentive to be at "training". All enjoyed the session put on courtesy of our President, and in particular were very psyched about "Tab 2".

Good luck if weather holds off, and to the Junior Rep guys: Elko, another Friday Night Flegg Centre and to Danielle, Flegg line followed by the Happy Cards for NRL on Sunday!

WET WEATHER DETAILS (6 June 06)

All trainers, a message from David Jay:

Given the nature of the grounds today, training will be held at the Brookvale Hotel commencing at 6.30pm. Rob Peard will be conducting a brief laws session.

Members will then enjoy a meal together afterwards, as originally planned.

---

TRAINING SPECIAL!

Next Tuesday, training will commence at the regular time of 6:31pm at Nolans reserve. At its conclusion - probably after our usual controversial game of touch football (we'll come up with some controversy if there isn't one - according to some players, we're good at that!) We will head to the Brookie Hotel for a bit of a feed! Ensure you're all prepared for training, or eating... preferably both. This is an incentive to get to training and catch up on a small social event!

---

WET WEATHER SPOILS EVENING

Unusual weather hit Sydney on Tuesday causing the scheduled training session to be cancelled. Arrived and ready to train was the ever-keen Rob Peard, Dave Lombardo, Greg Kidd, Bevan Bourke, Laurie Lawira, Todd Smith, Todd Eisenhauer. Mr Peard did announce to the group that it was not his idea to call training off, as he was ready to put a big effort in tonight!

Dave and Rob did put up two general rulings...
1(a) A ball is kicked in general play in an attacking position 15m from the goal line. The ball travels past the dead ball line and out on the full. How is play recommenced?
1(b) Take the same situation as above but instead of 15m out, the play is about the half way line. How is play recommenced? (and for arguments sake, it was a very very windy day)
2. A ball is stripped when there is two involved in the tackle. Should the advantage rule apply?

Next week will be a meeting at the Harbord Bowling Club!

---

The best training session we've had all year!

The driving spirit's back at ref's training, with a hard session that will pay off in the upcoming weekend! We began with our usual light job and 'discipline' stretches led by Ms Berry. (It was clear that Ms Berry was not going to put up with any misbehaviour as Dave Lombardo found out - ordered to see her for a Lunch time detention). Up and backs got the activities rolling with a roll ball drill to follow. There were a number of sprint competitions developing with the fellas, me thinks the more "experienced" used maths (i.e. worked out which tackles to take the ball up) to avoid doing any sprints!

A running-passing drill tested the concentration, with the team making it to the required 25 passes, twice on both left and right sides!

We were all in the mood for touch! An early fumble by Danielle was found out by her giggling (as Dave identified), it did not prove costly to her team (the yellow bibs). It was positive team work that was the key to success tonight! An early run away try to Laurie opened the scoring for the yellow bibs, and all got to see his great hook when he attempted a conversion... unfortunately, the kick was in front and the hook caused the ball to not just miss but to miss by a lot!

The coloured shirts were found attacking the opposition line, with an overlap on the street side of the field, the delivery by Elko found a mark. Unfortunately it wasn't the mark, and Dave L was seen running down the sideline and touched down for 4 points (and converted) to the Yellow bibs.

With plays back and forward, the intensity was high from both sides. When Laurie selflessly found Danielle after a break, it looked like a great team try... but Bevan managed to run Dan down and in a comedy of errors, Laurie fumbled and the colours found themselves attacking in broken play. A miss by Todd Smith made Peardy look brilliant with the ball as he scooted through the centre of the ruck to score.

Tries here and there, many off supurb kicks, notably the Elkins-Peard combination which was not referred to the Video referee, as we "don't have one" (as Dave clearly identified). One kick has to be mentioned: with a 5th play attack, running towards the dark end of Nolans, Elko put in the grubber and deja vu to an incident last year bodies went tumbling, this time, that of Bevan Bourke! Peardy clearly over the situation claimed interference for his team... but the culpret... was the kicker (and if players are reading this, at least one of us refs did see it - despite your shock-horror)!

One thing that needs to be learnt after the game this week... don't attempt set plays! The Yellow Bibs planning a brilliant attack that was meant to see a try scored... saw everything but that! The ball went from end to end of the field, went "forwards", backwards, left, right and eventually hit the ground... probably where it belonged! Never the less, it did bring a grin to the Dave Lombardo, who had instigated the plan!

It was a great night of activities. Thanks again to Dave for his work tonight and also to the effort of the attendees Peardy, Elko, Danielle, Bevan, Laurie, the two Todds! Good luck this weekend, especially to Elko, a Flegg centre (Saturday) and Danielle on his line!

CONTROVERSY INSPIRES ELKO and GREG to VICTORY (9 May 06)

The kick through five out from the attacking line rebounded off the shins of Bevan Bourke to be scooped up by Greg Kidd only to be called back by Dave Lombardo for a last play turnover. Whether Bourke did play at the ball will never be decided until it reaches the war crimes tribunal in the Hague. The score was 18-16 at that stage, (Todd Smith had missed a crucial attempt at goal that would have levelled the game). After a domestic, that the best in the business would have called sissy, Dave controversially played the ball and carried on as if nothing had happened (a good lesson for all you players reading this).

Greg Kidd stole the game three sets later when he turned defence into attack scooping a long range kick from Lombardo.

Earlier in the game, tries went back and forward, many of which involved long range attacks. Peardy had called a knock on in goal in one of Greg's tries, only to be dismissed by two of his fellow "team mates"

Lombardo later said we should all learn that "cheaters never prosper" only to realise his team did not win.

Tonight was a better turn up of trainers. Our high for the year. Present was Rocky, Peardy, Greg, Elko, Firey, Maccas, Sticks, Laurie, Dan (who was congratulated for being appointed a Harold Matts line) and our trainer Dave.

We were treated to a light jog, Dave's fantastically prepared stretches, crunchies and team sit ups, and some passing drills. A really good session Dave, got us all working and in the mindset for the weekend!

Not a good show up at training this week, making it a very easy decision to can it and head off home. Present this week was Elko, Greg, Dan, Todd E, Laurie and our trainer Dave. Elko and Laurie pulled the pin early and left the remainder to their own devices (trying to kick a field goal between mini field posts from the "acutest" possible angle).

Training involved intensity and courage tonight (11th April). The intense conversation lasting 20 mins about last weekend's footy games and the courage to call it quits by ten to seven. The shy number of four mutually agreed that personal training was on the agenda this week. Present was Rob Peard, Dave Lombardo, Todd Smith and Laurie Lawira. The junior rep guys sent their apologies as they had a joint session with the NRL.

Have a great Easter and good luck to those running around this weekend in reps.

Please note, next Tuesday will be a meeting! (Moved forward from Anzac day)
There will also be no training April 25th. Enjoy the three weeks break from training.

Our latest training session was cut short due to our conditioner required down at judiciary. We did manage a talk about the requirements this year regarding the new terminology (Dominant, Surrender and Movement) which shall be a feature in all international rules games this year. David Jay did clarify for the record that 'move' is synonymous with 'movement' (a question was raised over the weekend about this) and it is to be used as an instruction to players to roll away. The model for touch-judging was also talked about, where the open side touchie will now assist the referee in the ten, while the close side will be over the ruck and looking for forward passes. Sideline officials will not be required to run back and forth after marking the ten as they are required in Junior Reps. This will slowly be developed over the year.
Our session concluded with a game of touch, where Peard, Berry, Kidd and Lawira blitzed the team of Elkins, Smith, Eisenhauer and Davis.

Week two in Manly this weekend, good luck to all involved.
And the Junior Rep guys in various locations around NSW, good luck on Saturday

Our last training session (21st March) at Curly Beach was led by the Junior Rep guys, Greg and Elko. A mix of fitness and games was the order of the evening. Again some brilliant catches shown off and deja vu to last week, Johnny Mac's sharp reflexes were a feature. A light jog up the beach, with some sit ups summed up our fitness activities. We were pleasantly surprised when Blouse rolled up to take the number of trainers to a record high this year!

Our game of continuous cricket was cut short due to bad lighting as called by the Umpire(s?), even though Blouse did claim he was 5 n.o when the game was called off. And in touch footy, amidst the confusion of what "roll ball" rules were, when we weren't playing the ball, was all forgotten when the team of Kidd, Smith, Peard and Blouse won three-nil (though some did question the referee when he kept referring to the team as "ferrets")

Thanks to the Junior rep guys, Elko and Greg for leading training, and to Dan, our stretch guru. Other members present at training was Johnny 'reflexes' Mac, Peardy, Rocky, Laurie, Firey and a rejuvinated Blouse!

President Peard reminded all that this was our last training sesh and next week there will be NO training, rather a meeting at the Harbord Bowling Club (6:30 pm)!

Goodluck to the Junior reps guys this weekend, and to those involved in the V8s on Saturday!

Training on Tuesday (14th March) was a games session to build up the team morale. We began with a light warm up game of catch, with many spectacular catches being shown off by all members, a notable one was Johnny Mac with quick reflexes to pick up a delivery coming to him at pace. The warm up led to an intense catching game of beach tennis/volley-ball, where the team of Elkins, McEvoy, Berry and Lawira defeated Lombardo, Kidd and Smith (it should be noted that even though they were one player short, in the rematch they were given an extra life). Continuous cricket was up next where the bowling attack was dismantled, much like Australia and South Africa (on Monday). Batters using a tennis racquet smashed the tennis ball in all directions, with the last ball of the day being belted into the back of a ute by Elko. The game of touch footy concluded the session. Though the multi-coloured shirts team of Johnny Mac, Greg Kidd, Dave Lombardo and Danielle Berry were ahead, Dave's call of "next try wins" brought their downfall, with a brilliant play by Matt and Jayson saw a try go to the red-shirts team.

'Twas a great session where everyone got a lot of fitness out of running around on the soft sand! Present at training: Johnny Mac, Dave Lombardo, Greg Kidd, Jayson Elkins, Danielle Berry, Laurie Lawira, Todd Smith, and just in time for touch was Matt Noyen.

A reminder to active referees that the Valley 8's tournament is SATURDAY 25th March 06
